Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

  1. Amazing – Our top two performers over the last two years – Griff & Craig, are now being cast to the wind, by some on here.

    Imagine if Brendan dropped CG and DDV makes a bad mistake – he would get slaughtered.

    DDV will get his chance – but he will have to wait.

  2. I’m astounded of forehead.

    How can we contemplate fielding Dorus Wednesday.

    No one has even seen him train.

    Had he been a contender, we would have seen him in Limerick.

    Fasan had a full game and saved a few shots.

    He did look a wee bit dopey at times.

    More like a hockey goal tender than a goal keeper.

    Craig will play Wednesday.

    Of that I am sure.

  3. GG,

    I am equally astounded DDV will be backup for CG. Not a replacement.

    Anyone who thinks BR will throw in a new keeper and drop our best goalscorer for the home leg of our playoff against Beer Shiva knows feckall and has been at the cooking sherry.

    Talk about fickle.

  4. Big Jock used to take the team down to Seamill before a big game.

    It fostered team spirit, focused the side on the task ahead, avoided any distractions and underlined the match’s importance.

    Brendan should take a wee leaf out of Jock’s book.

    Just keep Leigh away from any rowing boats laying around.

  5. Well Bhoys, we move into a pivotal week.

    Victory and qualification over the Israelis gets us to the promised land.

    We could also say that Brendan would be performing above expectation.

    Interesting signing of De Vries.

    Hopefully Craig will realise that top performances needed to stay in the team.

    I like Craig Gordon, he’s definitely no1 for me.

    Much to be optimistic about.

    Onwards and upwards

    Only three sleeps till the Hoops blast us into Europe, where we belong.

    This is a golden opportunity the club can’t let go. It is interesting that the media never mention what the financial benefit will be to Celtic. Given how prize money is now distributed it will be worth £25-30M to the club. They are worried all right.

    Morning Bhoys a big week for the hoops and a headache for Brendan so many players wanting to play who will he play at Centre Back ? what will our midfield be ? will he play two up front ? these are good problems to have.Competition for places can only improve the team will Brendan lead us to the Champions League group stages at his first attempt ? H.H.

    I watched the whole of the hun game yesterday.

    Forrester , who was taken off before he risked being sent off , is the archetypal hun.

    He `ll need sorting.

    Hail Hail fella, hope yer well.

    Yeah, it’s what I look for in a Celtic team 1st of all…..

    …who’s gonny be doing all the battling, ball-winning and, just putting in an industrial shift in the middle of the park ?

    I think that Cellic need 2 tigers in the middlle of the pitch.

    At the minute….we don’t have any…imho.

    Calum Paterson could be a golden nugget ?

    Broony…..?…..Nah, not for me.

    Tough guy’s don’t lean with they’re chins.

    Cute-tough-guys don’t have 3 attempts to pull down Neymar from the back, knowing that, as soon as ye look at Neymar, he’ll fall onto the pitch and get ye sent off.

    Cute-tough-guys don’t put they’re own ‘little’ needley-fueds ahead of the interests of the Celtic team.

    Is Brendan onto Broony ?

    Or, has Brendan been duped by Broony ?….ala – Peter Grant with…..

    David Hay ?

    Billy McNeill ?

    Liam Brady ?

    Lou Macari ?

    Tommy Burns(RIP) ?

    Who all got sacked ?

    Wim got rid of PG and – won 2 trophy’s !!!!!

    Cute-tough-guys don’t utter – “Aberdeen will be our nearest challengers.”

    Cute-tough-guys utter – “We’ll be doing the best that we can to, meet ‘all’ of our challengers head-on.”

    Broony reminds me of the old saying – “If ye go looking for trouble – ye’ll git it.”

    The huns are p#sh!

    The huns will be driven by mibbery, which could be dangerous as, for us…it looks like Brendan’s been told to pursue the PLC-narrative of, looking the other way…..early days but, my 1st impressions….are that, Brendan’s Celtic team on the pitch, might not be paranoid enough ?…..we’ll see.

    Why is John Kennedy still in the dug out ?

    Has Lawwell ‘planted’ JK into Brendan’s dressing room as a ‘spy’ ie: like Fergus and, Jock Brown did when they ‘planted’ Eric Black to spy on, Wim and Murdo ?

    As I said, maybe there ain’t enough paranoia at Celtic Park ?

    That laxity comes from the ‘top’ of the club.

    Interesting times ahead……hmmmm….?????

    Take Care Tims – YNWA.

    ….off-oot-zzzzz…..

  10. And the Eric black thing – murdo was running to his smsm buddies throughout. Right or wrong where jock brown was concerned, but you’re wrong about black. Football guy through and through, highly regarded at the time. By many people in the game north and south of the border. That’s why Celtic employed him.

  11. BMCW – from last night – same first game eh! What are the odds on that? Maybe SFTB will pop on and tell us :-)

    You are off on one again, which is good.

    Callum Paterson is one that I think would do us a turn at right back Two years ago he looked like a pudden but has impressed ever since.

    Don’t think it’s our priority just now though.

    You all can squak all you like. Griffiths has been identified as not being sufficient in quality.

    ______________________

    Brendan Rodgers on Leigh Griffiths:

    “I always think that to be a winner, and to be the best, you need to be on the limit. The best players do.

    “Leigh plays on the limit, as a number of our boys do. That’s what you want as a coach and a manager.

    “If he had a different name – a more Latino name – this guy would be talked about as being worth 15 million quid, for sure. Luis Suarez played on edge and he was alright.”

    Nuff said.

  14. Seamill Hydro would be a great shout for pre match for the Bhoys. I love going there and the Mrs gets fed up with me walking about going.” This is where the Bhoys paddled” ” this is where they played 5 a side” ” this where they had the pre match stroll “….walking in the footsteps of legends is grand.

  15. Time for the gym, it’s very dull again here. So I defiance of the weather I will probably be having a sunshine inspired tapas lunch again.

    The good guys at Lidl have some great Spanish offers on at the moment, so that’s first stop after the gym.

    When Celtic are well , then so am I.

    Thanks for asking.

    I take your point about Broony butI find it difficult to make the utterance simply because he has battled long and hard for us. I love his refusal to roll over .

    Nevertheless , he sometimes makes bad choices on the field which handicap the club.Against Hearts for example I find myself thinking ” go easy, son “. Don`t give the ref. the opportunity he`s desperate to find.

    On the other hand , the opposition know that he is the man to target for a spot of retaliation.

    Having said that, he controlled himself well in the little stoush he had with Tony Watt.

    Agreed , though.

    He`s not the guy to sort out the likes of Forrester.

    Betcha Brendan will sort it.

  18. Brendan Rodgers really rates Big Doris:

    ‘I’ve been really disappointed twice in my career at losing players — one was Suarez at Liverpool and the first one was Dorus when leaving Swansea. He was such a key part of how I worked there. Dorus was outstanding, he understands the game. His game is perfectly suited to how I want to work. He’s here to push Craig.

    ‘He’s a really fit guy, he’s 35 but look at guys like (Edwin) Van der Sar who played right through till 40 and had some of his best years in that final part of their career. Dorus has been nursing a slight knock, so we’re just assessing that. He’s with the medical team and I expect him to join the goalkeepers tomorrow. He can distribute, pass the ball and Dorus is as good as I’ve seen in all my travels.’

  19. That was a fun read back with some insightful stuff through the night. So funny I was struggling to keep reading through the tears of laughter. Pure dead brilliance on LG.

    Then KevJ just struts in and rules the roost and has me on the floor.

    KevJ. Even I’m not that para about PL.

    Absolutely brilliant comedy guys.

    MWD

  20. So Brendan Rodgers wants a keeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet and can distribute it with a view to setting things going rather than just a hopeful launch up the park.

    Quite right.

    Though it WIIL lead to scary moments and one or two lost goals which will have the managers in the crowd shouting “Just clear your lines FFS”.

    FFS Neg, Thomson bottles sending off a Hun & suddenly it’s the Celtic’s Board’s fault and by extension the fault of our general support.

    That is pure nonsense of the highest degree. Celtic play in Glasgow, Glasgow is in Scotland, we either go out of existence or play in the SPFL.

    So far this year all at Celtic seem to be pulling in the one direction and we appear to be making decent progress. I know that doesn’t suit your agenda, therefore you will grasp any straw you can but really you can do better than that.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I so much wanted to comment on this yesterday but as a wheen a’ drink had been taken,I thought I’d wait.
    I’m not sure that this is much better than the scrambled thoughts I had yesterday,but here goes.
    I hate it when I get presented with diametrically opposed opinions. And agree with both.
    NEGANON is and always has been an extremity of how most Celtic fans of my acquaintance think. He focuses on our treatment by “The Establishment ” and doesn’t let it go.
    Is he right to labour and rail in the face of the hatred he describes? Of course he is. We wouldn’t put up with it in the workplace.
    Or the pub.
    Yet we meekly accept it in the biggest love of our lives,outside family and friends.
    CORKCELT is also correct. We are where we are. Much as we might like to be somewhere else,somewhere that rewarded our massive undying love with money,we are a Scottish club.
    We have to be self-sufficient.
    But we should always always be in the front foot.
    I’m sorry that I can’t recall who posted this yesterday,at least I tabbed it. It explains,for me,why NEGANON is right. And why CORKCELT is too.
    Particularly the bit about the bungalow. That would piss me off anaw.
