Dateline 66-67: Celts open League Cup defence at Tynecastle

1034

The Football Specials will be packed today with optimistic Celtic fans ahead of their opening competitive game of season 1966-67 at Tynecastle.  The Glasgow club hope to win the League Cup for the fourth time in their history. They face a Hearts team looking to win the League Cup for the firth time, which last season became increasingly dependent on lightning-fast striker, Willie Wallace.

By comparison, the reigning Division One and League Cup champions have two of the best wingers in the country. Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone were the only Celtic players to score in their final eight competitive games of last season, as Jock Stein’s team’s fitness proved crucial with a barrage of late goals.

St Mirren visit Clyde in the other Group 4 game, the only group with all Division One teams, but it’s the two giants who meet in Edinburgh who are favourites to produce the group winner.

    I`m great , mate.

On a high right now with the arrival of Brendan which I was fortunate enough to share with you as it was happening.

    Modest ambition for this season.

    Group stages and the league.

As has been said , the Be`er games are the biggest of the season. The finance would provide the flexibility to introduce , should Brendan think it is necessary , some more strength to the squad.

Although I like some of those currently out of the loop.

    Dan,

He should have been sent off for the first one.

    Booked next.

Sine died for the third. Watch the speed, the studs. No intent on anything but hurting badly his target.

Take the Darren O’Dea attitude, wee Harry gets kicked more than he kicks, I am sure Darren’s tongue is still entrenched in Darren’s cheek……..

Fcuk them……they are mince….. Happoel are our oppenents, if we get by them, I hope we fight and scrape for 3rd ala,Benfica

  4. Re Forrester, 1st and 3rd should probably have been straight reds. 2nd was definitely a booking.

Brendan might be a great manager, players might believe I him, but it’s classic playground stuff, bring in players your trust Toure, Sinclair Doris, while also getting the playground bullies onside, meeting Broony first off………by the way I am a massive Broony fan and every manager loves him, over this side of the water some have been moaning about Brendan playing up to Sky or BT, in my daft opinion this is Brendan working the media, they want an few words, Brendan is filling their show, by the way the “flies” must hate our loveable manager strutting his stuff …… Nobody likes the press or media but in this day and age we all play our part……. (Sometimes give them their stories)

Brendan doing interviews with Sky is a double bonus – for as long as he’s on the telly talking sense, it also means there not a hun arsehole talking nonsense. What’s not to like?

Forrester’s green light to kick rings round him has already shown what’s gonnae happen this season.

Two games into the season,or one for us,shows us what is in store.

Wednesday is a monumental game for us ,but I am confident we will prevail.

Would love to see a right good midfielder in the team though, as that is the area that still concerns me.

  12. Tricoloured Ribbon on

    Boaby,

A dirty, wee, kid on hard ticket who will have to be cemented early on.

If we don’t sign a midfielder shortly I would play Henderson against him.He will empty him early on.In a clean sense of course..

I remember him standing almost next to me at a game against them at Celtic Park. I was in the last column of seats before the demilitarised zone and the uglies were within smelling distance. He was making gestures about the number of goals they’d win by. Outcome? Well, let’s just say his maths is a good as his English….

I could listen to Brendan all day and all night, I don’t think it’s accidental he is now part of the punditry, Brendan is a catch for Scotland and the TV companies want to cash in, so again well done Dermott, Peter Lawell & the Celtic board …….give the abuse ???? acknowledge the plaudits, unless some fans want to be Sevconians or just hunlike, or just sometimes unhappy Celtic fans !

Kev J, hope all is well and you are on the Brendan bus, front, middle or back just enjoy the ride

Brendan for me is an instant improvement.

Mind you , that wouldn`t have been difficult.

Hard to be specific , but at it`s most basic , he`s a Celtic fan.

    Now that`s a hell of a start .

Add to that, the almost universal agreement that a significant number of players seem to be performing better under his tutelage.

That was the Jock Stein trick.
