Dead rubber day

378

Celtic arrive in Prague tomorrow for a game many of us consider a dead rubber.  The thumping Sparta inflected at Celtic Park still smarts and almost certainly ended the competitive element of our Europa League campaign.  The most we can hope for is a cohesive performance and an injury and illness free trip.  A defeat, even a heavy defeat, will not resonate as much as the draw at Easter Road.

For me, the pace quickens at the weekend, when your clean sheet domestic record goes on the line for the 36th consecutive time.  We can only hope the week will be used productively.

I was at the Neuchatel return leg and even factoring in my blind faith at age 22, we really could have won 4-0 and gone through. We missed a pen (Miller i think) and a hatful of clear chances right in front of me

I really enjoyed watching Brady’s teams despite the lack of success

  2. I admit that I don’t scroll through every Celtic fan site but I haven’t seen any of the abuse that’s allegedly been directed by our fans at NFL.

On here, I see people unhappy that we’re imploded in what was touted as an important season for the club.

In the information vacuum that Celtic love to encourage, fans all left to speculate & hypothesize on the reasons for our collapse & the possible solutions. Changing our manager is an obvious answer to both those questions, but especially in the absence of any sign of consistent improvement in performance or morale.

It seems to me that Paul67’s leaders are becoming as short & defensive as Neil’s post match media sessions.

IF we were doing badly in the EL but still winning league games…

IF our closest rival was losing or playing poorly in either of those tournaments…

IF plausible explanations for our collapse were generally accepted & we had grounds for optimism…

THEN we might have reasonable hope.

I don’t know what NFL can say to motivate our players – I understand that motivating players is his principal coaching weapon – if they can’t be up for CL qualifiers, 6 pointer games against Sevco & possibly against Aberdeen (if we don’t find our mojo soon).

We know there is a morale problem at Celtic.

We know that team selection & shape has been wonky pretty much all season.

We know that Sevco are better organised & coached

We know that talk of their finances V ours is a grand distraction

We know that just as winning becomes a habit so does losing (or just not winning)

We know that NO Celtic player looks unaffected by the negative attention the team is getting, while some look like they’ve lost all confidence.

Did I verbally abuse anyone on here?

Think a lot of people would share my views and have but don’t get singled out on here.

Nothing better to do with your time?

We’ll do our best to hand them £35m of Champions League money. They’ll sell Morelos and Barisic and the finances won’t look anywhere near as bad…

But I’m sure you think calling posters

    Chump Hun Bitch

    Huns

    Sleekit

    etc is ok?

  7. A dead rubber? We were a Pot 1 team. We are the number one seed in the group. No laughing at the back.

I said last season, the League Cup provides the ideal opportunity to rest key players and give squad players valuable game time. November/December is far too congested for us when we are competing on four fronts and losing a swathe of players every time there are internationals on. You have to be smart, rotate the squad and give fringe players a chance.

I have debated this on here before. Some say always play your strongest XI but it is not feasible. Something has to give. Alex Ferguson, Wenger, Mourinho etc realised this years ago and used the league cup as a reserve match tournament. Priority is League and CL. That’s 3 games a week for them before you add in FA cup and international duties.

The Europa Cup is similarly demanding now and much, much more prestigious than the league cup. A decent showing in it is much more valuable to us than just monetary reward. Milan home and away? What a chance for players to get noticed and for our club to attract the next Dembele or Edouard.

    We need these games.

The huns will be using their impressive EL exploits to attract players that wouldn’t have looked at them 2 years ago.

Aye, let’s focus on Ross County. That’s the big game this week.

  8. Its fairly obvious we have these supporters who are absolutely addicted to basking in the reflected glory that comes from Celtic’s domination of Scottish football,

nothing wrong with that of course, providing you can handle the withdrawal symptoms that come along supposing we stumble into a temporary losing streak,

unfortunately we know there are some who can’t handle it, you will see them on here blasting away at all things Celtic, expecting everybody to agree with them,

all of a sudden they are putting the boot into Celtic big time from top to bottom – on a Celtic website – and take the huff when they don’t get universal approval,

absolutely laughable, think I know who they are and it will be a scroll by from now on.

  9. I’m not sure that the answer to any of our current problems lie in ‘rotating the players’ to be honest.

  10. Just saw second half of under 19s game. Some good lhads in that team. Worked hard for one another and did not give much away to Thistle. Why can they pass around with ease and well….Still I will keep the faith despite so many disappointments recently.

  11. One night in Lisbon, There are many here would prefer to see a change of Manager but they don’t use your type of language to express their views.

At this stage I would prefer to see a change in Manager myself but I would not for the life me be disrespectful of Neil Lennon.

I also feel that Brooney should no longer be a guaranteed starter but again the man has been a Legend at the Club and I wouldn’t dream of slagging him off.

I have little doubt that Lennon thinks he can turn things around so why would he resign, its the Board’s call & ultimately it’s Desmond’s call,

Direct your ire at them & not at Lenny.

  12. onenightinlisbon on

It’s fairly obvious we have a number of posters who are willing to accept the downgrading of our club.

Two wins out of eight, humiliated in Europe (again) and trailing in the league to an, at best, average team.

These same posters consider the manager as being exempt from any criticism and “go in the huff” when anyone dares call him by his second name…

No one on here wants us to fail or comes on to gloat when we do, I just wish those with their heads buried in the sand would accept that people are allowed their own opinion of what they can see with their own eyes.

I appreciate what you are saying re the language used.

I need to ensure that I am well away from my keyboard after a match.

  14. As far as Celtic are concerned, it’s business as usual. Neil Lennon’s position is secure and he has the backing of the hierarchy. They see it as being within reach of 5 points of Rangers, with 25 games to go – including 3 derbies. Mounting pressure now, but they’re not panicking.

  15. Let me put on record that I would welcome Martin O’Neill back with open Arms.

He is only 2nd to big Jock .

I won a small fortune betting fellow Tim’s / Scotland fans that he would finish above WGS ‘s Scotland and qualify for the euros.

He did it with a weaker squad .

He would not be a step back .

He would make an instant improvement.

    BIG WAVY

Does it mention anything about what the board are doing in practical terms to assist the manager in overturning the deficit?

  17. See whats happening to our support .throwing in the towel,Why because they know with LENNON and CO ,still there the 10 isnt going to happen. What about the other Board members especially if u to believe they are good Celtic Fans ie WULLIE HAUGHEY .MICHAEL McDONALD etc what do they really think , or do they jus go along with what DERMOT DESMOND and PETER LAWELL well if thats the case we would all be better THROWING IN THE TOWEL.

  18. Rock Tree Bhoy, I agree 100%.

Eaten bread is soon forgotten, we have won 9 in a row, we have won 3 consecutive Trebles, great chance to make it 4.

I am confident that no team will equal that record certainly not in our lifetime.

Like most I am bitterly disappointed at how this Season is going, I haven’t given up the ghost but at this stage it looks likely that we won’t win the ten in a row.

If it happens it will be a huge disappointment but life will go on.

There will be major changes at Celtic but next season there will be a team representing Celtic under a new Manager, we will press the reset button and enter a new Season with Hope in our Hearts.

If some are so sickened by failure to win ten that they opt out then that is their decision.

I can only speak for myself, if God spares me I will not opt out, in many ways lifting the weight of trying to continuously win trophies would be a relief and we could get back to enjoying the football.

  19. Big Wavy – I think your comment was in response to my post? To be fair, I didn’t say squad rotation was the answer to our problems but I did say it is something that should be happening and the League Cup is one of the best opportunities to do it.

Instead we see the same tired set of players being flogged to death.

MON was much the same. If his favourites could stand on two legs they were in the team.

    Cheers!

Nothing more I’m afraid but if I put myself in their shoes then they probably think they’ve backed him in expenditure, kept those who they could have sold and hired Gavin Strachan. “Over to you Neil” now it seems.

I have a horrible feeling we haven’t hit rock bottom yet.

What makes you think there will be major changes at Celtic next year, the board members who require to have put themselves forward for re election, so no changes coming there unless the block vote goes against, so where and what are the major changes?

One thing that would work a witholding of season ticket money and any other discretionary spending from the support to force change, these characters arent for upping sticks of their own accord.

  22. Apologies Deniabhoy. I should have explained that a settled team, system, partnerships and familiarity felt more important than rotating the team at this time. Both matter. The team look devoid of energy (some from minutes and some from their circumstances) and I don’t know if not playing fixes that.

Happy players find that extra yard on the pitch when enjoying their football.

  23. BIG JIMMY SO You think NEIL LENNON is getting a lot off abuse .me i think he is getting it easy , but hey he is the right guy to take us forward to the ten . Well up till now he has changed formation that much .that he dosent really know the best starting eleven .but its never his fault, but one thing ill bet on these crop off players are not buying into his way of going to win games, they in all truth want rid off him and you cant blame them.for all the tactics he wanted them to do it just didnt happen. What was his reply to the the media when the team lost, they are are lazy, they dont want to be here, the culture needs to change , no wonder they have downed tools, Abusive to Lennon ,wait and see what happens , if he is still at the club if 10 in a row isnt achieved.

  24. Dessybhoy, I reckon if Neil fails to win the ten he will certainly be away,

We already know there are a few of present squad who want away, Id expect under a new Manager a fairly big clean out with new guy bringing in players he fancies.

Think Pedro will have been CEO for 17 years by then he might decide enough is enough, by the way I know I’m in the minority on this one but I believe he has been an outstanding CEO, obviously well rewarded for his work.

I would never try to justify the earnings of the fat cats, he has done very well for himself at Celtic but in my opinion he has done a great job for the Club as well.
