Dear SFA, a joke hurt our feelings

1666

Can you imagine how a formal complaint about the comment ‘Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair’ would be composed?

‘Dear SFA, a rude man’s joke hurt our feelings.  Tell him straight, no more jokes!’

I clicked onto the NEW club’s site to confirm their reaction.  As well as complaining about a joke [it wouldn’t hurt if it wasn’t true], they complain about the Daily Record, “the paper is riddled from top to bottom with an anti-Rangers bias”, just to prove they also have a sense of humour.

They also attempted to put a stake in the ground by affirming that Pinsent Masons, now representing Scotland’s champions and sole Champions League participants, did not report to the police that Craig Whyte has any connection to the club/company.

No one has ever suggested that Pinsent Masons made such a report.  This is a bit like insisting that Ally McCoist will not manage the Champions League winners this season.  Pinsent Masons were far too busy taking instructions from their top client’s chief executive, in his non-comedic role.

What a laugh!

  1. See this ignoring of posts!

There are two sides to it.

Not every post deserves or needs a response. I would say the majority of mine, including some long ones, do not generate a response, and that’s fine. If I’ve said something uncontroversial or boring or matter of fact, nobody is going to want to point that out to me in a response unless they wish to do me some harm. It is not the reader’s responsibility to respond to me; it is my responsibility to say or ask something that generates an interest and a reply. If my first post dioesn’t cut it, then my next might or the one after that. Whenever it does, I will not be reduced to blaming the audience for any inadequacies on my part.

There are two obvious exceptions to this rule- the self -disclosed first time poster and the request for information.

I have never seen a disclosed first time poster fail to receive a welcome to CQN. It may have happened but I have not seen it. There may have been posters who, in making their first post, did not disclose that they were doing so and expected people to know, but the volume of traffic on here is so great that, unless you are a very familiar or regular name, nobody will know if its your first or tenth post. However, even then, it would be a very boring blog if every new poster received a welcome from every blogger online when they posted.

Similarly, with requests for information. Those blog readers who do not have the answer to your query do not and should not clog up the site by hundreds responding “I dunno!”. Obviously, if no one has responded, after a gap of ten minutes or so at peak time, or longer during the night shift, then some online poster should do the courtesy of posting a simple ” I dunno but hope somebody will be along later will pick up on it, if not, ask it again at a busier time”

In summary, unless you are a first time poster or asking a question, you should not have the expectation that there will be a response.

Now, on the specific case of west csc, my sympathies lie more with VP who responded to him/ her.

Just over a week ago, west csc was on CQN asking for info on Celtic supporter misdemeanours. He/she received a quick, courteous and neutral reply to his query. It did not stop him from writing in his reply, and I paraphrase, “Thanks for the reply. It is unusual for this site where I find CQN posters do not like to write or hear anything bad about the team or supporters and that makes them just as bad as the other side.”

It was responses like that, and the one last night which summoned up the Knights of Columbanus and catholic church hardliners as the people behind his hostile reception, that have led to suspicion on his/her motives.

I agree with the general principle behind being an open blog with good manners towards those seeking information or a welcome to the blog. However, I reserve the right to take offence at visiting journos sniffing for a scoop, waving a false flag, or trolls from the dark side, or even Celtic fans who think that CQN’s core is to promote a hardline(???) RC view or sectarianism.

I do not blame the posters expressing sympathy for westcsc as most will be unaware of his history and will have taken him at his word that he was called a hun because he was “trying to find out what happened in Amsterdam”.

I have one question to west csc and I won’t be offended if he does not answer. It is this:-

“Since you accused Celtic support of misdemeanours in Amsterdam last week, what is your response to the revelations emerging since then, especially in the CQN magazine, that put a different light on the police actions?”.

  2. I think the board get a lot of flak on here

They reduced our ticket price by £100 quid and yet season books are down. Is it going to get any better next year?

We are then asking them to increase costs for wages of non-footballing staff. A good cause of course. Doesn’t mean they won’t get it in the neck when we sell Van Dijk or Forster!

  3. I try and reply to posts… but I am always playing catch up with the blog and the conversation has moved on…

    I wonder what happened.

Maybe the poster expired have succumbed to malnutrition or consumption.

Walker…? Can’t see it myself, it’s one thing to score for a team like Motherwell, totally different to do it for Celtic… John Reilly for me

Green man/ BRTH. Milngavie has had a wee folk club for decades. I know a few of the guys who frequent the sessions. They also travel to a fair few folk nights around the country.

I think they still use the Corbie Hall and if you want to find out more about any nights they have coming up or where there is good sessions around the country go into the Talbot Arms as a fair few of them drink in there.

Then Paul came on the blog and informed us he was in fact posting from Galway, disny no make him a hun, but would greatly reduce the chances imo.

  17. Maestro no8…

The reason I remember it so well is because as a 9 year old it was my first SC cup tie, the first time I had been taken to the stand (my dad insisted) and before the match the lad who took me (sisters then boyfriend) told me if we won and got to the final he would take me. And he did!

Another thing…first time I realised the boys in the stand cursed and swore just like the rest lol.

What I didn’t realise was that was the last time we wore it. Did you notice from the pics Killie were in their change strip too?

  18. Paddy — don’t know if you have read it but I do a whole chapter comparing Willie Wallace’s stats to the likes of Gilzean and Joe Mason etc and Wispy’s statistics fair blow the others away.

No not read it, but would be much surprised. What stats were used for comparison.

Not to sure who Joe Mason that you refer to is?

As a further example, how did his stats’s compare to Joe McBride, Jackie McInally in the same playing era in Scottish Football.

Giving an example, look at Season 65-66 Goals For > Hearts 7th in League 40 goals fewer than Dunfermline.

How did Wullie say he got on playing against John Cushley?

  19. I firmly believe that the national minimum wage should be set at a level that allows people have a respectable standard of living. That it isn’t is a scandal in itself.

However until that occurs Celtic really should adopt the Living Wage.

I can see only one reason why they wouldn’t and it’s not really a decent excuse but as it stands the Living Wage is a bit arbitrary – albeit calculated and endorsed by some respectable organisations. There’s not much that would stop them increasing it to eg £8.50/hour, so as an employer I can see why they might be wary. As I say I don’t think its a reasonable excuse.

Looking at the list of companies signed up to it, there’s plenty on their that won’t really be employing people at that level anyway, so it’s a slightly hollow gesture.

    Sorry. Kids.

I’ve worked on less than the living wage and a zero hour contract for several years. The hours suit my lifestyle. The pay, conforming to the law of supply and demand, is fair for a job that isn’t entirely skill free. I am probably the least necessary employee in my section of the firm. If the living wage was introduced it might just inspire my bosses to realise just how much they could do without me. My remaining colleagues would pay for their extra cash with extra effort. I’ve heard plenty stories of similar happening this climate, usually without the pay rise. Last thing I need is a bunch of socialists depriving me of a set up that is very useful to me.

Back in May we had a few remarkable days on CQN when post after post about Seville added to a remarkable haul of stories – some funny, a few tragic and all together they formed a remarkable record of the Celtic support in Seville.

We gathered all these stories together – edited them so they were in a publishable format – and they will be included in SEVILLE, the new book from CQN which will be launched at CQTEN on Friday 14th March.

If you don’t mind I have edited your post – which I didn’t see previously – and have added to that section of the book.

One of the other things we did was send these stories to a CQN cartoonist (we have so many talented people on here!) and he has created a series of stunning cartoons featuring the CQNers in Seville. You will really enjoy these -they are so funny!

BRTH mentioned the iPad version on Magcloud – although mistaken stated that we added it recently – it has been available since we started the magazine! Very interesting evening last night with BRTH interviewing Pat Nevin. This will be included within the next edition of CQN Magazine, which promises to be a cracker! IMO the 7-2 Jinky game was probably his most complete 90 mins performance that I witnessed during his playing career – though his many contributions to major results (EC67 etc) cannot be overlooked.

He was sensational – I seem to recall from kick-off (2nd half) he waltzed through the Dundee United side and struck the bar.

Might be my memory playing tricks on me – but I am sure Davy Wilson had his arm around him as he walked him off the park at the end of the match to an impromptu guard of honour from the Dundee Utd players.

Fantastic game – would love to find footage of it!

Occasionally went there when I was a teenager [ a long time ago ]

The venue was an upstairs room in the Black Bull . Club was run by a man called Bobby Harvey..My memory says the music was mostly fiddles and squeeze box stuff but I have a memory of seeing The Humblebums there.

The Black Bull was a wee bit of a problem for me. . Had to meet a guy there on a Saturday evening in January 1967. Bar was full of unhappy Huns { it being Berwick Rangers day !] I got spotted , a wee bit of violence ensued and had to take great care in Milngavie for years thereafter

  26. I would like to apologise if this has been discussed before but, with respect to the events of the rebel takeover in 1994. According to our friends Jim Delahunt and Hugh Keevins on Radio Clyde Superscoreboard on Friday night we were minutes from closure – no administration process.

Looks fantastic and full to the brim with great topics and stories.

    Cheers!!

  29. j67 , if it’s the same crew , they turned up in The Phoenix and spoke to Morrissey. After 10 mins or so , he decided to get rid of them by getting me to bore them about The Kano Foundation.

We got the distinct impression that they were looking to dish the dirt on our fans as the opening remarks were similar to ” we can’t believe that Celtic fans aren’t interested in fighting” .

Their closing comments cut me to the quick tho’ when they said they were really looking to talk to some “young” supporters !

Young , young !! I’ve been the same age , mentally for the last 30 years .
