Demonising liquidation carries risk

990

I didn’t hear the scores of other games this weekend until today when I read a red card protest (remember the day Celtic fans gave birth to this concept?) occurred at Ibrox to demonstrate disapproval to any potential new owner who plans to liquidate Rangers.

It would be preferable to everyone if Rangers paid their bills, restoring a degree of dignity, although apparently no one is offering to do this.  Publicly bidders for the club will all confirm their preference is to exit administration via a Creditors Voluntary Arrangement (CVA).  Offering pennies in the pound for a company is unquestionably a great deal, for the buyer, but whoever is nominated as preferred bidder this week is likely to have a serious option to liquidate the club.

Demonising the liquidation option carries risks for Rangers fans.  Short of raising considerably more money than they have thus far and paying their bills, there is little fan power can do right now.  If liquidation is the best option for creditors it will happen, better to accept the reality of the situation.  Whatever the resulting phoenix club is called, if the new owners inherit animosity from the start it will only diminish the potential of their new club.

Aye. The old red card protest was a hoot right enough.

It may have been more effective had they demonstrated 18 months ago when people like yourself and Phil Mac Giolla Bhain were warning of the impending dangers facing the club with an extremely chequered history.

But they chose to laugh, mock and abuse instead. I believe the phrase is ‘too little too late’…

Can’t see Hooper going anywhere. he wants to stay & Lenny wants him to stay. We don’t have to sell. We will sell squad players. HH

It’s not just about those individual players, it’s how they combine together. I mentioned before the Killie game that the midfield of Brown, Ki and Ledley, with Commons playing behind the strikers looked to be our strongest, although we only had the Dunfermline home game to go on. Now we have the 1st half at Killie – they blitzed the opposition midfield. Can’t see past them right now.

  6. If HMRC accept less than they are due from the huns, by way of a CVA, does that not amount to state aid for a football club?

There’s no difference between HMRC writing off tens of millions of pounds of debt and the state giving the huns a cheque for tens of millions of pounds.

So maybe every club in the SPL should be demanding a hand out from the state.

  7. Paul 67

Duff £ Phelps will want to propose a CVA , in order that HMRC take the blame for taking Dignity (IA) down via a winding up order , as soon as the FTT is announced.

I suspect that the FTT findings wil be shocking and will expose Dignity (IA) to further ridicule , as it would appear that directors, players and agents had their noses in the tax free trough, whilst dancing to SDM’s tune.

I further suspect that HMRC will be just fine with taking Dignity down before the end of the season thus taking them to zero points for this season …….

…..also Duff £ Phelps desperately need the £1m non-returnable deposit for the preferred bidder to keep the show on the road …… Doing the sums Dignity are a busted flush with no cash anytime soon, Friday 13 April 2012 , is as good a day as any to be consigned to history!

Good article, somewhat removed from ‘the reality’ of the the situation where ‘Gers fans’ and MSM are awaiting a new owner, a simple skip out of administration and a

‘carry on’ as if nothing had happened routine.

Whilst we still enjoy our richly deserved Championship win, we’ve still to endure the Blue Knights takeover which will be rolled out and heralded as a triumph as early as this week.

My guess is that we’ll get propaganda, and deceit until HMRC make know their decision, only then will any red card to liquidation symbolism, be truly meaningless.

Great quotes there from oldtim. Here’s one from Big Jan to add to the list:

“When I first arrived at Celtic, I thought I understood the tradition of the club, but I didn’t. The Scottish boys helped me. I had to learn and I was soon addicted to Celtic. I started to understand the culture and in time it became like an infection. It’s still with me. Regardless of your nationality, Celtic never leaves you.” Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink

Stuck in France for while at airport on Saturday, with a media company owner (used to be my neighbour). Had a meeting with Whytey in Dec last year & wanted to liquidate them then & will make millions when they phoenix. Also says Jack Steadmans (ex bankie owner) son is involved with USA bid for huns, may only be UK pr part of it. Jabba has 2 daughters in Oz, that is why he has spent so much time there, apart from his redundancy at record. Jabba total snake, likes a wee chorus of the sash when away in Europe, has had a few run ins with him.

He is not in written press.

There is nothing actually there to save. They need to redefine their business model, build up their scouting systems, get the right coaching in so it is football and not rugby they coach (the Danny Lennon, Kenny Shiels approach as opposed to the Myths ).

That will not happen overnight, Celtic are now beginning to benefit from our whole approach but mistakes were made on the way, they will make mistakes too.

The quicker everybody SFA/SPL/Rangers/the Game accepts this reality the better, but on Saturday their support was holding red cards up to it.

My favourite line from The Prophet is

“Pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding”

The idea of losing their identity is just too painful for them to face. But when reality makes them face it, they will realise how unhealthy their understanding of reality has been for them.

It’s just not going to happen. There is more chance of someone coming in and paying all their debts off, than HMRC doing a deal over the debt – and that is never going to happen either.

As confirmed by Maureen Leslie (MLM Solutions) on Newsnight Scotland, HMRC have a clear stated policy as regards CVAs. They have been hampered, in England by the Football Creditors rule, a rule they are now challenging in the courts. She also stated, and I am paraphrasing here, that she could not see any prospect of an investor, or investors being prepared to take responsibility for £134 million of debt. So, if HMRC not party to CVA, liquidation looms. If I am not mistaken, Portsmouth have already had a CVA, and are now back in administration, thirty five workers sacked, one player still being paid £30,000+ per week. Not exactly a model solution now is it? Of course Rangers could always turn to Alex Salmond for help, this is the guy who gave Amazon £10 million towards a new distribution centre in Dunfermline. Amazon, you know the company that generated £7.5 billion of sales in Great Britain over the last three years, and paid exactly zero in Corporation Tax. Yes that one!

If we get to the Scottish Cup Final, I may break my 12 year Bhoycott and go to Hampden …….. I’m even thinking of going to all away games again, if the ‘penny has finally dropped’ that ‘favouring’ any one team destroys the SPORT ethic …….. It shouldn’t be difficult for the SFA / ESTABLISHMENT to revert to fairness for all teams, since their former favourites have very badly damaged Scotland’s football reputation world-wide……..

  25. Hey,Paul67,do you never sleep? Ta for the article,by the way;it gives us all a new topic to rip into Rankers with after one of the best weekends I can remember in Celtic’s illustrious history.

Our title being called ‘tainted’ by ANYONE is a total irrelevance. We have won…end of. The undead over in Govan have brought their woes upon themselves, and the likes of Gollum givin’ them THREE soft penalties can change NOTHING. As the league has been won, fairly, and with players we could afford, the record books will show this. The amount of points means nothing….on October 15th. 2011 the naysayers wrote us off. Here we are…the most incredible turnaround and karma catching up with Rankers.
