Derision, hiding, wanting to win the league?

935

I don’t know is that was the worst home performance I’ve seen, but it was up there. We look like a broken team. Dundee were comfortable throughout, limited Celtic to one genuine chance in the game (in the 76th minute), and caused havoc during their regular attacks on Craig Gordon’s goals. Their best chance came from a corner kick (what else), which was sent over by a player who stopped to head the ball from 5 yards.

Charlie Mulgrew is not the most gifted player, he’s not a central midfielder and he’s not game-fit yet, but despite putting in an indifferent shift last night, he never hid.  The juxtaposition between him and others was stark.  We need players with attitude – the captain back on form, Kris Commons fully fit and starting, and others taking their lead.

Confidence is on the floor. Mistakes, backwards passing and long balls forward were all subject to derision, but I think last night was the first time I’ve heard a Celtic substitute being booed onto the field.  All because he doesn’t want to renew a contract for his position as occasionally-used squad player.  The seriousness of the situation is clearly lost on those who want to boo a player taking the field instead of encouraging the guy to help us win a game.  The whole experience got me thinking, how many of us actually want to win this league?

You better believe they want to win it at Pittodrie.  They have focus, form, packed stands and patience.  They also enjoy the ‘Leicester City effect’ – everyone not competing directly with them wants them to win.  The rest of Scottish football is desperate for us to tear ourselves apart right now.  We need to circle the wagons, live up to the reputation we like to think we have, and play our role in delivering this title.

You want 10-in-a-row?  Bring me your complaints in May, but for now get your shoulder to the wheel.  This is not our first performance crisis and it won’t be our last, as a collective, we need to be smart in dealing with these situations.

Everyone at Celtic Park (and beyond) knows this is not good enough, and there’s going to need to be big changes in the summer, but we need to get our act together and put the inquest on hold until the end of the season.

  1. The Onlooker on

    Stebhoy

Moneyball was also a bit more than just stats.

It tried to look for players who brought an intangible element to the game behind the core stats that were traditionally valued in baseball (all teams are now using analytics and sabermetrics.

It then moved to other sports eg in basketball it captured instances where players who did not appear to have great stats in terms of blocks, catching rebounds etc. however the opposition scored less points per 5 mins when they were on the park.

The stats guys realised that there was an unrecorded element at work, it was an ability to read the game, seeing the danger ,getting over to mark the threat and force opponent pass to a different player, in a worse position.

A bit like having Marc Rieper or Paul McGrath on the field.

Our current state of affairs could use a huge deal of analysis.

Eg Craig Gordon goal kicks are awful, he rarely throws the ball after catching at corners, he stifles any chance of a breakout play…. how much better would we be with Billy….

Tierney is great , and will be a great, however if we measured his effectiveness linking up field to that of Emilio does it give us less or more?

Dedryck panics when he receives the ball , however he is given the ball too often by team mates, and the ball goes back or square….. is this a net negative to other options?

Midfield win almost no headers (see Craig Gordon kick outs)

We take almost no shots early, passing across the box (send team out to try 10 mins of shoot on sight)

Our defending corners is poor ,every man back almost every time…. nobody available for a break away…(see C Gordon)

    Our attacking corners are wasteful,

last night Dundee mixed up their corners, players grouping in the penalty arc then sprinting in as the ball came in, causing chaos and panic in our defence, the ball was scrambled out for another corner.

The Dundee players this time all grouped in the 6 yard box, and continued to use variety in their approach.

We prefer to use the same tactics over and over in the hope that we might get lucky eventually.

Its perhaps too radical an approach for us……… actually preparing for a game….. ( sell Lennoxtown as we obviously aren’t making any use of it :)

That is just a few of the areas, I would be less concerned about the future if I read that we addressing the fundamentals of passing , tactics, strategies, measuring our effectiveness so we (Ronny) know our best team.

The man on the side line, with his hands in pockets, may be thinking deep football thoughts….

I suspect he is wondering what has happened to his dreams and is pining for the Fjords.

    Sorry for the ramble

I started this intending a quick comment to Stebhoy re moneyball post and meandered all over the place.

  2. Can not believe this patter ” The whole experience got me thinking, how many of us actually want to win this league?”

Fans out of order? Fair enough I’ll buy that but don’t deflect from the real story, these players are massively under performing when did they last come back from a goal down int any game to go on and win?

Come back and we’ll talk in the summer? Too late

Several teams over the years have been forced to or voluntary made change and benefited.

Change now get in someone who knows how to organise a team gain a spike in performances and results then if required change in summer when league is secure, continue as we are and could be a long period of regret.

The writing is on the wall.

If you are still around, you can go into settings on your phone and turn off JavaScript to solve that problem.

We posted MINCE instead of a match photograph last week and Celtic have moaned about our content. Paul writes the blog as he sees it and everyone is free to disagree.

  4. Any half decent Manager will have this team set up correctly v Ronnys Celtic. And that’s why I’m worried about Sunday.I’ll be there but at this moment I really don’t know why

  5. Paul67s leader has not worked in passing the responsibility onto the supporters.

Plan B must be to blame the SFA, referees or the what Dave King had for breakfast.

We should face up to facts. Deila is done – finito – caput. Need interim tomorrow.

Lawwell can go in the summer when he hits the £10M in compensation from Celtic. He is the architect of the mess and has been handsomely rewarded at the same time.

It will only get worse if change is not made now.

  6. Hamilton game Ronny gives Scott Allan a long awaited start. Allan was one of the better performers on the night. He is dropped in favour of Charlie next game and is not one of 3 Subs used, Roberts doesn’t get a call from the bench for Hamilton game gets the 90 minutes against Dundee.

Ronny plays a settled back four even though Lustig has been poor but at least it’s a settled 4. He plays Brooney if he is fit even though the man is only a shadow of himself, he also plays Griffiths who is also on a dip in form. Beyond that it looks like he throws names in a hat and it’s pot luck who the other 4 might be.

He is here almost two years and he is like a beaten gambler throwing formations together in the hope that one might click.

James Forrest looks like he has mentally left Celtic over the past 3 months, when he came on at half time I almost wept.

Richards did nothing but foul, Kris just did nothing. Meanwhile Allan & Christie just sat on the bench.

Part of me says Ronny is a nice guy etc. but if he blows this League there will be nothing nice about that.

Last night was the straw that broke the Cork Camel’s back, I just want rid of Ronny and his two side kicks as soon as possible.

    Interesting last para Paul.

Inquest on hold until end of the season?

53 days between cup final and 2nd qualifying round of champions league.

Hold inquest, sack some, transfer list others, agree severances, find replacements, shape a team, execute a pre- season programme all in 53 days?

    Hail hail

  8. After teh HA game when Ronny said what he said re Boyata, maybes the showing last night was the proof that he needed that the dressing room is well and truly lost.

Just speculation, but if the players have given up and it looks like they might have, he will never recover it, never in a month of sundays.

  9. TET

Were you serious last night that Jim McGuinness, a Gaelic football coach, should take over from Ronny?

  11. as I mentioned last night when the team was announced CM should be nowhere near the first 11 or the subs bench, absolutely crap total imposter for a celtic player and not the only one.

  12. I agree with most comments and had a long hard think about this since the latest performance. The team has no leadership. Commons started the previous match and was replaced when boyata was sent off. He started the game because Deila thought he was ready and could improve the side. Why then, didn’t he start the next game? I just don’t get it.

The lad Christie , who has experience at this level, has been playing well for development team, comes in an lights the team up – gives us the energy and spark – yet he doesn’t get a look in.

I’d go 3-5-2 with these players – get youth and hunger on now and we will get over the line. Delia is tinkering too much – he’s confused the fans, he’s confused the players, and he’s confused himself. He must see we need drastic change otherwise he will lose his job. He has absolutely everything to gain sine he is dead man walking right now.

BTW – I’ve been a supporter of RD and the board strategy from day 1 , it was a risk worth taking and we may not see the fruits of youth dev for a few years yet, however when the league is in doubt and the team looks flat , lost and lacking confidence with 10 games to go – i want the title and whatever it takes regardless of feeling sorry for a man exposed and out of his depth. The idea of him and Lennon was a team was a good shout – why not try that now!! he needs help and there is not shame in admitting it

  13. Aberdeen have approximately 112 staff to our 500. Which might go some way towards explaining why their staff costs are £6.6M and ours are £33.2M

I was going to take that somewhere but I’ve forgotten where it was.

  14. Stairheedrammy on

Outplayed, outfought, out manoeuvred and out supported by Dundee at Celtic park. We should all hang our heads in shame.

  15. HT

Football is a simple game, players need to play to their strengths, the team needs to be set up to accomodate the players, the present coaching staff are not doing this, square pegs etc, they are not in any way shape or form playing as a team.

I have no idea why this is, but something needs sorted before the unthinkable happens, and it could.

So in a way yes, I was agreeing with ThomTheThim, it was his suggestion, he is a winner, he knows how to motivate players, he obviously knows about how football works, why not, would it be any worse than it is presently.

BTW, the suggestion wasn’t that he take over, it was to let him loose on the first team, he is working with the kids, and the first team that needs all the help it can get.

The crowd have turned against RD and whether this is justified or not we are unlikely to win the league with our own crowd against us. Thank God we have so many away games coming up.

  22. Was pretty sure Deila was gone today..seems like he is here for the rest of the season.

If it’s the summer he goes it Won’t give our new manager much time to get the squad ready for CL qualifiers if we have them. Typical Celtic

Make the change now and give the new coach time to decide who he wants to keep.

Has any Scottish team every sacked there manager at this time of the season when that team were top of the league and still in the Scottish cup ? As far as I know the answer is no. Ronny and the team are going through a poor time now I really have no idea why I could guess but what is the point of that ? I really think we need to circle the wagons and not listen to the MSM we need to get right behind Ronny and the team and hope we see improvement this is not the time for change it is the time for unity we can discuss changes if they are required at the end of the season. H.H.

I think you are saying get behind the team, get 5 in a row and change the manager in the summer.

    I agree.

If that’s the plan, we better have a new boss secured now and ready to step in immediately to begin work.

  29. Paul 67,

I’ve just logged on and haven’t read back, nor am I going to.

You are of course right. We can’t turn the clock back and we all want Celtic to win the league but what you say only addresses part of the whole story.

Ronny bangs on and on and continuously on about continuous professional development – and all the other crass, classroom, management speak – but the truth is we are not developing. We are getting worse. And we have been getting worse by the week since August 2014. Tony Mowbray was given 10 months, this man has been given 2 years (almost) and we are in a worse state than we were when he took over. With Rangers being liquidated this was a magnificent opportunity for our club to take strident steps forward in an attempt to notch up 10-in-a-row. What happened? The board appointed some star struck low level manager who regurgitated his management manual at interview. The board therefore is also culpable in our shocking and shameful fall into mediocrity and that, Paul, is why there is derision from the stands.

I was there last night. I did not boo but I understand why many did and until you and many others admit Ronny is a mistake (and like all mistakes) and must be rectified, then you are are not really addressing the complete issue. Ronny should have gone in January 2015. He didn’t! He should have gone in June 2015. He didn’t! He should have gone in January 2016. He didn’t! Do you see where this is going?
