Direction of travel encouraging for Scottish football

759

It’s heartening to see Celtic linked with a raft of players over the weekend and encouraging for many but I’d ignore everything you read about a Celtic target this far out from the transfer window opening.  All an agent needs to do is post a DVD to Lennoxtown to be able to legitimately link his player to Celtic.  The club will also scout up to 100 players a season, enough to keep you busy on the stats sites for hours, but even Ronny doesn’t know who he will be signing at this stage of the season.

After 11 wins in 13 league games Aberdeen’s title challenge inevitably slipped.  They’ve won once since February, coming from behind against Motherwell at Pittodrie, as Celtic, Dundee and Partick Thistle have taken points from them.  We are at the stage of the season when injuries, suspensions and fatigue kick in.  Whereas Celtic were able to add quality to their squad in January, Aberdeen have to work on a tighter budget.  That the gap at the top is only seven points, with Celtic having a game in hand, says a lot for the direction of travel at Aberdeen.

If Ronny gets his treble wish, this season’s title will be a lot tighter than the last treble, won at a canter by Martin O’Neill.  It was a weaker league back then, Aberdeen were rubbish.

Talking about direction of travel, have you been watching the ebay auction for Hospitality for four for a day at this year’s Open Golf Championship at St Andrews?  This is a unique prize and has attracted some incredible support.

The auction is in aid of the Celtic Quick News appeal to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.  Shuttle transport for the five minute journey to and from the golf course as needed, with beer, Gin and Whisky tastings throughout the day with the master distiller.

You also have the chance to create a unique CQN single malt whisky cask worth potentially £5000 for future CQN charities, and you will receive a bottle of this very special single malt whisky to commemorate the great day when it is bottled in several years.

Eden Mill is Scotland’s newest and most innovative distillery and brewery incorporated in February 2012!  Located just 2 miles from the famous Old Course itself it provides a perfect base for hospitality for yourself and 3 friends on a day of your choosing at the forthcoming open golf championship on July 16th to 19th.

But this is so much more than just a day’s hospitality at the home of golf.  Before taking to the course to watch, you will enjoy a breakfast roll or two and discuss your perfect single malt whisky with the master distiller.

Whilst you and your friends are enjoying the golf he will seek to surpass your favourite whisky by using the best barley to create the right wash and recommending the right type of barrels for our very own unique CQN 1/4 cask of single malt.  A cask which will mature and provide over £5000 of future funding for our charities in a few years’ time.

You will return to the distillery by shuttle bus for lunch and an optional beer tasting and then for afternoon tea with a tutored gin and whisky tasting with the owner capping off a memorable, unique and very special day for your group and for CQN.

My thanks to Eden Mill for their incredible support.  You can bid on the auction here.

Don’t agree that the competition was weaker in 2000/01. The standard now is much weaker, there are teams in the league who literally cannot lay a glove on us. A lot of money was spent back in the day. The middle of the road teams were much stronger. The gap between us and the rest now is a lot bigger.

  6. Am I alone in feeling that with the passing of the likes of Turnbull Hutton and Paul Mcbride there is a dearth of folks who will speak up?

There doesnt seem to be anyone at Celtic to fill this role.

Is this vacuum currently being filled by the likes of Keith Jackson and Stewart Regan?

When longstanding posters do not appear for a while I am often of the view that they are still out there, somewhere. (There is a song in there too, but I think Bernstein and Sondeheim got there first). That said, after reading Derbyshirebhoy’s story of the trip to Seville and back, (think he did make it back), I realise that Peter really was out there. And you know something he still is. Somewhere.

    WHY DID I DO IT?

Just lost one and a half hours there listening to SSB from last night, a pure hun love in….their back………..Stuart has got us playing great noo……………………….blah blah fkn blah.

I need to seriously get out more !!!!!

    ——————————————————————————–

sometimes….just sometimes there is a something said on the hun-in that is way to advanced for those rolling the turd in glitter.this was the case with 2 calls last night.

Call1.The chap who phoned in suggesting wee petition sky so that Scottish subscriptions to sky be ring fenced. He put the figure in the region of £10m,that could be put into the scottish game by scottish subscribers. The panelists put it down to ‘market forces’ trying to broadsweep the caller and make him out as tho his idea made no sense. To me it makes perfect sense.

The panel then went onto talk of the amount of money going into the ENGLISH game as a result of the EPLs new telly deal. That deal is part financed by scottish subscribers, does nothing for the scottish game and in actual fact sees revenue leaving scottish football to support those poor wee players stuck in the EPL poverty trap.

Call2 The very last Caller.Young man take a bow.His suggestion was ‘internet streaming’

direct to whichever platform you wish, telly,pc,tablet, phone etc, based on the model used by WWF wrestling(the updated american form of mickmcmanus et al) which you suscribe to,

which streams whatever content you have subscribed to directly to whichever platform you are comfortable with.No sky,no BT. He was suggesting this could be set up by our league and say for £10 a month you can have all the content you wish for.Now if you think of this on a global basis that is a lot of money coming into our game.

I thought it was a rare idea and i concur with the callers sentiments ending that he did not want Murdochs trash coming thro his telly.

The panel explained their love of all things EPL but no one asked them if it was for the betterment of the scottish game would they give it up.but the hun-in had the big poosh for McCalli to be manager of the year.

I also dont like how it suits sky to shaft scottish football on its champions league coverage.

Hope your well Burgas,sky/murdoch it a ‘Q’ for a rant

Listened to them last night too.

In summary the panellists Guidi and Dalziel assisted by compere Braiden displayed ignorance, inconsistency and self interest that would have shamed Keevins.

At least Dalziel admitted this was the case.

Braiden, after the first call you referenced, did mention that £1 billion would be cascaded to ENGLISH grass-roots football. The comment wasn’t expanded on or discussed.

    Shocking stat.

My favourite stat was that England from 1962 until 2010 had never been behind at half time in a WC finals game – something like 40+ matches.

And if that famous Lampard disallowed goal had stood against Germany in 2010, it would have been extended.

  21. oneofthe70percent on

The reason the gap has closed from last season is the appointment of a duff manager on the cheap , we have looked poor all season in most games we do not create enough real chances,we play with one striker and it,s a different one every week, seems if a striker scores he,s dropped, the idea that the league is stronger than in o,neils time is the biggest load of rubbish written on this site( and there has been loads written in the past),we should be 30 points ahead as we were last season with a average manager, now weve got a diddy who,s main achievement is punching the air in front of the easily swayed in the crowd.

  25. England only managed 2 games after that – they were 1-0 down to Uruguay at HT last year.

Hard to guess why that record lasted as long as it did. The big guns – Germany, Brazil, Italy, Argentina etc never managed anything like it.

A few things had something to do with it – England generally did well in their group matches, they never lost by more than one goal and their games were pretty low scoring.

  26. @oneofthe70percent

    – “now weve got a diddy who,s main achievement is punching the air in front of the easily swayed in the crowd”

He won a league title in Norway with an unfancied club. They had only been league champions once before. Decades ago.

The team apparently played with a bit of style and he promoted young players to the first team.

    – we play with one striker and it,s a different one every week

It’s been mainly Griffiths. Do we have to play 4-4-2 for all eternity?

    Hugh, is that you?

I just saw HT”s post about having a spare ticket for this weekend.

Being so far away, and not being able to get to Scotland very often, I must admit that get a bit jealous when I read about you guys seeing so many games and, as much, when you guys meet up, even just at CQN corner for games. There are a lot of posterson CQN who, from their posts, I know I would really enjoy meeting in person.

Between work, and family, it is difficult to get the time and money to get back to Scotland (it has been 2 years now since I was back). Of course, there is also a part of me that wants to see other parts of the world that I have not yet seen …. (I would love to take in a game in Argentina or Brasil, for example)…. and choices have to be made.

I had thought about trying to get back this year for the cup final, but now it looks like we will be going back to Oz for the in-laws 50th wedding anniversary…. so, even though I probably wont make it to CQN corner this season, it is not like I can complain.

But, sitting here right now, there is a part of me that wanted to write back to HT, say ‘i will take those tickets’, and hop on a plane! Ah, well …

Just wanted to say that I hope you guys (and ghals) that do make the games this week, really enjoy them and really enjoy each other’s company.

    Hail hail
