Doncaster deal allows clubs to offer season ticket package

109

From what I hear, there has been a divergence in season ticket sales across Scottish Premiership clubs, some have sold very healthy numbers while others have scarcely moved the dial.  There are a number of headwinds but one particular doubt lifted yesterday – what will happen when games are played behind closed doors (BCD).

The League and Sky TV agreed that clubs will be able to sell streaming content for games played BCD to fans in numbers limited to last year’s season ticket sales.  This allows clubs to bundle watch-at-home rights to BCD games with season tickets.

On top of the SPFL agreement with Sky to limit rebate on last season to £1.5m (payable over 5 years), this is a great win for Neil Doncaster.  Many revenue streams will still be down at every club, watch-from-home will not fill club shops pre-match, sell food or lucrative hospitality seats, but clubs can offer fans a season ticket package.

In Scotland, season ticket sales are the most fundamental aspect of clubs’ income.  Apart from a couple, who budget on income from TV, pitch hire and three bumper away crowds per season, most Premiership sides need to sell consistent numbers of season tickets to maintain existing levels of spend.  This deal will allow most, including Celtic, to continue trading at something close to normal levels.

My suspicion is sales will be healthy at Celtic – it is THE season, we will all want to be there at it’s conclusion and see as much of it as possible when BCD.  Hibs sales are already healthy – I think of this as the Ann Budge Bounce, Dundee United will sell numbers not seen in a decade and Motherwell will see a bounce after such a good year.

My gut feel is that Newco will sell well.  If nothing else, they have played to their base in recent months.  Selling the Staunch ticket may be the only option open to them after all, there’s not much appeal in ‘Be here for Celtic’s 10 season, we’re sure to finish second’.  No more on their financial matters for now.

There are a clutch of clubs I expect to suffer, Aberdeen, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock.  Rightsizing the player pool will be a major challenge for each.

McKenna no thank you, if he was signed then would certainly get more attention from the Mibs for his robust style.

  2. Could you imagine next season we could be a couple of injuries away from a Hendry – McKenna CH partnership….

his videos were always brilliant, i bet he misses the celts more than everyone else

  4. Mckenna isn’t the one. But either way, I don’t think it will come to that.

Ajer will only be sold for his valuation. I don’t think clubs will come in with that lonely this summer.

  5. Right now I’m furloughed.

I have read EVERY word about Scottish football for the last 3 months.

There is not 1 single word from a Sevco player in 2 months.

Are they furloughed or in the huff?

Fat boy regularly scores against Aberdeen when being marked by McKenna.

Fat boy has never scored against us.

Remember Jozo? Bad knee, bad defender, unreliable?

Well Jozo with his bad knee EASILY outjumped McKenna to score from a bog standard corner with the match clock showing 67 minutes.

Still photographs of the aerial dual were allegedly sent to NASA – after months of analysis they were still not able to determine if one could insert a newspaper under Scott’s studs.

No offence is intended to players or their dads.

  8. Good morning, friends, and a Big Happy Friday from a now dry but fresh feeling East Kilbride.

Be good to get a little more clarity from the Club on the 2020-21 season ticket arrangements. Even if they could say something along the lines of ‘for every game that we cannot allow you to attend you will receive a 2½% discount off the following year’s ticket price. So, for example, if it turns out that I was only given the chance to attend say 4 games out of the 19, then following season I’d get a discount of (15 x 2½%) 37½%. In addition, I’d have the facility to watch all of the coming season’s home league games ‘free’ on Celtic TV.

I’ve not yet renewed as basically I don’t yet know what I’d be paying for. But something along the lines suggested would be fine for me.

off to work (in my slippers).

  10. Good Morning – Wee Summer Shower Early On In The Fresh And Verdant Chilterns…

It seems Mr Doncaster is the hero of the hour once again, once again his genius alludes me. The fact that the details of the proposed deal with SKY TV for the forth coming season is virtually non-existent, the fact that he has negotiated this seasons SKY rebate to 1% of the deal is nonsense.

Now, SKY has a joint deal with BT for this season,s SPFL, I’m not sure how the figures work out but the SKY deal is about £10miliion – the rebate is £1.5million, to my way of thinking that’s 15%.

Also my understanding is the overall prize fund that stood at £25million last season was reduced to factors pertaining to circumstances around the pandemic – one factor being the season being cut short and the TV contracts not being fulfilled.

If the Clubs have already paid for this why are the monies still outstanding to SKY?

Did the SPFL executive forget to factor in some costs?

All of these impacts should have been fully understood and negotiated before the settlement of the league was finalised.

To be negotiating the conclusion of the last TV deal and trying to tie up any shortfalls over looked by the executive in the next TV deal is at best amateurish and in my opinion down right incompetent.

Spinning this as a SPFL win is ludicrous but these are the guys who were back slapping themselves over the five way agreement.

    Hail Hail

On another subject, have the 800 Celtic fans who forked approx £50 a head for the game at Ayebrokes been refunded yet?

    ———

Yes, Celtic still had the money. In addition, many had purchased tickets for the game at Easter Rd. That money also has been refunded.

This begs the question, why on earth can’t Celtic refund the money for those who wish a refund on their season ticket in exactly the same manner?

  12. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

Interesting comments on who we need to fill the “Sinclair hole”. I may be wrong (often am) but I believe our very own Jeremie Frimpong has played left back before? He is a class act and loves to attack ~ his delivery into the box has been very good so far. One of our famous Lisbon Lions switched from the right to the left very easily, not that I am comparing the two. Any thoughts?

  13. HT

My son has a box at Port Vale – pays about £7k for the season split between 8. Had 5 home games left out of 23 – so 22 % left or about £1,500. Even though the league has been called the club hasn’t been in touch except to promote next season.

  14. HAMILTONTIM on5TH JUNE 2020 9:04 AM

Hope you are well…..Am with you on your comment. Default position should have been refund with the ability to log onto website or send letter to say you wish it to be kept by Celtic. Having to request a refund left a bad taste for me. I applied for refund and renewed same day, that was my choice but I think to have to ask for your own money back is not correct.

  15. Gene

That’s really poor stuff from Port Vale. Has your son contacted the club regarding a refund on season past?

  16. Kelvinbhoy

I’m doing ok mate I hope you’re well!

I completely understand that Celtic wish to have as many ST holders as possible make the decision that they’ve paid for season 2019-‘20 so they’ll opt not to take a refund. Times are incredibly difficult for football clubs and Celtic won’t be an exception. However, it’s the manner in which they’ve gone about this that has scunnered me.

Celtic have refunded by bank transfer all monies from those who purchased tickets for Ibrox and Easter Rd. I find it incredible that they’ve decided to make it as awkward as possible for season ticket holders to get their refund in the same way. Why ask supporters to have to print off a form (many don’t have printers), complete the form and then have to go to the inconvenience and risk of having to go out to post it?!

I had absolutely no intention of asking for a refund and actually had a bit of a heated debate with my eldest stepson who’d chosen to take it :-) As a consequence of how this has been handled I’ve chosen now to reverse my initial decision and the form was posted yesterday.

That`s how I feel as well although I haven`t been able to bring myself to actually post my Refund application yet. Still deliberating. There MIGHT be a good reason for the way Celtic have handled this but it seems pretty grubby to me.

They wanted to make it as hard as possible to put a few people off who were wavering.

They don’t want you to pay for your renewal by cheque.

  20. So, lets get this right,…………thousands and thousands of entitled fans go to the Celtic FC website, click on the refunds page, download a form, scribble in your Season Ticket details, fire it to a P.O. Box – hey presto, voila, you get a full refund for every home game cancelled delivered in a cheque straight to your door by the postman courtesy of your club.

You don’t think Celtic have made the process much more difficult than it needed to be?

  23. My money came out of my bank to pay for season ticket and HTS, still does, why couldn’t they refund the money straight back into my bank? Seems odd the way they’ve gone about it, or is there some model which says not everybody cashes their cheque or forgets to do so, por cierto.

  24. Not once in all my 60 years of following the team have they asked me to download a form, scribble in my details, put it into an envelope, address it, go to a post office for a stamp, send it to a PO Box and wait for my Season Ticket, my replica strip, my paradise windfall ticket, Celtic pools, Cup Tickets, Champions League package, or merchandise, wonder why? por cierto

  25. Obviously Celtic would rather keep your money, they are a business trying to survive like any other, that is why they want to make it more difficult to get your money refunded… in the hope you wont do it
