Doncaster wriggling with rules

846

SPFL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, is clear on the subject of offensive singing at football games: “It remains the SPFL’s position that if it can be established that clubs have done everything required in overall management of the event pre-match, during the game and post-match then they have no case to answer”.

This may be the case, but if clubs fail to communicate appropriate instructions to fans after one transgression, which is quickly followed by a second transgression, Doncaster’s defence is moot.  The club has failed to do “everything required” pre-match and post-match, and is guilty under the rules, if applied.

Doncaster has employed a rhetorical technique.  When faced with a difficult scenario, make a statement which is in itself true, but the parameters of which do not match the scenario.

The chief executive of the Scottish Professional Football League’s comments this morning appear like an attempt to protect a member club from the League’s own rules.  He is paid to ensure rules are applied, not negated.

It is no business of his to defer responsibility to the police, or the Justice Ministry, which concocted this inept Offensive Behaviour Act in order to “equalise” criminality, where it didn’t exist, but will not lift a finger on this issue.

What do you know about Andy McAtee?  He signed for Celtic from Mossend Hibs in 1910 and left in 1924, having played 438 games on the right wing, scoring 75 goals.  He won six league titles and four Scottish Cups and was one of the earliest Celtic heroes.  During the Great War he fought in the Alps, and in Haig’s bloody field in the Somme.

When he, and other members of our first genuinely great team, retired, Celtic found it impossible to replace them.  We didn’t win another six titles until Inter manager, Helenio Herrera, watched our title win in May 1967.

The Celtic Graves Society mark his final resting place at Kilsyth Cemetery (G5 0TA) at 12:00 on Saturday 28 February.  After a graveside blessing, there will be a Q&A with Jim Craig, Tom Boyd and Pat McCluskey, at The Curling Stone pub, High Craigends, Kilsyth.  If you can make it along and support the great work of the Society, get there.

i have to sit in my work all day and listen to all these cringeworthy corporate phrases, and that is by far the worst of them

it has ruined my life, im now just a stressed out reclusive shell with the mental torture that has been inflicted on me by these phrases

my wife and dog have left me, and i have turned to drinking cans of super lager for breakfast just to get me through the day

    thanks

Beautiful start to the day down here. Cumbrae is basking in glorious sunshine (for the moment). The water is pondlike after yesterday’s wildness.

Can’t be too beautiful down Govan way. What next after Easdale?

  4. I can’t believe this story hasn’t received more media coverage as the decision to pass a £6b NHS budget to the control of the Mayor of Manchester is astounding.

It is a craven admission by this government that it’s strategy for community social care was shambolicly underfunded and it also signals their flagship policy of GP fund holders was misguided at best or a deliberate attempt to fragment and de-stablise the NHS at worst, you choose.

If indeed Sevco are let off the hook for events last Friday, as is now expected, because the club did all they could to stop such singing – can the SPFL be forced to explain what in fact the club actually did?

I was thinking the exact same last night, wasn’t in the slightest interested who would win but found myself hoping for a City injury time equaliser, the English pressers latched onto Joe Hart saving keeping it a one goal deficit, all the Bhoys heading to Milan hope u hav a great couple of days

  9. For all those wondering where the SPFL goes from here with regard to dealing with sectarian singing, surely it is well past time that our Justice Minister intervened, as those singing are breaking the law of the land. Mind you, the previous incumbent didn’t seem to think so as he praised them to the rafters.

  10. The Rangers will never be punished while Campbell is on watch. I think it’s really that simple.

I think it’s obvious to all that the Police can’t go wading in and arrest thousands at a game. That’s totally impracticable for a number of reasons.

What the can do is refuse to police a stand, or the entire ground at the next home game. If the SPFL are going to abdicate their responsibility to the police in these matters then that’s the route that needs to be taken.

  15. weeminger

I know what you’re saying but we’re continually told by the authorities that those singing the racist/sectarian songs are a ‘minority’.

If that’s the case, identify them and hold them to account either at the match or afterwards.

Without getting all pedantic about it even if it was as little as 1000 in a crowd of 50,000 and it’s usually a lot more. It would be too many for effective action to be taken.

The refusal to police at the next game is the only workable police based punishment I can see.

It shouldn’t be in their hands in the first place though.

So I finally manage to find my way to CQN Corner last Sunday only to discover I have just missed you. I hope we can rectify that on Sunday next.

    Hail Hail.

  18. SNP’s Police Scotland manage to photo/kettle and/or arrest Celtic supporters for singing, what’s the problem “evening up” the stats?…………Or have they been “lost” again?

What’s the government response? Salmond was right in there after the ‘shame game’, where’s he hiding after more ‘shame games’. Guess what, there’s no votes in this?

  19. It would be easy enough for the police to stop the sectarian singing . They pull out a few while filming the rest. Theyre not shy about going into the crowd to grab Celtic fans. It appears there is no will in the police to go after them. Failiure to stop them helps create yet more generations of bigots who think that violence against others is ok.

  20. Weeminger @ 09:08,

“It shouldn’t be in their hands in the first place though.

This is an interesting point, it always intrigued me why the Scottish Football Clubs were so docile in letting the OBaF through, even Paul McBride was in favour.

It appears the act all but nullifies Clubs from responsibility for the offensive behaviour of fans. After completing, what seems to be an opaque tick box requirements exercise, they simply can sit back and leave it to the authorities to deal with.

Of course without the Media to hold Clubs to account as there is in England, they don’t even need to pay lip service for the sake of PR.

    Dreadful state of affairs really.

Well more trouble at the Rangers as Easdale walks away on thing I admire about the bloke if what he says is true he hasnt taken a penny from the club for his time and effort it marks him out as different from the others.I wonder where they go from here I am begining to think King might just win control of the club but if he is allowed to become a director that will just be another rule broken in this sorry saga. H.H.

  22. With the constant repetitive anti board, anti yes, sectarian paranoia posts from Kev,Alfie, Bawsman,Neganon and the like this site is becoming less relevant every day which is a pity because its my Celtic site of choice.I find I spend less and less time reading these days and virtually never post, there are so many that I scroll past I’m actually getting some work done.Which is good!

I get my Celtic fixes these days discussing the team and the issues with mates whilst actually going to games, what a novelty!!!

Fella Thursday night is a huge ask for Celtic I feel we are long overdue a result in the San Siro but although I feel Rony is the man to make us a more competitive side in Europe I feel this is to early in his reign.I think in another eighteen months or so we will be a completely different kettle of fish as Rony will have had more time to work on the team. However I live in hope. Utterly pathetic statements trying to lay the blame to all that is bad in Scotland on the SNP.

I left school in 1975 to work for the Glasgow Corporation. Of 32 departments, the number of RC directors was…….zero. Highest Catholic was a deputy in the Finance Department. Almost all of the Councillors were Labour, and had been for decades. Why did they allow this?

Discrimination was rife in the heavy industries, legal profession, police, Glasgow Corpie, Rangers, etc. etc. WTF did the labour party do?

Allowed the OO to have over 200 walks every year in Glasgow for one thing.

The SNP ain’t perfect, but don’t get me started on what the Labour Party (not movement) has done to combat sectarianism in the past (and present)
