Doncaster wriggling with rules

846

SPFL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, is clear on the subject of offensive singing at football games: “It remains the SPFL’s position that if it can be established that clubs have done everything required in overall management of the event pre-match, during the game and post-match then they have no case to answer”.

This may be the case, but if clubs fail to communicate appropriate instructions to fans after one transgression, which is quickly followed by a second transgression, Doncaster’s defence is moot.  The club has failed to do “everything required” pre-match and post-match, and is guilty under the rules, if applied.

Doncaster has employed a rhetorical technique.  When faced with a difficult scenario, make a statement which is in itself true, but the parameters of which do not match the scenario.

The chief executive of the Scottish Professional Football League’s comments this morning appear like an attempt to protect a member club from the League’s own rules.  He is paid to ensure rules are applied, not negated.

It is no business of his to defer responsibility to the police, or the Justice Ministry, which concocted this inept Offensive Behaviour Act in order to “equalise” criminality, where it didn’t exist, but will not lift a finger on this issue.

What do you know about Andy McAtee?  He signed for Celtic from Mossend Hibs in 1910 and left in 1924, having played 438 games on the right wing, scoring 75 goals.  He won six league titles and four Scottish Cups and was one of the earliest Celtic heroes.  During the Great War he fought in the Alps, and in Haig’s bloody field in the Somme.

When he, and other members of our first genuinely great team, retired, Celtic found it impossible to replace them.  We didn’t win another six titles until Inter manager, Helenio Herrera, watched our title win in May 1967.

The Celtic Graves Society mark his final resting place at Kilsyth Cemetery (G5 0TA) at 12:00 on Saturday 28 February.  After a graveside blessing, there will be a Q&A with Jim Craig, Tom Boyd and Pat McCluskey, at The Curling Stone pub, High Craigends, Kilsyth.  If you can make it along and support the great work of the Society, get there.

  1. Message left on the Superscore Board answer machine this morning:

“Hugh, are you there? It’s Billy fae Fullerton Park in Tollcross. I had to phone you after what I saw on that telly last night Hugh. By the way, well done for pulling that other mob up for their flag and anthem last week. (I’m leaving a message, wee Hugh’s no there, shut that prisoner up would ye). Last night Hugh I was watching a documentary about leopards on BBC2 between 8 and 9. Magic it was Hugh up to a point. There they were dominating the grasslands: hunting, gorging, lying about and sha***** sorry Hugh mating when they wanted, well for the first fifty minutes, then they bloody Zebras started. Everything is black and white wi they zebras they’re the tarriers of the animal kingdom-nae offence Hugh you aren’t a bad yin. Anyhow they started fighting back and wouldn’t give up one of their young. Two of them chased a leopard away. Shocking it’s not the natural order Hugh.

But that’s not my main point. I turned it over to the fitba Hugh at 9, in all honesty I was avoiding it. I know we are on a ‘journey’ but there’s not much duty free in Brechin and Cowdenbeath, git whit I’m saying. I mean I’ve not peed on a statue or puked in a fountain for years now. I’m missing it to be honest Hugh. Well I thought I was safe watching Man. City we’ve got a wee link wi them now cos they’re loaded and should win a lot. Whit’s the first thing I see Hugh? A tricolour. A tricolour in the City end. I couldn’t believe it. It’s bad enough up here but at Man. City. Whit have they go to do with Ireland? It’s like Hibs, they brought one tae Ibrox and they’re fae Edinburgh. They had a Ryan Air flag as well but it was green and gold. Outrageous Hugh. Whit would Irish fans be doing at City Hugh? I think it was some tarriers on their way to Milan and buying tickets at City just to annoy us.

This nearly put me off my heid last night. They are everywhere. My blood pressure was rocketing so I phoned my Doctor this morning. Dr Nevin. Turns out he’s aff sick, his receptionist saying he’s hearing voices in his head and his back-bone’s went. Whit’s the world coming to?

Anyhow Hugh, listen raise this for me will ye. I know you’re not on till Friday but I’ll listen to the podcast. I’m on duty at Falkirk on Friday. We’re running a bus fae Pitt Street. Plain clothes in the Rangers end. Aw the best Hugh. Keep up the good work.”

  4. Wondering on the timing of the Easdale withdrawal – with the wages are due on Friday 27th, if the second tranche of the £10m from Ashley has not been drawn down, perhaps we are looking at an insolvency event this week prior to the EGM.

Question – why would Ashley ‘nurse-maid’ Sevco for so long with his loans etc, just to meekly walk away if King’s coalition win the share vote?

It just does not make sense – I believe there will be one more twist.

King said he would challenge all the deals set up with Ashley – if a court allows the challenge, all the deals could effectively be frozen until a decision is reached – will Ashley allow this?

The silence from Lambias, Leach and Ashley is deafening – what is cooking?

  9. Weeminger @ 10:47,

Wouldn’t disagree with that at all.

However while Clubs refuse to have strict liability and Offensive Behaviour at Football is a criminal act that the authorities are responsible for. The Clubs will make generalised statements follow their set out obligations and leave it at that.

Look at the statement issued from Ibrox on Tuesday….

“The club’s position on anti-social behaviour is abundantly clear. The club is committed to eradicating all forms of inappropriate behaviour and continues to work tirelessly via the club’s Follow with Pride campaign, and supports all initiatives aimed at tackling this problem.”

Nothing of substance, nothing dealing with the specific issues raised, no threats of suspensions or any action to deal with offending individuals. In essence nothing.

Neither the footballing, enforcement nor government authorities oblige them to do anything over and above the few requirements they must currently observe.

The media won’t hold them to account.

So not only can the bigots continue with what is in effect impunity by numbers as witnessed at the LCSF, they can actually start pushing it to see how far they can go as at Raith.

We’re on the same page I think. That’s why I suggested that if the SFA/SPFL are going to force the Police’s hand on this they refuse to police a stand or the entire ground. Leading to a full or partially closed doors game.

  15. I wonder if Mr Doncaster likes being a puppet for the SFA.

In my opinion the SFA under the stewardship of Campbell Ogilvie are using him as a puppet to spout their TRIFC rhetoric, and take the flack. If this man would have had any self esteem at all he would have told them to shove it,and told the truth, instead he does their dirty work for them, and looks a useless specimen of a human being.
