Doncaster wriggling with rules

846

SPFL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, is clear on the subject of offensive singing at football games: “It remains the SPFL’s position that if it can be established that clubs have done everything required in overall management of the event pre-match, during the game and post-match then they have no case to answer”.

This may be the case, but if clubs fail to communicate appropriate instructions to fans after one transgression, which is quickly followed by a second transgression, Doncaster’s defence is moot.  The club has failed to do “everything required” pre-match and post-match, and is guilty under the rules, if applied.

Doncaster has employed a rhetorical technique.  When faced with a difficult scenario, make a statement which is in itself true, but the parameters of which do not match the scenario.

The chief executive of the Scottish Professional Football League’s comments this morning appear like an attempt to protect a member club from the League’s own rules.  He is paid to ensure rules are applied, not negated.

It is no business of his to defer responsibility to the police, or the Justice Ministry, which concocted this inept Offensive Behaviour Act in order to “equalise” criminality, where it didn’t exist, but will not lift a finger on this issue.

What do you know about Andy McAtee?  He signed for Celtic from Mossend Hibs in 1910 and left in 1924, having played 438 games on the right wing, scoring 75 goals.  He won six league titles and four Scottish Cups and was one of the earliest Celtic heroes.  During the Great War he fought in the Alps, and in Haig’s bloody field in the Somme.

When he, and other members of our first genuinely great team, retired, Celtic found it impossible to replace them.  We didn’t win another six titles until Inter manager, Helenio Herrera, watched our title win in May 1967.

The Celtic Graves Society mark his final resting place at Kilsyth Cemetery (G5 0TA) at 12:00 on Saturday 28 February.  After a graveside blessing, there will be a Q&A with Jim Craig, Tom Boyd and Pat McCluskey, at The Curling Stone pub, High Craigends, Kilsyth.  If you can make it along and support the great work of the Society, get there.

    Mike,

ND and PL were in the same room during the TV negotiations which benefitted the huns. Possibly 5 way agreement discussions etc. So he has enough on him but Petes the boss. I agree. Doncaster is too stupid to run Scottish football. Doncaster is the go between for Campbell and Ogilvie I reckon.

I tend to think we have stayed silent on too much since the summer of 2012 and the silence will lead to assumptions that Celtic’s board have been been happy with what has been going on. Big assumptions of course but understandable.

The constant bigotted singing which emanated from the Rangers support at the semi final and the anodyne reaction to it from the authorities equating a banner that was quite funny to 90 minutes of aural filth should have brought a reaction from Celtic but did not – or I missed it.

I am not as negative about our board as you are but I have consistently felt PL and co have not been as clearing in stating our position on just about everything pertaining to Rangers and ‘Rangers’ since 2012.

That the civil authorities will do nothing about this disgrace, nothing to apprehend the bigots is though not Celtic’s fault.

Am away to make my tea.

    How are you my friend.

    He did mention St.Julies.

It was just that he mentioned that he watched the 1967 cup final and then he went with friends to Billy McNeils house after the game.If I am correct he would have been 5 and a half.

It might be true but?(not slating him whatsoever by the way,tv story maybe?.

  4. If only the mega rich Man City had remembered to send Yaya a Birthday card, he wouldn’t have got suspended and they would have beaten Barcelona.

Celtic – Just beat Inter Milan with revitalising Fitba with loads of Passion.

  5. Jimbo67,

I have a different view. Let them sing their songs of hate and remain stuck in a one dimensional sectarian dead end. It will be ever decreasing circles and the song will eventually where are the people. As Scotland as a society progresses they will be the White Trash similar to the KKK which they have so much in common with. The lack of club leadership and the whataboutery of the media helps this.

Anyways enough of thems. Taking a wee jaunt to Milan tomorrow with my 2 sons and as long as every Celtic player gives 100% and helps out his teammates that will do me. Anything else is a bonus.

  6. I know it’s late, but I was waiting for 4 tickets for tomorrow nights game, which failed to appear.

Last time I was in San Siro we bought tickets in the bank in Milan, but they were for the home end.

Does anyone know if tickets for the Celtic end are available in Milan ?

  11. If you hand them a token punishment…

Then their spread of hatred multiplies…

    Points deduction?

    Closed stands ?

    Pointless sanctions …..

Jailing naming and shaming those singing and promoting hatred and division on an individual basis far more productive.

As is the Luke’s of media outlets around the world… Such as collymore highlighting the dirty secret of this country for all to see ….

Let the world frown upon such racism and hatred that those guilty frown upon hypocritically at others from different cultures.

Racial and religious intolerance regardless of severity is disgusting .

Open the eyes of the world and let them see what still happens in 2015

A mate of mine told me that after the Lisbon game, wee Raymie Houghton (pronounced Hawton) five, ran on to the road (Arnprior).

A lorry carrying loads of celebrating fans screeched to a halt, as the boy nearly ended up underneath it.

Jimmy stayed a few closes from him and recalls it vividly.

Billy McNeill lived in Simshill which was 500 yards away and across a busy road, so a bit much for a boy that age, unless older people took him.

I have a soft spot for Brentford and have watched them a bit this season but unfortunately didn’t get along this evening. I would have thought that the last team to have 42 attempts at goal in a game was Celtic in Lisbon.

Hope to god that Mark Warburton doesn’t end up anywhere near the Huns.

I like the Brentford centre half Tarkowski – Celtic could do a lot worse than him when VVD moves on.
