Doncaster wriggling with rules

846

SPFL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, is clear on the subject of offensive singing at football games: “It remains the SPFL’s position that if it can be established that clubs have done everything required in overall management of the event pre-match, during the game and post-match then they have no case to answer”.

This may be the case, but if clubs fail to communicate appropriate instructions to fans after one transgression, which is quickly followed by a second transgression, Doncaster’s defence is moot.  The club has failed to do “everything required” pre-match and post-match, and is guilty under the rules, if applied.

Doncaster has employed a rhetorical technique.  When faced with a difficult scenario, make a statement which is in itself true, but the parameters of which do not match the scenario.

The chief executive of the Scottish Professional Football League’s comments this morning appear like an attempt to protect a member club from the League’s own rules.  He is paid to ensure rules are applied, not negated.

It is no business of his to defer responsibility to the police, or the Justice Ministry, which concocted this inept Offensive Behaviour Act in order to “equalise” criminality, where it didn’t exist, but will not lift a finger on this issue.

What do you know about Andy McAtee?  He signed for Celtic from Mossend Hibs in 1910 and left in 1924, having played 438 games on the right wing, scoring 75 goals.  He won six league titles and four Scottish Cups and was one of the earliest Celtic heroes.  During the Great War he fought in the Alps, and in Haig’s bloody field in the Somme.

When he, and other members of our first genuinely great team, retired, Celtic found it impossible to replace them.  We didn’t win another six titles until Inter manager, Helenio Herrera, watched our title win in May 1967.

The Celtic Graves Society mark his final resting place at Kilsyth Cemetery (G5 0TA) at 12:00 on Saturday 28 February.  After a graveside blessing, there will be a Q&A with Jim Craig, Tom Boyd and Pat McCluskey, at The Curling Stone pub, High Craigends, Kilsyth.  If you can make it along and support the great work of the Society, get there.

tonydonnelly67. Nice to see you on line again fella.I thought Ashley would be debarred from being on the Rangers board due to the two club rule. However, I will no doubt be proved wrong as there are no rules that apply to them. H.H.

  5. Sky Sports just showed our pumping of the Huns. I forgot about the contorted face on Barry Fergusons coupon when he chopped down Stan Petrov. Ah, good times.

‘Crowd disturbances’. Entirely the cause of the police wading through the Celtic support in a totally inappropriate manner. I was there and there was no trouble. A flare had been lit well before the police moved in but by the time the police moved in everybody was watching the game and trying to stay warm.

Spot on mate.I left high school in the early 80’s in ML2,there were still many places in those days that we all knew that applying for a job was a pointless exercise.Thankfully for my sons who are now late teens/Early 20’s there is a much different experience.

Things have changed for the better so much in this country, the group of guys I go to games with all are well educated and have pretty senior jobs,we are living proof that sectarianism in on the wain in Scotland.Long may it continue lets be part of the solution.

  8. I hope there are no flares tomorrow night , the next sanction , possible banning of support from next away game would be awful for both the team and the law abiding fans(imo)

  9. Away games are becoming a bit of a nightmare for Celtic in Europe at the moment. When will these idiots learn that flares are severely frowned upon in UEFA games. They are not needed. They cause the local police, and we know what they are like,to get involved which kicks off a rumpus.

Idiocy of the highest level.Should be banned for life getting Euro games tickets. We are very lucky it was only £7,500.Could have been a lot more.

  10. “Inappropriate behaviour” by travelling Celtic support. . Club punished.

Criminal behaviour by travelling Sevco support. . Club not punished.

The calling out (sorry FL) of said criminal behaviour. . . punished (Stan Collymore).

Urine extraction by the authorities continues.

  11. jimbo67,

The flare alone would have brought the fine.No use sticking your head in the sand.We have idiots that act like 10 year olds on away trips.Numpties.If they get the away fans banned would you be happy?.

Totally different bodies in charge. We all know UEFA rules.Stick to them.We know what the SMSM are like.Calling for action on any singing in Scotland would backfire on us.

Remember it was UEFA that banned the BBs.

    Agree.

My personal feelings are not offended by anti catholic/ sectarian singing by a group of unhappy, bitter and discredited Rangers supporters so I’m not going to feign outrage.

I wouldn’t say I find it laughable but I do find it cringeworthy and very old fashioned. It’s a sad thing to see a group of people clinging on to something that is so obviously slipping away in to history.

Something’s are best left to wither on the vine. I’m approaching 48. I have never been held back educationally professionally or otherwise by my association with Celtic. I am like the vast majority of the population ostensibly secular so no religious association to consider personally but I don’t see Catholics in my workplace being discriminated against.

I wonder that by drawing attention to it we are supplying oxygen.

In my view the problem is more overt in Rangers support but it is not absent in the Celtic support but within both sets of fans it is a decreasing minority.

  14. I couldent give a Fack about what SEVCO fans do, not our problem, it’s what our fans get up to I give a Fack about, we are under a microscope right now after what thems got up to, it’s best we be on our toes and don’t shoot our selves in the foot, or they will be all over us like a rash.

Whatabouterie is over at the South West of the city, let’s leave it there and the only way to do that is, use the heed.

  15. Turkeybhoy

    Agree with your comments entirely.

Idiots on our side will never learn regarding these flares.

I don’t expect any different for tonight’s game but we can only hope they take heed of the latest fine handed out to our great club.HH

  16. Turkeybhoy

I agree that the flare might well have led to a fine but in this instance the report says ‘crowd disturbances’ . It does not say ‘setting off fireworks’ as it does in the Steaua match report. The crowd disturbances were entirely the cause of the police and happened well after the solitary flare was lit.

From my reading of this blog alone,it would appear that essentially the same people go to all the ‘away’ ties. It would seem reasonably possible to educate those who need it that some things cannot happen at UEFA games.Keep doing the same things always results in the same answer! BMCUWP/nae done so name talk:-)

Thanks for your reply , so are the club fighting these charges or just accepting whatever is flung at them by UEFA ?

    turkeybhoy

    The charge was ‘Crowd disturbances’

Flares or fireworks would have been mentioned in the charges , so my second example from UEFA site .

Are we as a club challenging these accusations or just accepting UEFA’s word or interpretation ?

  19. Turkeybhoy

Whoever’s responsible for ‘policing’ this, it’s a disgrace that criminal behaviour goes unpunished, while inappropriate behaviour is dealt with.

It’s also a disgrace for the SNP to call a summit over ‘handbags’ on the touch line, and indiscipline on the pitch by one club, and ignore criminal sectarian and racist chanting by thousands, whatever rules the football authority in charge may have.

Sorry, said ‘ignore’. Forgot the justice minister of the time had praised the atmosphere it produced.

    Sorry was in a meeting.

My potted view – where it’s clearly a minority and by that I mean a few individuals – it’s a police issue whether by the flawed OBA or by the perfectly adequate ‘old’ laws.

Where that minority numbers the hundreds or thousands it becomes an issue for the club rather than the individuals and on that basis the football governing body should be taking action.

If,as we are continually told, the Rangers fans doing all the illegal singing and chanting are only a very small minority, surely the answer is obvious.

Remove their megaphones on the way into the ground, cos they’re a helluva noisy minority!

So ‘on the wane’ that the SNP brought in the OBaF act to ‘even up’ the figures on sectarian arrests at football matches.

So ‘on the wane’ that figures on sectarian violence requested by the Catholic church back in 2006 were finally declared to be ‘lost’ in 2011.

I’ve no doubt things have improved in the field of employment for example, mate, but you paint far too rosy a picture of Scotland’s ‘dirty little secret’, which has been exposed somewhat by Stan Collymore this past week.
