Dysfunctional Amsterdam

770

Three weeks ago there was little argument against the observation that Ajax had the worst European travelling support we have seen at Celtic Park – half a century of history.  Attacks on Celtic fans by a roaming gang on Tuesday night was not a surprise.  The banner, which Uefa are trying to ignore, but will surely be shamed into doing something about, was offensive and, in most jurisdictions, a criminal offense.

When the police collaborate it’s hard not to verge into the realms of branding a society “dysfunctional”.  Amsterdam is wealthy, affluent, liberal but intolerant, badly policed and violent.  The visit of Celtic fans passed with less incident (and arrest of visitors) than most visiting fans endured in recent seasons.

Visit Bruges instead.

  13. I spent a couple of hours talking to Ramie on the phone this afternoon. One day I’ll figure out why I feel so humbled after talking to him. Somehow I’m always left wondering if I really do measure up.

He reminded me that the 4th of November, just past, was the 5th anniversary of Kano falling ill. I didn’t need reminding but Ramie lived every day of those past five years the hard way, the good way, quietly looking after his mate who was no longer as fortunate as us who can walk and talk and brush our own teeth.

He was telling me how Kano was just back from a wee holiday spent in Kalbarri, Western Australia. He said the man came home to Perth, all tanned, and with a renewed passion for life. The doctors didn’t think Kano would see five years. The doctors are no mugs; they are clever. They have been well educated. They are dedicated. They know how to manage expectations. They know untold thousands of patients who have a will to live and a heart to fuel the will. Rarely do they get to know the likes of Kano. Kano is making more than one doctor re-evaluate expectations.

Kano is now into the unknown and he’s doing it with a class, and a dignity, that defies definition; but Kano couldn’t care, he’s on his road.

Kano is good, his birthday comes around again of the 15th of December, an anniversary worth an e-mail or a card. You fly the flag… the man is still alive and his heart beats for company; that’s Kano.

I hope my kids are befriended by guardian angels from the same family that protect Kano. Or is it Kano who is protecting the angels?

It was not only Ramie who humbled me today, the Perth Rangers Supporters Club, and the Perth Aberdeen Supporters Club, took Martin on holiday and not a drop of water or a single cent was for want.

BMCUW has already given you the traditional spiel from a moonhowlers perspective.

Inquest over for the present, although definitely not forgotten ( Over to the more legally astute and hopefully our authorities ). Final word on Amsterdam today :- If we do not pursue and expose the Dutch over their “policing” then history will reflect that it was indeed a “Day of shame” as far as our support is concerned. Our club, our supporters and our hard won reputation demand no less.

I hope NFL will not just freshen up the team today but be completely bold. We know our top side when available, but let us see what we have got outwith that and I would ask our supporters to be patient if indeed he goes down this route.

Proud and privileged to be a Celtic fan. Never forgotten who we are and where we have come from.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

  20. McDowellcelt god bless wee oscar on

My heads only gettin back to normal after my trip to Amsterdam so haven’t read back. What a mad few days that was!lol..

If we don’t push the boat out an sign at least 2 quality players on decent wages who will walk straight into the team then for me our team will break up an players will leave. Another rebuilding job in the summer then play roulette with our champions league qualifiers again. Don’t buy into this rubbish Lenny and lawell keep saying about it will disrupt squad if players come in on big wages.. Look at the impact ozil has had at arsenal he has gave the club and team a massive lift.

Nobody wants to see us sign prima donnas who are just after money. Just players who have that extra quality who improve the team.

I think our current team have gone stale and backwards and barring the immense van dijk our summer signings have been a disaster.

Were facing the prospect of losing ledley, Forster, sammi, possibly Matthews and van dijk as other clubs will be sniffing round them.

We need to send out a message that were intent on improving team not breakin it up.

Bit of a rant for so early but we are being short changed to a massive degree. The money we have made in the last few years and the players we have brought in has shown a serious lack of ambition.

Rant over onwards to Ross county 2day. Time to freshen team up and see what rogic, biton, atajic can do.

  21. Ramie have a good un.

I have not been to Lourdes for years, but for those who have never been I can honestly say it is the one place I have been on this earth where each and every day– every hour in fact– you get to see first hand MAN’S HUMANITY TO MAN>

Nothing to do with religious belief, Bernadette Soubirous, The Immaculate Conception, Miracles, Catholicism and all that– although all of that is there if you want to participate— just the sheer goodwill of volunteers who give up their time to help the sick and the infirm and the handicapped.

If you look beyond the endless shops selling plastic virgins, medals, water bottles and likes you just see good people looking after others — and having a good time doing it despite the hard work involved.

I would encourage everyone to go to Lourdes to have a look– and the countryside around the town is stunning.

    Please support this appeal.

Beyond that best of luck to Celtic today– we need a win to get us back on track and a big performance from some of our fringe players.

I was taken to Lourdes by HCPT in 1970 by the Parish Ilived in then. I can still remember it like yesterday. Torchlight processions, Masses in the Basilica, underground Basilica, tours of Bernadettes’ homes, visits to the Grotto and being bathed in Lourdes Water. Although I am from Lanarkshire we left from Tollcross, can’t reember the Parish but remember Nuns having something to do with the place. We were all given a medal to mark our trip, it has a yellow and white ribbon, best way to describe it it is like a medal presented to Soldiers, a bad analogy. I still have the medal to this day, 43 years later

There is a statue to Our Lady at the foot of the walkway to the Basilica, it is said if you go there and say a prayer you will return. Although I have not returned yet, I was offered a place by my Parish in the mid 70s, I refused the place as I had already been and wanted my place to go to somebody more deserving.

I have supported the cause, got first team, Aberdeen, which probably means I have no chance of winning but do I care, no way, I have already won. Although the print would be nice as I sat with a friend in the main stand the night that Naka goal was scored, sadly that friend is no longer with us, will explain why that moment is so dear to me another time.

    Keep the Faith!
