Edouard pushed out Celtic transfer record

911

Celtic have activated a clause in their loan deal for Odsonne Edouard (20) with Paris Saint-Germain to sign the player on a four-year permanent contract.  The deal will cost the club an initial £4.5m but the add-ons which follow will soon make the deal the club’s highest transfer fee paid.

To give some perspective, Celtic last broke their transfer fee record with the £6m purchase of Neil Lennon in 2000.

Watching Odsonne develop during his loan period has been an education.  Brendan Rodgers put Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths on the bench to allow Odsonne the game time he needed to grow.  His early-season rustiness was history by March, when he came off the bench when Celtic were down to 10 men at Ibrox, brushed aside what defences there was, to score a memorable winner.

The last player to match our record transfer fee was John Hartson in 2001.  Like John then, Odsonne is third choice striker, so the work does not stop here.

Great business, well done all concerned.

  1. I recall when Fergus tried to spin that, we’d signed Alan Stubbs for £5 million, the spin was dropped when Gerry McNee asked Fergus if, Celtic were the only club who paid wages ?

First time poster here, delighted we’ve got French Eddie on a permanent deal, the Bhoy has real pace, power and an eye for goal. Plus, he’s young and said he’s keen to develop under BR which I believe found perhaps entice other young talents to Celtic Park. Hail Hail ???

Dumbarton have a Celtic daft left back by the name of McLaughlin. I took him to his first Celtic match when he was 5 year old. He is more two footed than KT, but a year older. I would sign my nephew as back up to KT if I was Brendan. ??

OK, who dumped a job lot of cheap vuvuzelas in St Petersburg? Or have they been invaded by a an army of West Highland Way midgies?

Anyway….couple of wee unconnected observations the first of which irritates me more than Vuvumidgies…..

1, We don’t call ‘Real Sociedad’, ‘Royal Society’. We would never say that it’s ‘Dusseldorf Fortune’ and not ‘Fortuna Dusseldorf’? How about ‘Madrid Athletic’ instead of ‘Atletico Madrid’ or ‘Royal King Charles of Spain (the second) Sporting Club’ instead of ‘RSC Charleroi’, ‘Milan International’ instead of ‘Internazionale Milan’, ‘Rome’ and not ‘Roma’….oh there’s so many….

So why do commentators, pundits, reporters and fans insist on saying ‘Red Star Belgrade’ and not ‘Crvena Zvezda’?

    2. I’ve just received a reminder from the GWEC (Global Wind Energy Council) thatJune the 15th, today, is Global Wind Day. Nowadays people seem to celebrate the most ridiculous things like cooking a meal on telly, having a wean/getting married if you’re from windsor or electing Merkin Muffley as president of the USA and in charge of a big button, yet we don’t celebrate something that is so natural and beneficial to humanity’s progress.

To right this calumny I suggest that we all (I’ve also mailed all members of the extended Matt Stewart family especially my environmentally conscious sisters with this), at 6pm precisely stop whatever we are all doing, mammys and dads, sons and daughters, vicars and tarts, get up aff the couch, throw the windows open and let one rip..

This celebration could also be regarded as a deafening response to those feckin vuvuzelas and a trumpet blast in honour of the first commentator to say ‘Crvena Zvezda’.

June the 15th will never be the same again.

Off to eat some chilli beans in preparation.

    Hail Hail

    Matt

    Gene,

Over the last couple of seasons I solved the TV commentary problem (by accident, as all great discoveries have been).

Till then, when I had to watch TV football and been subjected to, in particular English sports commentators and pundits and their belief that they have a god given right to emerge victorious, parodying the Jonathan Aitken Mantra with their “simple sword of truth and the trusty shield of English’ fair play, any empathy I may have had would vanish and I would hit the Craig Burley/Pat Nevin Button – The mute

(I also had an Andy Gray button on my remote – it directed a Taser beam at any relevant gobsh*te ).

Then one evening I listened via headphones and found that if I only half inserted the audio jack, then the transmission of the crowd/atmosphere was unaffected but miracle of miracles the frequency for the commentry box was blocked.

Doesn’t help today mind you wae this mad attack of droning tinnitus.

    Hail Hail

    Matt

  23. GENE:

    No information on RB.

And I hear the Club feel with Edouard and Ntcham on long term deals it would be prudent to make it a hat-trick with new deal for Moussa. From what I hear Moussa has not dismissed the idea…:)

    Haircut time…

    Until we meet again…
