Efe the enigma, when our heroes get ill

480

The challenge Efe Ambrose will face should he proposed move to Hibs go through will be considerably less taxing that what he faced in the Premiership, or in Europe, with Celtic. Efe will go down in folklore as another African Cup of Nations enigma.

He was part of the heroic story against Barcelona in November 2012, before heading to the African Cup of Nations two months later. That tournament would see the player achieve the peak of his continent’s football Kilimanjaro. He played right back for champions, Nigeria.

That was on the Sunday. By the Tuesday he had been flown across the globe and made the starting line-up for Celtic in their Champions League last 16 game against Juventus. Two minutes into the game Efe was caught underneath the ball and out of position, Juventus exploited the lapse to the full.

As far as Efe’s time at the top goes, that was that. Since then his form has been on a pronounced downwards trajectory. The thing is, he’s still only 28. There was a player of considerable value in there one. If someone can bring focus to him, there may be again.

A word on matters relating to illness and medical information of our heroes…………

Pretty much everyone knew of Billy McNeill’s condition for some time but thankfully, it wasn’t subject to online speculation. There are a few guidelines on health matters which are worth observing:

Health is a private matter and should not be discussed online unless and until the person or family decide otherwise.

While we feel close to our heroes and will naturally want to offer support at a time of need, serious illness is the most private of matters, it is wholly inappropriate for a former footballer to hear his condition is a matter of public knowledge.

A bereavement should only be ‘revealed’ online by someone acting on the explicit instructions of the family. The unofficial release of this type of news is a very regretful manifestation of the internet age.

In recent years, we have seen many occasions of older celebrities’ deaths being incorrectly reported, then retweeted and retold thousands of times before it is denied. For an ill person and their family this can be a horrific experience.

The world can do without our condolences for a couple of hours until the family concerned have been able to contact all members.

These guidelines are scrupulously followed by the mainstream media in Scotland, who will hear of a footballer’s bereavement but hold the news – and prepare their reaction – until the family are ready.

For former-Celtic players, the club will usually be in touch with the family and release the news at the appropriate time. If you want to express your condolences, prepare your thoughts but hold until an official announcement.

If you don’t do Facebook, how do you know when your ‘friends’ are needing attention or if they’ve been at the gym or not? ;)

From earlier , you asked about West London CSC. My Lhad would know more about their tickets, they don’t run a bus to Celtic Park I do know that for a fact. They have a few season tickets which are allocated ,I think , to members. Pop into The Horse Gaurdsman and ask any of the regulars for more details or their Twitter account, just search #westlondoncsc and you will find it. Cheers

  3. Something happened last year that summed social media up. Terror attacks in Paris, folks were changing the background of their profile photos to the French flag. Terror attacks in Belgium, Turkey and all over the world and they don’t do likewise. It was pure vanity and the fact that the French flag and Paris were seen as ‘trendy’.

  4. Speaking of Lenten feasts, I have been in Cologne a couple of times when the carnevale is on…proper party as the city feasts well before starting their Lent fasting.

Myself ? I will be abstaining from beer, cider and wine in fact all alcohol for the period. Tonight Matthew I will be consuming the remaining cans of cider from the fridge before the fast commences. HH

MIT, never had a good experience in LAX; always busy and problematic.

    Worst experience however was Toronto!

About 10 years ago I was making my way to Waterloo for my nephews wedding. My brother, his wife and son were meeting us at the airport; there were around a dozen of us including me, my wife and my grandson (coming up 5). I’d upgraded the 3 of us to First Class so it was a great flight.

So we all got off the plane and went through to the immigration desks. As we hand the passports to the lady (all the same surname) she says to my grandson “are you looking forward to a holiday with your mum and dad?”. He replies “that’s not my mum and dad.” Silence. She then asks who we are. so I explain we are his grandparents and we are over for a family wedding. As I look around, all other members of my family are out of the immigration hall.

She then asks if we have a letter of permission from his parents; nope, don’t have one. She then asks the wee man if he sees us often. “Not very often” he says. At this point I should add that we have had him every weekend and every Wednesday overnight since he was born. I explain this to the lady and he adds “well that’s not often. There are a lot of days I don’t see you.”

So she then advises us she is going to ask him some questions and we should keep quite. It then gets even worse.

Her: “What did you get for their wedding present?”

    Him: “Nothing.”

I’m not able to explain there is a Wedding List at the local Walmart.

Her: “Who are you going to see?”

    Him: “Uncle John.”

    Her: “Where is he from?”

    Him: “Scotland.”

I’m not able to explain he immigrated a number of years ago.

Her: “What else are you going to do?”

Him: “I have 2 Inuit friends Moo and Toona; we’re going to visit them as well.”

Moo and Toona are 2 imaginary friends he has; she proceeds to ask him all about them and he provides a very detailed explanation of Inuits, their customs and how he met them! She buys the whole story!

So she the decides she believes us and says she will speak to his parents by telephone to verify all is OK.

After a number of calls to track down one of his parents she has a long detailed conversation with my son and decides all is OK. This has taken an hour in total he’s digging the Moo and Toona story even deeper as she converses with him and I’m in areal quandary. Do I tell her it’s made up or let it ride? I let it ride.

Eventually she stamps the passports and let’s us through. I’m glad I’m wearing a jacket because I’ve sweated so much my shirt is sticking to my back!

We get out to the baggage hall and our bags are doing a lonely dance around the carousel; we collect the bags and go out to get the rest of the family wondering if they are still there; fortunately they are, thinking I’ve done something dodgy! They were giving it a bit of time because my sister had seen them quizzing us.

What an experience! I can laugh now.

    Lost for words these past days after hearing confirmation that our greatest Celt is suffering from that most debilitating illness. Never met Billy personally but I have been in his presence many many times, and we do have something in common, something I’ve never forgotton to this day;

Billy scored his first goal for us on the same day I saw my first Celtic game.

And we won that day too!

VFR … believe it or not, you are lucky that happened 10 years ago …. nowadays, they are so much stricter on children going through immigration without both parents … or one parent and a notarized letter from the other. Sad that it is necessary now.

As for Toronto airport (Pearson), I share your frustration …. it is not the best airport, for sure ….whenever possible, I try to take Porter/the small island airport instead… .on a recent trip, it took us more time just to get our bags (2 hours) at Toronto than it did to fly from New York to Toronto via the island airport, and take a cab home!

  19. VFR800…

I laughed heartily at your airport story.

    Agent says, ‘open the bags’.

I wish Efe Ambrose all the good luck in the world.

The past is the past, he should never have asked to play in that game against Juventus though – practically straight off a plane from Africa.

Remember the outstanding Celtic footballer he was prior to said game.

When footballers lose confidence and belief in their ability it’s a difficult struggle to get back to their best.
