Efe the enigma, when our heroes get ill

480

The challenge Efe Ambrose will face should he proposed move to Hibs go through will be considerably less taxing that what he faced in the Premiership, or in Europe, with Celtic. Efe will go down in folklore as another African Cup of Nations enigma.

He was part of the heroic story against Barcelona in November 2012, before heading to the African Cup of Nations two months later. That tournament would see the player achieve the peak of his continent’s football Kilimanjaro. He played right back for champions, Nigeria.

That was on the Sunday. By the Tuesday he had been flown across the globe and made the starting line-up for Celtic in their Champions League last 16 game against Juventus. Two minutes into the game Efe was caught underneath the ball and out of position, Juventus exploited the lapse to the full.

As far as Efe’s time at the top goes, that was that. Since then his form has been on a pronounced downwards trajectory. The thing is, he’s still only 28. There was a player of considerable value in there one. If someone can bring focus to him, there may be again.

A word on matters relating to illness and medical information of our heroes…………

Pretty much everyone knew of Billy McNeill’s condition for some time but thankfully, it wasn’t subject to online speculation. There are a few guidelines on health matters which are worth observing:

Health is a private matter and should not be discussed online unless and until the person or family decide otherwise.

While we feel close to our heroes and will naturally want to offer support at a time of need, serious illness is the most private of matters, it is wholly inappropriate for a former footballer to hear his condition is a matter of public knowledge.

A bereavement should only be ‘revealed’ online by someone acting on the explicit instructions of the family. The unofficial release of this type of news is a very regretful manifestation of the internet age.

In recent years, we have seen many occasions of older celebrities’ deaths being incorrectly reported, then retweeted and retold thousands of times before it is denied. For an ill person and their family this can be a horrific experience.

The world can do without our condolences for a couple of hours until the family concerned have been able to contact all members.

These guidelines are scrupulously followed by the mainstream media in Scotland, who will hear of a footballer’s bereavement but hold the news – and prepare their reaction – until the family are ready.

For former-Celtic players, the club will usually be in touch with the family and release the news at the appropriate time. If you want to express your condolences, prepare your thoughts but hold until an official announcement.

  1. Despite losing tonight Aberdeen still have 11 games to play so could finish on 85 points.

We are on 76 so need 10 points to be crowned champions.

If Aberdeen keep winning it’s looking like Tynecastle. If they drop any more points then Dens Park could be the venue. All assuming that Celtic keep on winning.

So 10 points required form the following fixtures

    Inverness (A)

    The Rangers (H)

    Dundee (A)

    Hearts (A)

    Partick (H)

Blantyretim, a pal of mine told me the Dons were not as greetin faced tonight with the ref as they are when they play us for whatever reason.

  4. Sevco/deidco must be one of the spawnyest clubs out there, even when raphael they still linger near the top due tae the scheidt that surrounds them. Not only that but the Tradamus Lampada FP that got sent aff the night will probably be banned for their game on Saturday morning.

Petec, I’m sorry if I gave the impression of having a pop at you.

I just wanted to let you know that Keevins was solely responsible for his press privileges being withdrawn by Celtic.

He used being ‘banned from Celtic Park ‘ instead of saying the truth , he was not banned and could pay or put on his expense account , the cost of getting into our ground.

Can’t remember who asked the question about Bertie Padden, the referee, but he was indeed a member of the Ardrossan Garryowen CSC at one time. Funnily enough, if I am not mistaken he had the ‘right name’ for his part-time job as his forename was Barclay therefore a member of the two surname clique!!

*It was I, it was something that lingered in the back of my mind until the name Ardrossan Garryowen came up there. I could then recall an article in one of the papers, could have been the Celtic and trade union unfriendly weekly news where in response I believe Bert played the Ian Archer card, “I’m not a casey affleck”.

  11. Petec, lay offf the preaching will you please? I’m beginning to feel the way I do when AwNaw comes on–a one-legged penguin with gout. It’s wering, honestly. 20. What a goal for el camarero gordo español and his team tonight. Diame with a great, subtle little flick, following a mis-hit shot over the keeper, and a defender on the line, into the postage stamp top corner, for Los Jorgitos. Idiot commentator and pundit saying he didn’t know anything about it, but an expert eye can see how he just shapes his foot that tiny fraction to divert the ball towards goal. !estupendo!

“Why did we wear the all green strip v Vojvodina at Celtic Park?”

From the Celtic View 1st March 1967….

    “Jock Stein says…

The people of Novi Sad will see the green and white hoops of Celtic this day – and not, as Vojvodina, our European Cup opponents, may have hoped, an alternative strip. We had a message from them at the week-end to the effect that they would play in an all-white strip both on their own ground and at Celtic Park in the second game a week tonight. But we are conversant with the rules of the competition and they will not get away with that. The home club must change if there is any chance of a clash in colours. We shall welcome Vojvodina to Celtic Park in their all-white – we shall use our all-green rig-out on March 8 – but is is up to them to find another strip for this evening’s game.”

PS Well done to Betis tonight securing a 2-1 win – wearing the hoops – at Malaga.
