Efe the enigma, when our heroes get ill

480

The challenge Efe Ambrose will face should he proposed move to Hibs go through will be considerably less taxing that what he faced in the Premiership, or in Europe, with Celtic. Efe will go down in folklore as another African Cup of Nations enigma.

He was part of the heroic story against Barcelona in November 2012, before heading to the African Cup of Nations two months later. That tournament would see the player achieve the peak of his continent’s football Kilimanjaro. He played right back for champions, Nigeria.

That was on the Sunday. By the Tuesday he had been flown across the globe and made the starting line-up for Celtic in their Champions League last 16 game against Juventus. Two minutes into the game Efe was caught underneath the ball and out of position, Juventus exploited the lapse to the full.

As far as Efe’s time at the top goes, that was that. Since then his form has been on a pronounced downwards trajectory. The thing is, he’s still only 28. There was a player of considerable value in there one. If someone can bring focus to him, there may be again.

A word on matters relating to illness and medical information of our heroes…………

Pretty much everyone knew of Billy McNeill’s condition for some time but thankfully, it wasn’t subject to online speculation. There are a few guidelines on health matters which are worth observing:

Health is a private matter and should not be discussed online unless and until the person or family decide otherwise.

While we feel close to our heroes and will naturally want to offer support at a time of need, serious illness is the most private of matters, it is wholly inappropriate for a former footballer to hear his condition is a matter of public knowledge.

A bereavement should only be ‘revealed’ online by someone acting on the explicit instructions of the family. The unofficial release of this type of news is a very regretful manifestation of the internet age.

In recent years, we have seen many occasions of older celebrities’ deaths being incorrectly reported, then retweeted and retold thousands of times before it is denied. For an ill person and their family this can be a horrific experience.

The world can do without our condolences for a couple of hours until the family concerned have been able to contact all members.

These guidelines are scrupulously followed by the mainstream media in Scotland, who will hear of a footballer’s bereavement but hold the news – and prepare their reaction – until the family are ready.

For former-Celtic players, the club will usually be in touch with the family and release the news at the appropriate time. If you want to express your condolences, prepare your thoughts but hold until an official announcement.

Hugh Kevins is to football writing what Mark McGhee is to football coaching but I’m sure they’ve both received the Good News and have no tattoos…

Back in 2012, James Forrest wrote, accurately and presciently, the following about Keevins and his ilk:

“I am sure that at the bottom, scrambling around writing match reports at Third Division games (a popular gig at the moment I hear, judging by the number of lead writers who are showing up to cover them) and writing about Scotland’s other sports, there are any number of cracking writers, probably younger folk, who have the fire in their bellies and know what they got into the business to do. I exempt them from criticism, and pray they read the blogs, and look at the veteran journalists with the same weariness we do. These people are not to blame. It is those at the top, those whose names are most familiar, the likes of Traynor, Guidi, Jackson, King, Keevins and others, who have crashed circulations, destroyed entire institutional reputations and threatened the very sports journalism industry in which they have worked for years.”

    That’s valid criticism, not hate.

Stop playing the Zombies’ game of equating telling the truth, (you’re a new club) with hating.

Hugh Keevins was not banned from Celtic Park, he had his press privileges withdrawn.

He could still access Celtic Park but had to pay to get in and would not be given use of the facilties other members of the press are given.

He paid the price for his article blaming Celtic for the cancellation of the Sean Fallon tribute game and was not the case. The article was completely inaccurate and I was told by Sean’s son , it upset his family.

Keevins upsetting a fine family like the Fallons was enough for me.

Prestonpans bhoy, maybe Accies have used the big red bus usually parked behind one of the goals .

Ryan Christie has payed quite well so far.

  6. beatbhoy,

Hugh said he done what he done for his Family, paying for his Daughters wedding.

I Admire Everyone that is Heroic.

    Hugh was Brutally Honest.

That deserves a little bit of Respect.

    Heroic Critics?

You know exactly why Keevins got his press pass at Celtic taken away, but you want to come on here playing Jesus and expect us to lap it up.

Maybe you could direct your love to Sean Fallon’s family, a legendary Celt dragged through the mud by a lowlife like Keevins.

His daughters’ wedding my hairy Irish arse..

I know at least why HK had his press privileges revoked.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt as the old saying goes..

I can’t wait to go skiing, it is going to be Great.

Stunned why you are so Hateful of HK. He is a Nobody.

    Celtic have said so.

  12. Petec

Yeah, I’d say James Forrest is pretty heroic, actually, in terms of writing the truth that so many don’t want to hear, using his own name and standing up to threats and intimidation.

The real cowards are those who try to suppress the truth, or, at least, ignore it, for their own personal gain, no matter their motivation.

However, you miss the point. Can you distinguish between fair criticism and hatred, or are they one and the same thing to you?

  13. PETEC

I’m not hateful to HK I just know why he was banned, your head is up your arse mate and if anyone challenges your bollocks you call them a hater..

Stick to knowing nothing it’s what you do best..

Whilst we’re on the subject of journalism or more specifically, journalists, I recently read a quote by American author Upton Sinclair Jr….”It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.” …it is not easy for a Tim in our football media circus, unless of course……

Petec, I’m sorry if I gave the impression of having a pop at you.

I just wanted to let you know that Keevins was solely responsible for his press privileges being withdrawn by Celtic.

He used being ‘banned from Celtic Park ‘ instead of saying the truth , he was not banned and could pay or put on his expense account , the cost of getting into our ground.

  20. 21 corners
