An away trip to St Johnstone on the back of an away trip to Fenerbahce was a challenging one on paper. Teams drop more points away from home after an away European game than under any other circumstances, but yesterday went as well as we could have hoped for.
Nadir Ciftci has failed to set imaginations alight since arriving in the summer but the support were delighted for the player and his prospects, after two excellently taken goals. The first, controlling a corner on his thigh before turning and thrashing the ball into the corner of the net, was top drawer. More please.
Our other summer signing who has recently pulled some form together is Dedryck Boyata. Dedryck was the proverbial bag of nerves earlier this season. He looked clumsy with the ball at his feet, was wasteful when passing and was part of a defence which could not defend corner kicks. The arrival of Jozo Simunovic in the team coincided with Dedryck looking more like a Celtic player.
Without European football the second half of the season has an anti-climactic feel to it but it’s important for both these players. They, like many others in the squad, have a lot to prove after some indifferent performances. Not all will make it. Several, who are teetering on the brink of the first team, will find their opportunities limited, so there is no such thing as an unimportant game. Every game is important when you are trying to improve your reputation, every corner is important as is every chance.

meant to say on my last post well done to Nah Dear Shift Key on his two goals. Both, but especially the first, were well taken, and he had another shot on target too. Given that his confidence is at rock bottom it was a brave performance. His comments right after the game seemed to be those of a team player.
He is only 23, and I think turned down a transfer to England to join us. I hope his goal buys him some time with the support. He can only play better with it IMO.

I agree with the CQN’ers who are talking about confidence in the team, we looked so much better after the first goal. Another pleasing point against the Saints was that the defence played it safe when under pressure. There were quite a few balls knocked out of the park instead of taking a risk.

Re Ciftci, I’m a huge believer in if a guy is doing OK leave him in. I think Ronny should start Ciftci ahead of Griffiths next game.

Maybe Cowie, but if Ronny is playing 1 up front, I think he should go with Ciftci. It’s all about confidence and momentum. Another decent game and another couple of goals and we could have an entirely different player on our hands.

Just my opinion on where currently find ourselves.
Since joining us in June 2014, under Ronny, we have seriously deteriorated in European competition.

we were regularly poor in Europe over the last 35 years, Due firstly to defensive naivety for the first few decades , followed by refs clamping down on what they see as over robust play – hence Ronny’s focus on playing football the same way in the league as in Europe : hence our good record in games after Europe ( just wish the actual Europe thing went better )
We have been too open in some European games , once the manager sorts this and the back 4 settle , we will be in far better shape.

From qualifying out of last seasons Europa league, to only getting 3 pts in this one, is a serious decline
Ronny has led us in over 20 European games now, I have yet to see us play a far superior team.
My opinion, this season, none of those played have been any better than an SPFL team
They have possibly better tactically more aware managers ?
We are still being found out in games similar to the way were against Legia Warsaw, we ain’t learning in my view – down to Ronny
My frustration, and this is not over confidence, we should have done much much better this season, should have beaten Malmo, giving us at least £15m
We should have qualified out of this Europa league – no idea how much this is worth
We were ahead in most games, then got picked off too easily with the huge holes we leave in the structure we play
