Examining sentiment ineffective governance

587

You’ll remember the days of the season ticket waiting list. Then came the imaginary waiting list, which existed a while after seats were openly available. Now anyone can browse onto the Celtic web site and view exactly how many seats are available, and where, inside Celtic Park. It tells a fascinating story.

There’s the odd solitary seat and a few hundred with restricted views but that aside only the previously-closed part of the Lisbon Lions upper is not subscribed – and a significant number of tickets there will not include games against Newco, who are likely to ask for their entire entitlement according to league rules.

We’ve not seen anything like this since 1995 when Celtic Park reopened. Season 1994-95, at 34,000 capacity Hampden, was far from inspiring. We didn’t even sell-out a late-season game against Oldco, but Fergus had mortgaged our future on a partly-built 40,000 seater stadium, with projects underway to finish the job.

I looked at the empty seats at Hampden that day in 1995 and wondered if Fergus had blown his money. It didn’t look possible that we’d come anywhere close to filling a much larger stadium. As last season came to an end today’s ticket bonanza looked equally unlikely (although I did expect a pick-up).

Sometimes it doesn’t pay to examine sentiment too closely, just be grateful when you have it and know that it can change quickly when it’s against you.

Noting the increase in match day traffic around Celtic Park, you have to wonder how many millions of man hours will be wasted sitting in immobile cars and buses because Police Scotland no longer man traffic lights to allow spectators to leave the area quickly after events.

That’s another cost of our Offensive Behaviour’ Bill. Ponder that when you’ve moved 1 mile in an hour next season. Event-related gridlocks are another manifestation of ineffective governance. For decades police had budget to control traffic junctions at major events, not any more, in Scotland, anyway.

    ………………………

McNee was the Producer of Scotsport. It was his job to know and inform viewers. WGS, like many other managers, aren’t aware until they know the outcome of other matches and have to be informed by someone else after the match. McNee had that info available or should have had.

Not really that interested in defending McNee, just recalling Wee Gordon’s look of surprise, and not daring to believe what the interviewer was telling him.

I’ve never seen any other manager being interviewed post-match in the CL who wasn’t aware whether his team had qualified or not. It wasn’t so much the result of the other match in our group that night that mattered, it was the rule about he head-to -head results against another team in the group in the event of a tied points total that seemed to cause the confusion.

And we had that over Manure on away goals.

19–20.07 CL Second qualifying round, second leg

    23.07 Leicester City

26–27.07 CL Third qualifying round, first leg

02–03.08 CL Third qualifying round, second leg

    06.08 SPFL League begins

16–17.08 CL Play-off round, first leg

23–24.08 CL Play-off round, second leg

  11. And if you thought CL qualification rules could be complicated, wait till you see the criteria for the 4 best 3rd placed teams to go through with the top two in each group for the overblown Euro tournament coming up. Only 8 teams will exit out of the 24 in the groups.

Morning Bhoys well Stokes is away someone in my opinion could get a no bad striker if he behaves himself he is only 27 and coming into his best years as a player.I think Commons may well be next to go and that will only leave Mulgrew as the last of the dressing room rebels. It is interesting for me to see that Brendan is not diving straight in to purchase players but is taking his time that means I hope we have a better chance that they will hit the ground running. H.H

  13. Four best third placed teams criteria:

    1: higher number of points

    2: superior goal difference

3: higher number of goals scored

4: fair play conduct ( 1 point yellow card, 3 points red as result of 2yellows, 3 for a direct red, 4 points for a yellow then direct red, 10 points for use of baseball bat on opponent)

5: position in the UEFA national team coefficient rankings.

ON February 21, 2015, Ken Meech, a 50-year-old sheet metal worker from Cleethorpes, travelled to London to attend the Barnet v Grimsby Town game.

As a Mariners fan, Ken — along with the 968 other travelling Grimsby supporters — wasn’t going to miss this clash as the clubs were first and second in the league and, with only one automatic promotion spot available, defeat was unthinkable.

Upon arrival at the Hive Stadium, Ken, along with his friends, went to a nearby pub and had a few drinks — as thousands of people do on a match day. Nothing excessive. Just enjoying the day.

As they left, Ken spotted a party gift shop next door and wandered in. He came out with 15 inflatable sharks which, given the marine element of his club, he thought he would distribute to his friends as a bit of fun.

They were searched as they entered the ground and there were no complaints about the inflatables. The group duly took their places and watched the game. It was a tense affair. Grimsby led at half time only to concede an equaliser.

However, as the game reached the 90th minute, Grimsby midfielder Craig Disley netted from close range to send the away end into delirium.

    Embed from Getty Images

Ken was at the front of the stand and was caught up in a crowd surge as fans ran from the terraces rushed to greet the celebrating players. Of course, Ken still had his inflatable shark and was jumping around as we all would in the circumstances.

As the scene died down, Ken was approached by a WPC and found himself being led away from the throng. Genuinely confused, he was taken out of the ground and put in a police van. It was there that he was told that he was being held for assaulting a steward with his shark. It transpired that he had accidentally struck the steward on the head during celebrations.

He was taken away to Harrow police station and questioned. As the police officers sat with him before his taped interview they giggled at the ridiculousness of the “offence” — only to change tone the second the recording began.

  24. Has it been confirmed that the 2 top teams from ‘Norn Iron’ will compete in next seasons petrol pump cup? This will of course mean that the Zombies hordes will be joined by their ‘Ulster Scots’ brethren. Pity the club that gets drawn against Linfield.

For Renato Sanches, the wonder boy from a troubled Lisbon neighbourhood, it was an extraordinary 19 months. Rewind to 19 October 2014 and he was playing for one of Benfica’s junior teams against Sporting. Come 10 May 2016 he was signing for Bayern Munich for an initial €35m.

It was the deal of a lifetime for Benfica. Documents show that in 2007 Sanches cost them €750, plus the promise of 25 footballs for his local club Aguias in the Musgueira area of Portugal’s capital. Bayern’s fee could rise to €45m in add-ons. The trigger points vary from the number of games Sanches plays for Bayern to the powerful midfielder being nominated for the Ballon d’Or by 2021.
