Facing systems in flux

312

Motherwell started the season as Scotland’s first laughingstock, losing home and away to Sligo Rovers (apologies for the unavoidable slight, Rovers).  Their fragility was soon resolved with wins at St Mirren and Aberdeen, and home to Livingston, in their opening four league fixtures.

Since that win over Livi nine weeks ago, results dipped.  Defeat at Kilmarnock, a home draw against Dundee United and a thrashing at home to Hearts last time out (although they comfortably disposed of Inverness in the League Cup during this spell), suggest a system very much in flux.  Oh, how we’ve been there.

Steven Hammell was confirmed as permanent manager in August.  He clearly has the backing of his players and brought a system that can bloody the nose of most teams in the league.  I suspect, however, that the same system’s fragilities are now well know.  Hearts soaked up waves of attacking play at Fir Park, before delivering three sucker punches without reply.

Ange Postecoglou will be desperate to get this game underway to put the debacle of Paisley behind him.  The trip to Germany will also be on his mind, though I don’t expect anyone to be rested tomorrow.  Ideally, we will secure the points early on and allow the manager to rest his captain and a few others.  Some of the early brilliance we have seen in games from Celtic this season should be enough.

Hello again all you young rebels.

From a lovely sunny Melbourne garden suburb.

My isolation period is over, it’s game day, take another wee

PCR test hopefully clear, and just look after the princess who

seems to have been hit harder with the lurgy than I was.

Interesting to see how our centre backs handle the roughhouse

tactics Murderwell are sure to employ today, especially after

seeing how successful the mirin were last week.

I’m sure Ange will have the bhoys well instructed in their need to

    win individual physical contests.

    Celtic 4 – Motherwell 0

Good to hear you are getting better and look after the Princess, surely. Hope your prediction comes true, but we have a few injuries to cope with.

We’ll be fine as long as we start with our best available XI.

I’m probably a pessimist at heart, and I am worried about the centre half position. I dont know enough to say, but would it be a good idea to play big Olie to protect that area?

  8. I do remember them ripping up the cobbles when the trams stopped in 1962. If my memory serves me correctly people put pennies on the track and kept them as a souvenir after the trams ran over them.

Don’t think that’s Ange’s way, I would be tempted to rest Callum at an early stage in the game if we go a couple up.

Wednesday will take care of itself, 3 points today is the focus.

Sadly, the last time I was at Celtic Park (oh no – here we go again) is 4 years now, and I haven’t seen any of the new bhoys in the flesh so to speak. But, in Ange we do trust.

Time for brekkies – I was just hoping to leave a wee Motherwell themed poser before I go.

  11. Just seen this

Midfielder Orestis Kiomourtzoglou wants to “make a name” for himself at Hearts

He’s got enough letters to make several.

Hello again all you young rebels.

G’day bhoys and ghirls, here we go, time to show our

resolve and hopefully our reserve power will be good enough

to put the brutal muthers to the sword.

After a week of isolation had to get down our local parks to

check out the dressing rooms, clubhouse etc, loads of our

young loons there having a kickabout in the lovely sunshine.

Game stopped and they all came over for a chat and see how

I was, didn’t half perk me up I can tell you.

Most of them I’ve known since children, so it was well appreciated.

I suppose anybody who has coached will know what I mean 🥰

JOE McBRIDE, 36 GOALS FROM 26 GAMES; THE MOST PROLIFIC STRIKER IN THE WORLD!

    0

By CQN Magazine on 30th March 2016 Lions & Legends

One of the drawbacks of football – at any level – is the ever present risk of injury. Over the past half century, Celtic have lost many fine players, often with devastating results for player and club. Hugh Gallagher look at 6 such players starting with Joe McBride.unspecified-23

Joe McBride was signed by Jock Stein for Celtic in summer 1965 for the bargain basement price of £22,000. To put that figure in perspective, Alex Ferguson, a vastly inferior striker, joined Rangers shortly after that, for more than 3 times McBride’s fee. McBride was an immediate success. His regular strike partner was Stevie Chalmers, with Bobby Lennox and John Hughes, also partnering him on occasions.

In 1965-66 he scored 31 goals and helped Celtic to our first League Championship since 1954 and to the first of 9 in a row. One of the highlights of that campaign was the 5-1 New Year win over Rangers; McBride didn’t score but assisted greatly with Chalmers’ hat trick. He played in the League Cup Final win against Rangers and was unlucky not to be part of a Treble winning team, as Celtic were undeservedly beaten 1-0 by Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final replay, losing to a last minute Kai Johansen goal.

Joe also contributed towards Celtic’s excellent run in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Liverpool knocked Celtic out at the Semi Final stage but a final place at Hampden was denied by the referee wrongly ruling out a last minute Bobby Lennox goal at Anfield. During that run, he scored against Dutch team Go Ahead Eagles and Danes’ Aahrus, in the first 2 rounds.

McBride had an unbelievable start to 1966-67. He scored against Nantes and Zurich, helping Celtic to the last 8 of the European Cup, in our first attempt at the competition. He played in the League Cup Final win against Rangers. As Christmas approached, Joe McBride was, literally, the most prolific striker in the world, having scored 36 goals in 26 games. However, disaster struck and he picked up a knee injury against Aberdeen, which put him out for the rest of the season. Incredibly, by the end of 1966-67, he was still Scotland’s top striker, despite missing half of the season. Willie Wallace proved an able replacement but the question will always be asked – how many goals would Joe McBride have scored in 1966-67 if he hadn’t been injured?unspecified-24

During that unbelievable 16 month scoring spell, Joe McBride amassed a total of 2 Scotland caps – a reflection, certainly not on McBride, but on the anti Celtic bias that pervaded Scottish football.

  16. Bhoyjoebelfast on

Wonderful talent Joe McBride. My only time in the main stand and Joe scored twice v Hearts in a league cup sectional tie.
