Familiar demons

358

In any other season, the three points would have been secured by David Turnbull’s exquisite free-kick on 82 minutes, but the fragility around everything Celtic at the moment convinced no one the game was over.

A Hibs free-kick in added time saw three Celtic players get in each other’s way on the goal line, leaving three unattended attackers ready to pounce around the six yard line.  Another free kick conceded in a dangerous area, another example of defensive disorganisation and another tale of woe as Hibs scored their first goal and collected their only point in four games.

With Ryan Christie unavailable, David Turnbull moved to the right, allowing Tom Rogic a rare start in the advanced point of the diamond.  This may have worked on paper but on the field, it only demonstrated what a valuable asset Turnbull has become in the middle of the park.  15 minutes after moving into his accustomed 10 position, Turnbull won and converted a free kick that should have been enough against a Hibs team low on confidence.

Instead, the demons that haunted Celtic for most of the season returned.  Diego Laxalt conceded the free-kick, Turnbull was beaten to the header, Conor Hazard flapped at the second ball before Shane Duffy and Callum McGregor simultaneously attempted to clear, only managing to usher the ball in the direction of Nisbet.

After the game, I realised I felt worse after we equalised in added time against Hibs in November than on losing a late goal last night.  The points dropped in November felt significant, I cannot say the same about last night’s.

For me the penny finally dropped in the Europa Campaign, specifically Sparta Prague, 4 -1 home and away, that confirmed a long term problem and no quick fix unless we changed the coach – well we still haven’t changed the coach. Neil is a great guy but unfortunately a very average football coach.

  2. I watched last nights game and apart from a couple of half decent long range shots in the 1st half from us, and obviously the superb Free Kick from young Turnbull later on, I just couldnt see us scoring if we had played all night ?

Young Harper looked liked a wee Bhoy playing against men, I am sorry to say, and Frimpers and Mikey Johnstone, Dembele were also light weight.

At times last night it reminded me of when we had the likes of wee Brian McLaughlin in midfield against Huns like Albertz and Ferguson etc. Big Guys that would just simply brush aside and dispossess any wee Celtic player.

I honestly thought that Hibs deserved a Draw. They passed up a few opportunities especially with the number of corners they had.

Although he made a couple of good stops in the game, Im afraid young Hazard lived up to his name at the Hibs goal. just like the Cup Final last month he was Flapping Big time… and reminded me of that other imposter Packy Bonner.

I think that IF we had won 1-0 last night we may have felt a wee bit better Today…but with the lack of options that we have right now due to self isolation etc…I fully expect Livingston will fancy their chances of 3 points this week end ?

By qualifying for the Europa League 3 seasons in a row they have significantly contributed to Scotlands coefficient which lead to Scotland being awarded a 2nd CL qualifying place for 2021/22.

No other team outside Celtic contributed anything near to the co-efficient boost that made this additional CL qualifying place possible.

I was born in a Tenement Flat just doon the road from Springburn…in the auld TOONHEID. My Cousins and I had hours of fun ” Jumpin the Dykes” in the mankie back courts.

For younger readers…the Phrase ” Jumpin the Dykes” had a whole different meaning back in the 1950’s.

In the 1960’s I went to the Pictures in the Toon Heid…and sometimes I was taken to the Prince’s Picture Hall in Springburn as a ” Special Treat”…I thought I was on my holidays LOL !

Those ” Dykes” were feckin dangerous !

“The “defending” of Hibs goal last night is possibly the wort of the season. Turnbull out muscled for the initial header,”

don’t recall posting that comment re DT being out muscled , but I do believe is was shocking defending.

  7. It’s been asked if things can get any worse. Would anyone bet their mortgage we’ll finish second?

  8. The silence surrounding our efforts at squad management would suggest that we are not in it to win it.

  9. I think we have to suck it up and be proud celtic fans.

Hopefully we will get the new manager, coaches and CEO we all believe we need.

Hopefully we will use this half season to iron out the mistakes ,get rid of the passengers and bed in some younger players.

I feel we should act responsibly and show the good grace in defeat that has never been offered to us.

When the new champions are crowned we should give them a guard of honour ….yes I said it.

  11. Describing Neil Lennon as an average manager is being very kind.

He’s poor. He’ll likely never manage again after he’s finally sacked. If he does it’ll be Scottish Championship level at best.

    He can’t condition his side.

His in game management is abysmal.

He’s far too loyal to under performing players – see Soro and Turnbull warming the bench for weeks as we struggled through November.

    He doesn’t develop young players.

We all know how most of us felt when he was announced as permanent boss after the treble treble.

If supporters were well aware of his short comings them so should our £3 million PA Chief Executive.

From the appointment to the steadfast support for his failing manager, I’m afraid Lawwell has to share Neil’s fate.

  12. Also — could I please call out AW — Sky summariser — as a disgrace to the nation / his parents / himself for all the rubbish he spouted during last night’s match.

Beyond parody for his negativity and criticism of the team including young guys trying their best.

He really is an absolute reptile and then some.

From being in the position of keeping Rangers/ relevant ( Second place ) we now find ourselves in a struggle to stay ahead of Aberdeen, hopefully we win the game in hand or it will get very nervy…..livi will provide a good test .

  14. I think Welsh had a good night last night. I wish Shane Duffy all the best. He’s the victim of coming into Celtic at a time we will undoubtedly look back on as being that of the worst organised Celtic side in a generation.

Shane will return to England and look every bit the player he has when part of a functional defence.

For the next few months though, play Welsh.

  15. The Andy Walker after match pitch side summarising was disgraceful, the most arrogant of men tells others they are arrogant and misguided,

    to follow

Stephen McGowan, of the Daily Mail on a late night talk with Blue Tie McKay, and Speirs was another point scoring arsehole, live from Greenock.

Speirs was the most realistic of them all, basically saying we wouldnt have these problems if football had just shut down, it is not special

This coming from a guy that said Callum Mcgregor was at best a squad player ….lol

  17. Goal conceded last night could have been prevented by an old fashioned “push out” after inital ball. This takes momentum outwardly away from goal, rather than inviting the ball towards it. 3 guys running out towards player heading or shooting puts him off. Seemed pretty basic.

  18. NOTTHEBUS on 12TH JANUARY 2021 11:06 AM

The “defending” of Hibs goal last night is possibly the wort of the season. Turnbull out muscled for the initial header, keeper flapping about like an amateur, while 3 Celtic players retreat to the line leaving 4 Hibs players unmarked in the 6 yard box. Duffy with a chance to clear weakly stabs it into the path of Nisbet who can pick his spot.

Re Turnbull at the goal. Sorry not having that ,He was outmuscled.

If we are doing frame by frame forensic, Henderson could have given away a penalty away by pulling the Hibs player by the shirt as the ball arrives.

As our stand in manager said in his post match interview, We were “massively outgunned” when it came to the last minute setpiece.

    Our defending has been shambolic

  21. “SFA chief Ian Maxwell has confirmed that the compliance officer is looking into pictures from Celtic’s training camp in Dubai.”

Ouch! This could get messy. Nicola Sturgeon stood on a podium and listed her doubts and concerns about the Celtic Dubai trip, then in the next breath stated it’s for the “football authorities to decide if any further action is taken” to address the Scottish government’s concerns.

If football sanctions are applied to Celtic in response to such political pressure, then it puts Scottish football in a very difficult position. Fifa can suspend the membership of any national football team if they judge the association has been influenced by external political pressure, and they’ve banned international teams from their tournaments in the past.

No Scotland at Euro 2021? Bit of an own goal, Nicola.

  22. Anything yet from the top of the club …. Disgraceful does not even begin to cover it .

We are/have spending 2/3 million on same type of players .

And before anybody scoffs at this they paid 5ok for to he guy from Dundee will make them.millions a no risk gamble might have been all they can afford but it seems they might not just be taking our title but our eye for a player .

Re Turnbull at the goal. Sorry not having that ,He was outmuscled.

Do you think the Use of the left arm is legitimate there against Turnbull?

If we are doing frame by frame forensic, Henderson could have given away a penalty away by pulling the Hibs player by the shirt as the ball arrives.

I did not use frame by frame analysis- I called this out in real time on the blog last night- it is the kind of foul that gets routinely analysed when committed by a Celtic player but is uncontroversial when we are the victims.

I had not noted Ewaan Henderson’s “foul” so I went back to look at it. I see two players pulling and barging each other as I see with Welsh and his markker too.

I see nothing as blatant a the arm draped over the face & chest and the prevention of a jump that was done on Turnbull.

I agree that the defending thereafter was shambolic but this should have been whistled for the initial winning challenge. I dare any Celtic player to drape their arm over the face of an opponent and test whether they get away with it. It is one of the easier fouls to spot, if you want to look.

The trouble with our squad is it’s all filling with not enough cream on top . When a lot of your filling costs £1M or £2M + (Klimala , Shved , Bayo Barkas) a pop , then you have serious recruitment problems .
