Find how best to use Scott Brown

815

Neil Lennon will be delighted to have secured his captain, Scott Brown, on a new long-term contract which sees the player tied to the club until after his 30th birthday in 2015, with the club having an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

Scott joined Celtic in 2007 and played central midfield until last season, when he was occasionally used wide right, to great effect.  Reflecting some of the conversations we had earlier this week with Georgios Samaras, who has recently been a revelation wide-left after years of frustration as part of a front pairing, Scott seemed to revel in the space the wider position allowed him to exploit.

Before joining Celtic Scott made his name playing almost as an auxiliary striker at Hibernian, where he would burst into the box with well-timed runs but at Celtic he is more commonly anchored in a defensive midfield role.  As a consequence, despite having played more games for Celtic than Hibs, and playing for a team who attack far more often, he has still to match his Hibs goals scored total at Celtic.

THE UEFA disciplinary hearing on Thursday into “behaviour of an unsporting nature, namely illicit chanting” from Celtic supporters during last month’s Europa League match against Rennes in Glasgow could conclude with the club being found not guilty.

It is largely forgotten that when the first charge of “discriminatory chanting” was made against Rangers supporters after they had been in Villarreal in 2006, the control and disciplinary body cleared the Ibrox club of the offence, their verdict subsequently overturned after UEFA lodged an appeal.

It will be the same committee – which can be up to ten strong but requires only a chairman and two members to rule – who sit in judgment on Celtic, following video evidence lodged by Strathclyde Police understood to show chants of “ooh, ah, up the RA” emanating from the section of Celtic Park that houses the Green Brigade. In turn, Celtic have offered their own written submission. They requested to have a representative attend but this is not standard and perhaps reflects the minor nature of any possible sanctions. Not that any outcome is being viewed in those terms by Celtic. “It is a concern because you don’t want to be up on the charge in the first place,” said manager Neil Lennon.

Celtic are being investigated under Article 11.2 of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations. That rule states sanctions can be imposed on a club over suppporters’ “use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, in particular if it is of a political, offensive or provocative nature”. It’s a catch-all that allows UEFA leeway to punish practically any support, should they so wish. But they tend to use their powers sparingly and if the “ooh, ah, up the RA” chants are deemed a “first offence”, the likelihood is the worst case scenario for Celtic will be a small fine and a warning over future conduct.

Celtic’s IRA chants certainly fit the Article 11.2 charge sheet. But then so too would Barcelona fans hanging a Catalan separatist flag at the Nou Camp that was banned by the authorities. Or Atletico Bilbao supporters holding up banners demanding the release of convicted ETA terrorists. Or, indeed, Scotland supporters singing Flower of Scotland.

UEFA have, in the past, been keen to steer well clear of penalising “political” chanting because of the complexities inherent in deciding what is, or isn’t, acceptable. And what that decree could leave them open to if a precedent was set.

In late 2006, the then UEFA head of communications William Gaillard held a press briefing in Hampden at which he was asked why it was that Rangers fans had been pursued for “discriminatory” singing – in the form of the sectarian The Billy Boys – but UEFA have never investigated Celtic over their IRA chants. Gaillard described these as two separate issues and said Celtic could be bracketed with many clubs whose supporters championed nationalist causes and who UEFA did not see as meriting disiplinary procedures. Only when it came to the Balkan countries was the situation different, with clubs in those nations handed sanctions for their chanting for political organisations who, in pursuing ethnic cleansing, were by their nature discriminatory. That did not apply to the IRA, he stated.

In an effort to seek clarification on any potential shifts in policy from UEFA over the past four years we sent the governing body a list of questions covering the above issues. They declined to respond. The reality is that the disciplinary hearing on Thursday is not the product of any deep-seated disquiet in European football circles over Celtic supporters’ songbook. Instead, it has been brought about by the climate of clampdown in this country ahead of the new bill governing offensive behaviour and football grounds and the authorities’ concerns over the Green Brigade.

Privately, the police have admitted that it is their intention to “smash” the Irish Republican, Marxist Green Brigade. They are willing to go to extreme lengths, in terms of their use of survelliance and a wide range of extraneous powers, to do so. Meanwhile, Cetic would privately welcome a slap on the wrists from UEFA this week since they, and the vast majority of their supporters, want Celtic Park free of the embarrassment they feel over paens to the IRA – as the stadium was for the decade before the Green Brigade was formed. The complexities on these matters do not begin and end with what comes from supporters’ mouths.

IT COULDN’T be said that things aren’t going Rangers’ way. They might once more have failed to in any way convince, but the fact is they won for the first time in three outings courtesy of an own goal from Alex Keddie and a penalty that was softer than a marshmallow……..

The net-rippling moment Jelavic did provide came thanks to a 28th-minute spot-kick awarded by referee Steve Conroy after adjudging that Aluko had been touched when he weaved his way into the box past Martin Hardie. There was no evidence of contact on television replays.

It seemed to put Rangers out of reach of their visitors, seven minutes after the Fife team had gone behind in cringeworthy fashion. A pass-back from John Potter put goalkeeper Paul Gallacher under pressure and in his haste to clear he smacked Keddie with the ball, only for it to rebound straight past him. There must be something about playing in Glasgow that doesn’t agree with Keddie, since a fortnight ago he scored an own goal in the 2-1 defeat at Celtic Park. “This time there was nothing I could do about it, though,” he said. “If it had hit me on the belly it would have just dropped down but it hit my hip.”

Blackpool pay United old boy £90 a week while John O’Shea stumps up for his digs

    By Peter Higgs Mail Online:

Blackpool have been reported to the PFA for paying one of their senior players just £90 a week.

Friends of former Manchester United winger Bojan Djordjic contacted the players’ union after finding out he is relying on help from former team-mates like John O’Shea to live, and the PFA have pledged to look into the case.

Djordjic, 29, joined the Championship club last summer from Videoton in Hungary on an appearance-based deal but has not been picked by manager Ian Holloway.

A source said: ‘Blackpool were concerned about something in Bojan’s medical so they wanted to give him a contract of £90 a week plus appearance money.

‘It was Bojan’s understanding that, if he was fit, he would be member of the first-team squad, but it hasn’t happened and he’s been left with virtually nothing.

‘Although things didn’t work out for him at Manchester United, he was a popular figure there and John O’Shea is helping him with accommodation.’

Djordjic is thought to have received a pay-off from Videoton but that went to help his parents in Sweden.

The minimum wage means a worker earns £243 for a 40-hour week but the minimum wage for football clubs is £90 as it only covers time at the training ground.

The PFA may ask Blackpool to let the player leave in January if they have no plans to play him.

A Blackpool spokesman said: ‘All our players know the contracts they entered into and any player who appears in our first team is paid accordingly.’

Neil shows an admirable level of humility and sportsmanship to Peter Houston, hope its appreciated at Dundee Utd

Celtic’s manager, Neil Lennon, says he is now a much calmer presence in the technical area.

Neil Lennon says he no longer gives the events of 17 October 2010 a moment’s thought. Any Celtic visit to Tannadice, though, conjures up memories of a frantic afternoon and its epic aftermath. Sunday lunchtime will prove no different.

Celtic beat Dundee United in the corresponding fixture a year ago, Gary Hooper’s late goal seeing to that. The drama related to the overturning of a penalty award to the visitors and the circumstances of that decision proved more significant than the result.

Dougie McDonald, the official at the heart of the controversy, later resigned as a category one referee. Although McDonald’s position was ultimately untenable, the common, perhaps deliberate, misunderstanding was that the referee had lied to Lennon as some matter of conscious bias against Celtic. McDonald later received a warning from the Scottish Football Association after failing properly to explain his overturning of the penalty award.

It is difficult to believe more than a year has passed since the toxic atmosphere surrounding referees in Scotland was so prevalent. They even went on strike in an attempt to highlight their grievances. Thankfully calm has long since been restored. “Do you know what, I never give it a second thought,” Lennon says of that visit to Dundee United. “I enjoy Tannadice, it’s always a decent atmosphere. Does it feel like more than a year? It does – but there’s been a lot of other stuff crammed in between.”

Lennon refers to the threats made against him that provided such a bleak backdrop to the second half of last season. To his great credit the Northern Irishman retained focus on his professional goals throughout that spell. “I think I am a bit less confrontational on the touchline,” he says. “I don’t give the fourth official any abuse really. I have a wee rant and rave now and then but I don’t think I am as bad as I have been.

“I have had more things to worry about over what is going on on the pitch in terms of results. Like everything else in life you learn as you go along and you have to learn in this job because it is so huge. It is a massive undertaking.

“I’m more pleased the team has found consistency and they’re winning games. That was my major concern, that was taking up all my time.”

A smile follows. “I might start going after referees now, if you want me to …”

Lennon and Peter Houston, the United manager, have had the odd public, verbal joust. Yet Houston’s counterpart at Celtic claims he is pleased the United directors stuck by their manager, rather than issue the P45 that was rumoured to be imminent only weeks ago.

“I felt for him,” Lennon says. “When you consider who he’s had to sell – Craig Conway, David Goodwillie, Morgaro Gomis, Prince Buaben – that’s the cornerstone of the team. It’s difficult to rebuild that in such a short space of time.

“What they have done in recent years, though, is finish the season strongly. They find a formation that suits them and they go on a good run. Don’t forget Peter’s brought silverware to the club for the first time in a long time as well. So to be under pressure, most people thought it was ridiculous and I’m glad the board stuck by him.”

Lennon did likewise with Georgios Samaras. Celtic’s Greece international forward has shown glimpses of his best form amid the team’s useful domestic run. Not so long ago Samaras was a target for a vocally disenchanted section of the Celtic support.

“We keep asking ourselves as to why we get this inconsistency from him,” Lennon says of Samaras. “He has taken a lot of criticism and, to be fair to him, he has taken it well.

“He showed a lot of character to turn it. He might be slowly turning it but he is turning it. Other players would have completely gone under. In the Rennes game he made a couple of errors early on and the fans started getting on at him but he didn’t hide.

“I know he is a good player. The last month or so his attitude has been very, very good. We are getting good performances out of him at last.”

  21. Since the press ran a week of stories with butcher ranting about the sending off, I now look forward to parity of cover. A full week of paper articles, tv segments and pundits all angrily pointing out that thems got 3 points when they should have got 1.

    I’ll no hold my breath.

  22. JIM MCINTYRE RAPS REF OVER IBROX PENALTY

Jim McIntyre labelled ref Steve Conroy’s decision to give Rangers a penalty a “nightmare

    By Sunday Express Reporter

JIM McINTYRE labelled referee Steve Conroy’s decision to give Rangers a match-winning penalty a “nightmare” as Dunfermline left Ibrox empty-handed.

The decision, after Martin Hardie’s challenge on Sone Aluko, cost the Pars dear.

“The referee had a nightmare for their second goal,” rapped the East End Park boss.

“It was a really poor decision.

“In fact, there were a couple of poor decisions because he missed a Dorin Goian tackle on David Graham in a crucial area as well.”

McIntyre felt his side could have taken something from Ibrox after Joe Cardle pulled a goal back following Alex Keddie’s own-goal and the controversial Nikica Jelavic spot-kick.

“We had a great chance to equalise late on with Keddie’s header and although it took us 20-25 minutes to get a grip I thought we grew in belief as the game went on and I’m proud of the players,” said McIntyre.

“We were really stretched through injury with eight players out who would have been in

or around the team so we can take plenty of positives from this.

“And the spirit we showed again will see us fine this season.”

  23. “behaviour and football grounds and the authorities’ concerns over the Green Brigade.

The complexities on these matters do not begin and end with what comes from supporters’ mouths.”

  24. I can almost accept some of us think broonie has been played out of position and can still do us a turn, but he’s lost the red mist? Seriously? Didn’t watch his games against them last season where he’s a continual liability?

I think it’s a big mistake to commit so much of a limited budget for a player who, with the best will in the world, has achieved very little for us over the years.
