Find how best to use Scott Brown

815

Neil Lennon will be delighted to have secured his captain, Scott Brown, on a new long-term contract which sees the player tied to the club until after his 30th birthday in 2015, with the club having an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

Scott joined Celtic in 2007 and played central midfield until last season, when he was occasionally used wide right, to great effect.  Reflecting some of the conversations we had earlier this week with Georgios Samaras, who has recently been a revelation wide-left after years of frustration as part of a front pairing, Scott seemed to revel in the space the wider position allowed him to exploit.

Before joining Celtic Scott made his name playing almost as an auxiliary striker at Hibernian, where he would burst into the box with well-timed runs but at Celtic he is more commonly anchored in a defensive midfield role.  As a consequence, despite having played more games for Celtic than Hibs, and playing for a team who attack far more often, he has still to match his Hibs goals scored total at Celtic.

It is beginning to look like that scene from a Few Good Men when Nicholson loses it and shouts “The truth? You want to know the truth? You can’t handle the truth.”

  4. 3 points today bhoys, that’s all that matters.

Watched the biggest bunch of cheats on the planet and their non-penalty yesterday and have to say i felt disgusted .

The cheating is still going on unabated, so what is exactly the point in playing in this corrupt league.

We the fans are in desperate need of leadership to fight this corruption.

  9. The Boys in Blue have only one tactic available to them in this thorny issue.

If they are seen to engage in meaningful dialogue they would not be able to discount the merits of the political position.

The Brigade”smashing” strategy puts the encounter between representatives of Celtic and Them in the only suitable position that ensures total and unequivocal victory.

Whether it’s The Green Brigade or “The Old Brigade” – they will be “smashed” .

As offensive as that is, the question only remains how dirty and protracted the offensive will be.

Either way, it’s a Home win for Them.

  11. A very harsh, but hasty reminder to all Celtic fans who haven’t seen, or couldn’t watch the Ragers ‘penalty’ that Celtic need a minor miracle to be able to win the SPL. – Why did I joke when they Aluko signed ‘he was straight in the pool for his diving lessons’ *shakes head*

Today we have another Celtic experimental, with injury woes, and without hearing the latest team news for the umpteenth time Celtic’s line up will have altered, and I’d expect we’ll see the returning Captain ( you don’t pay that kind of money for a bench warmer ). The likelyhood is CM will play left back and SB will replace VW, seems straightforward enough.

But the tactical decision for NL will be whether he returns to, two strikers i.e. Hooper and Stokes leaving Kayal and Brown to be backed by wide men Forrest and Samaras.

If he does ( and I think he will ) – I’d expect Dundee Utd to be be much in the game, and the outcome very much in the balance because as usual we’ll be outnumbered in the centre midfield, and if this plan A to score before the opposition falters, we could regress quite quickly from recent ground we’ve made up.

Utd and Tannadice, Celtic on 4-4-2 with two wide, anything can happen.

  12. Gordon 64

Yeah I was there when they beat a strong Scotland team 4-1 . The Narey goal seemed to inspire the brazil boys .

I thought at the time the scot team tactics were much too negative -went a goal in front and then sat back inviting the Brazilians forward.

Teams who played aggressivly against that Brazil team got results.

  13. A quote from the hun’s wildcard Aluko, this season’s season’s Diouff:

“I felt there was contact and then I fell over. I’m not one that normally dives.”

Apart from the “penalty”, the MIB only gave Dunfermline ONE FOUL in the whole game

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/15901608.stm

That must be some sort of record even for Ipox.

A player from each team was yellow carded, so the game must have been “competitive” (for want of a better word).

God, even in friendlies – any team will commit at least half a dozen fouls – it’s part of the game.

The game in Scotland stinks, and part of the problem is that everybody has got used to the stench.

Back to sport, all I want from today is a a good performance and 3 points.

    Go so your stuff, Celtic!!!

  14. From the Hunday Mail

Dec 4 2011 by Gordon Waddellllyy, Sunday Mail

SONE ALUKO last night insisted he’s no cheat after winning Rangers the penalty which sealed their first win in a month.

The winger went down in the box to set up Gers’ second in a tense 2-1 win which reopened a seven-point gap on Celtic at the top of the SPL table.

But Dunfermline boss Jim McIntytre claimed whistler Steve Conroy had a “nightmare” with a decision he insisted was never a spot-kick.

Nikica Jelavic drove home the chance to add to an Alex Keddie own goal but Joe Cardle pulled one back before the Pars gave Rangers a fright late on.

Keddie headed over with just two minutes left and McIntyre said: “We had a great chance to grab an equaliser.

“The boys were superb after the break.

“But for Rangers’ second goal, the ref’s had a nightmare. I’ve watched it back on video and it’s never a penalty. It’s a really poor decision.”

Aluko, however, insists Conroy got it right – but his analysis was less than convincing.

He said: “When you’re at full pace in the box, the pitch is wet and you’re twisting and turning, then it’s hard to stay on your feet if there’s any contact.

“I felt there was contact then I fell over. I’m not one who normally dives. I thought it was a penalty and obviously the ref did as well.

“Dunfermline’s players didn’t protest either, did they? So I don’t see what the issue is.”

Aluko was Gers’ star turn in only his second game for the club.

And he insists he’s already over the blame attached to him for the goal which hurt his side at Kilmarnock last week.

He said: “If you make those mistakes you get criticism but I can deal with it. It happened on my debut at Aberdeen as well.

“I was at fault for a goal but you must be mentally strong to bounce back. I watched last week’s game back and cringed but it’s not a problem.”

Aluko could pose a problem for Rangers soon, though, if he continues the form he showed yesterday.

With the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off on January 21, Nigeria boss Stephen Keshi will be considering a recall.

Aluko wouldn’t be averse to a call-up, despite the obvious issues that would present for Rangers, but said: “You’d have to ask the manager.

“I’ve not been in recent squads but I’ve kept in contact with Nigeria.

“Hopefully being at a club the size of Rangers will help my chances.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Dunfermline were left to rue more self-inflicted wounds as Keddie scored his second own goal in as many games.

But the stopper insists the whole team have to stop shooting themselves in the foot.

He said: “It’s hard to come back from a goal down against anyone in the SPL, far less here.

“We’re not starting matches well. Teams are scoring in the first 20 minutes against us, the way Rangers and Celtic did, and then we settle.

“However, it’s too late sometimes – especially against the Old Firm.”

  22. FAC meeting with SNP MSP

Published on Saturday 3rd December, 2011 by Celtic Trust

Meeting between FAC and Humza Yousuf MSP

Meeting between FAC and Humza Yousuf MSP

On Tuesday 29 November, FAC met with Humza Yousuf, the Glasgow list SNP MSP at his request. Mr Yousuf indicated that he wished to enter into discussions with us re amendments to the Offensive Behaviour at Football Bill. The meeting was held in St Mary’s hall and the discussion took place over a couple of hours. The FAC members present reiterated the reason behind our opposition to the Bill ie

•No case has been made for separate legislation which only applies to football

•It is unnecessary in that existing legislation covers all the types of behaviour which the Bill is intended to cover

•It is unworkable in that it is not clearly written and the guidelines to the Police are no clearer

•It lacks legal certainty in that it is not clear what types of behaviour would be criminalised

We also indicated our grave concerns about how the Bill has developed and highlighted our view that the destruction of the data relating to the existing legislation (Section 74) has not been adequately explained. We raised the issue of the credibility of the Convenor of the Justice Committee, Christine Grahame who has been accused of holding anti-Catholic views and who, to our knowledge, has yet to deny this; and who is also currently under investigation by the Police for matters concerning election expenses.

Mr Yousuf responded at length. He indicated that the Bill was not perfect; that there was no consensus around it; and that legitimate negative points had been raised in relation to the Bill. However, he argued that the Bill could be amended to make it better and that it was only one strand in an overall Government strategy to deal with sectarianism. He stressed the issue of public disorder and argued that this was key to understanding how the Bill would be applied. He asked for interested parties like ourselves to put forward amendments which he could look at as we are now at a stage when only Justice Committee members can put forward amendments.

In response, we pointed out that there is no significant issue of public disorder in Scottish football to which Mr Yousuf replied that this was due to the high levels of policing. We did not accept this point and told him that the level of policing of even the Glasgow derby is nothing compared to the levels of policing in other countries. Even with the levels of policing there are at games, there is no evidence that the police struggle to maintain order.

Mr Yousuf said that he thought one area in which the Bill could be usefully amended was in relation to the part of the Bill relating to the notion of offensiveness. This is the most unclear and broadly drafted section. He also stated that previous amendments relating to freedom of speech are likely to be accepted.

Mr Yousuf agreed to follow up our concerns regarding the Section 74 data and the matter of Christine Grahame and her failure to deny the accusations against her.

He asked again for us to forward to him any amendments which we thought might strengthen the Bill.
