Find how best to use Scott Brown

815

Neil Lennon will be delighted to have secured his captain, Scott Brown, on a new long-term contract which sees the player tied to the club until after his 30th birthday in 2015, with the club having an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

Scott joined Celtic in 2007 and played central midfield until last season, when he was occasionally used wide right, to great effect.  Reflecting some of the conversations we had earlier this week with Georgios Samaras, who has recently been a revelation wide-left after years of frustration as part of a front pairing, Scott seemed to revel in the space the wider position allowed him to exploit.

Before joining Celtic Scott made his name playing almost as an auxiliary striker at Hibernian, where he would burst into the box with well-timed runs but at Celtic he is more commonly anchored in a defensive midfield role.  As a consequence, despite having played more games for Celtic than Hibs, and playing for a team who attack far more often, he has still to match his Hibs goals scored total at Celtic.

  1. Lads I’ve just seen the scumbags pen and it looks shocking but I won’t comment further untill I analyse it on the big screen.

I am sick and tired of telling people on here the only protection they have are the men in black and no one seems to want to do anything about it because it’s been happening for years.

And b4 I here pish it will even itself out it’s bullshit if we get Scottish Protestant refs out then no one can say biased to foreign refs.

So I’ll ask again what are we going to do about it?

It amazes me the media turned on kayal because they know we’re closing the gap but not 1 mention of this incident.

  2. CultsBhoy hates being 2nd,

    It’s just the abuse I don’t get.

    Disney matter how he performs.

He will never be given a chance by some.

  3. Just watched the pen.. nothing new, it’s how it plays out when their sssshhh… It took a dodgy decision and a bizar own goal for them to get the points, it can’t happen every week, well I hope not!

Like some have said, we’ve had our share of decisions, but they seem immune from criticism over players diving, when we had Aiden his character was trashed because he was fouled FFS !

Well, it can’t happen every week for them, but they are desperate so we might see a few more errors favouring them, so hopefully someone is taking notes as this pen takes second spot out of all the SPL’s honest mistakes this season so far, first spot goes to their other at ICT which clearly was not a pen.

How much scaffolding can the refs erect round a crumbling team? – it’s apparent in the foul count for and against, if Aberdeen got the same help they get they’d be mid table easy.

So it’s not just the occasional honest, sorry regular honest mistakes, it’s the protection from fouls and soft free kicks awarded that cause the most harm as teams are wary of tackling them compared to us, we get kicked off the park so bad that you’d think it was a different sport!

  7. Celtic unlikely to be hit hard by UEFA

    Published on Sunday 4 December 2011 00:34

THE UEFA disciplinary hearing on Thursday into “behaviour of an unsporting nature, namely illicit chanting” from Celtic supporters during last month’s Europa League match against Rennes in Glasgow could conclude with the club being found not guilty.

It is largely forgotten that when the first charge of “discriminatory chanting” was made against Rangers supporters after they had been in Villarreal in 2006, the control and disciplinary body cleared the Ibrox club of the offence, their verdict subsequently overturned after UEFA lodged an appeal.

It will be the same committee – which can be up to ten strong but requires only a chairman and two members to rule – who sit in judgment on Celtic, following video evidence lodged by Strathclyde Police understood to show chants of “ooh, ah, up the RA” emanating from the section of Celtic Park that houses the Green Brigade. In turn, Celtic have offered their own written submission. They requested to have a representative attend but this is not standard and perhaps reflects the minor nature of any possible sanctions. Not that any outcome is being viewed in those terms by Celtic. “It is a concern because you don’t want to be up on the charge in the first place,” said manager Neil Lennon.

Celtic are being investigated under Article 11.2 of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations. That rule states sanctions can be imposed on a club over suppporters’ “use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, in particular if it is of a political, offensive or provocative nature”. It’s a catch-all that allows UEFA leeway to punish practically any support, should they so wish. But they tend to use their powers sparingly and if the “ooh, ah, up the RA” chants are deemed a “first offence”, the likelihood is the worst case scenario for Celtic will be a small fine and a warning over future conduct.

Celtic’s IRA chants certainly fit the Article 11.2 charge sheet. But then so too would Barcelona fans hanging a Catalan separatist flag at the Nou Camp that was banned by the authorities. Or Atletico Bilbao supporters holding up banners demanding the release of convicted ETA terrorists. Or, indeed, Scotland supporters singing Flower of Scotland.

UEFA have, in the past, been keen to steer well clear of penalising “political” chanting because of the complexities inherent in deciding what is, or isn’t, acceptable. And what that decree could leave them open to if a precedent was set.

In late 2006, the then UEFA head of communications William Gaillard held a press briefing in Hampden at which he was asked why it was that Rangers fans had been pursued for “discriminatory” singing – in the form of the sectarian The Billy Boys – but UEFA have never investigated Celtic over their IRA chants. Gaillard described these as two separate issues and said Celtic could be bracketed with many clubs whose supporters championed nationalist causes and who UEFA did not see as meriting disiplinary procedures. Only when it came to the Balkan countries was the situation different, with clubs in those nations handed sanctions for their chanting for political organisations who, in pursuing ethnic cleansing, were by their nature discriminatory. That did not apply to the IRA, he stated.

In an effort to seek clarification on any potential shifts in policy from UEFA over the past four years we sent the governing body a list of questions covering the above issues. They declined to respond. The reality is that the disciplinary hearing on Thursday is not the product of any deep-seated disquiet in European football circles over Celtic supporters’ songbook. Instead, it has been brought about by the climate of clampdown in this country ahead of the new bill governing offensive behaviour and football grounds and the authorities’ concerns over the Green Brigade.

Privately, the police have admitted that it is their intention to “smash” the Irish Republican, Marxist Green Brigade. They are willing to go to extreme lengths, in terms of their use of survelliance and a wide range of extraneous powers, to do so. Meanwhile, Cetic would privately welcome a slap on the wrists from UEFA this week since they, and the vast majority of their supporters, want Celtic Park free of the embarrassment they feel over paens to the IRA – as the stadium was for the decade before the Green Brigade was formed. The complexities on these matters do not begin and end with what comes from supporters’ mouths.

“Privately, the police have admitted that it is their intention to “smash” the Irish Republican, Marxist Green Brigade. They are willing to go to extreme lengths, in terms of their use of survelliance and a wide range of extraneous powers, to do so.”

There you have it, in black and white. Green Brigade are targeted, surveilled and policed in the same way as potential suicide bombers would be. Confirming the recent Phil Mac G story. Absolutely extraordinary own goal by the forces of reaction.

Been down in Dublin recently chief and there was a sense of revolution in the air.The working-class(not even sure if that is the correct term as like in Glasgow and Belfast, there is no work) folk have been preyed upon(as always),from all directions – and it seems to me that they have had enough of it.

The only sad thing that i noticed was a degree of racism has crept into the equation as well.I wouldn’t comment on that issue as i witnessed just as many poor foreign people as i did native Dubs.

Also,i seen something that i completely agree with – The Green Flag is being flown once again,in place of the tricolour.Personally,i would ditch the tricolour myself and replace it with the original.

As for a change – it will always be the same – working class folk will fight and die, then greedy politicians will exploit them, and get rich on the back of their blood and tears. And it will be same as it ever was for the poor and deprived.

There was never any Celtic Tiger in West Belfast, just limbo, same old same old.I would also argue that there was never any Celtic Tiger in Dublin’s North Inner-City – just more alcohol and narcotics, and just more exploitation of the weak, downtrodden underclass.

I always held this view – To see a mirror of any trouble in Ireland,ALWAYS look at the opinions of the Glasgow Irish – for it is they whom will call the truth. If the Glasgow Irish support the Sinn Fein, then so shall i,and if the Glasgow Irish see fit to reject the Sinn Fein, then who am i to argue with them?

Remember this, and this is my main point – the Glasgow Irish were flying The Green Flag twenty years ago – the same flag that has just recently began to appear on the streets of Dublin.

When were you last in Glasgow my friend?

Maybe there are still some pockets of support for the Sinn Fein there, but last time i was there…

As for the racism in Dublin,or anywhere else for that matter – it’s just a blame game, and i mean this – i don’t know what world you inhabit, but in the real world – if you haven’t got a pot to pish in,nor a windy to throw it out of,and you see somebody different, nationality wise,or even of different colour, living the dream,in your city – well,it’s understandable that some of the natives will ask the question – how come,or wtf? Do you get it?

And it is nonsense, because the poor were always poor and the poor were always exploited – years and years before a Polish person,or an African person set foot in the country.

If there is no working/underclass folk to exploit, then there are no rich or wealthy – simple as that. And as i have already stated – i witnessed just as many “foreign” people struggling to get by,as i did “native” people.

Not so sure about the English though, they are a Germanic people are they not? Anglo/Saxon and all that there?

It’s more a mindset though Margaret,i think? Irish and Scottish are almost identical, despite the sectarian tripe.I read a recent survey in an Irish newspaper, and the question was asked – “If you were not Irish, which nationality would you prefer to be?” And something like 95% of those questioned, answered that they would like to be Scottish!! Ffs! Most Irish folk are oblivious to the anti-Irish racism that is widespread in Scotland.

I would say this though, and i will probably get hauled over the coals for it – one religion is more compassionate than the other, more forgiving than the fire and brimstone Scottish mongeral. Who knows? Each individual is different.

Last point,i would say that Irish people, and Africans are very similar in their ways – and i know that both these people have had issues with one another,so to speak – mainly because at the bottom of the ladder they were competing, and conflicts arose, mainly in the USA.

As a great English actor once said:”What is an Irishman, but a Nigger turned inside out!”
