Fine-tuning Tommy Burns methods

Almost exactly 10 years after Celtic fans alleged Porto’s adherence to the rules was less than faithful, when they won the Uefa Cup after extra time, their creative genius, Deco, failed a drugs test a substance used to mask performance-enhancing substances were found in his blood.

Is anyone surprised?

Congratulations to the Celtic under-20 team on securing league and cup double, the fourth consecutive season Celtic youths have recorded this achievement.  John Kennedy and Stevie Frail’s operation is years ahead of what was previously known as their domestic competition.

Celtic have been fine-tuning youth development since Tommy Burns returned from Amsterdam all those years ago with new strategies, some of which are still being used.  The cream graduate as Champions League players, but Celtic are pretty much running elite-level youth development in Scotland, a fact made clear when you look at the enormous number of Celtic training academy graduates earning a living across the rest of the league.

It used to be the case that Celtic wasted young talent.  Perceived wisdom was “Go to Aberdeen or Dundee United, they’ll turn you into a player”.  The opposite is now true.

  3. Hearts will go into administration at some time it seems. Either they lose 18 points now, meaning almost certain relegation, or they will start next season 14 or 15 points behind.

Thanks to members of the Cawder CSC who answered my query last night about outfield players taking over in goal at Celtic Park. Just proves fellas that all the information you want isn’t necessarily on the Internet and you have to resort to the auld pub and proper Celtic supporters for the answers sometimes

  9. Fears for East End facilities after £44m hotel project wrangle

THE Commonwealth Games are at risk of losing part of their community legacy, SNP leaders warned after a £44million hotel, shopping and leisure complex for the East End was put on ice.

Already dubbed The Arena, the scheme was to be up and running next to Celtic Park by next summer, providing 400 jobs.

But the Evening Times revealed yesterday that the project had stalled as its private developer and the council blame each other for delays.

It was also tipped to be home to a new community hub for Dalmarnock.

Local SNP councillor Alison Thewliss said: “I am deeply concerned that a much-needed community facility for Dalmarnock residents could be put at risk, as well as the potential for local people to access jobs in the development.

“Most of the Dalmarnock facilities have been cleared for the Games – the Accord Centre, GP, and shops have gone. The well-used community centre is to be demolished in coming months.

“The council has known since the 2014 bid was approved that this site would need developed before the Games. For the whole thing to be up in the air at this late stage is embarrassing for the council and hugely disappointing for people.

“The council must act to resolve this now. People in Dalmarnock must have their own legacy from the Games.”

Graeme Hendry, leader of the SNP opposition on the city council, said: “Successful regeneration needs local facilities and supporting infrastructure, so the failure to deliver on this will leave us with a fantastic facility (the Emirates Arena and velodrome) isolated from the infrastructure it needs.”

Yesterday the Evening Times revealed the developer behind The Arena – Kevin Fawcett – had effectively put the scheme on hold.

Mr Fawcett said he could not begin to put up the entire complex, which includes a 160-room three-star hotel, without paperwork from the council saying the site, on the corner of Springfield Road and London Road, was free of contaminated land.

The council denied there was any contamination on the land and said it was not obliged to provide Mr Fawcett with documentation.

Dalmarnock Development Trust is planning the new community hub to replace its existing centre.

The Arena was seen as a highly likely site for this facility, which, sources said, appears unlikely to be built this financial year.

Nobody at the Trust was available for comment. Nor were Labour councillors George Redmond and Yvonne Kucuk, who represent the Calton ward.

Asked about The Arena as a home for the hub, a council spokesman said: “We understand this was only one of a number of sites being considered by the Trust.”

Better player (patrick mceleney)who left sunderland reserves because of coach, still with derry but dont think he has the drive james did. Fantastic talent thou.

  23. Genuine question for the Norn Iron contingent:

I’ve noticed that the media increasingly refer to the city of Derry as “Derry/Londonderry” which frankly sounds daft, but is presumably designed to be inoffensive to anyone. What do the residents call the city these days – is it still generally split according to one’s political/religious background?
