Football cannot look the other way on brain disease

298

The SFA’s impending ban on under-12s heading the ball in training is European football’s first step in reacting to the research into brain disease and death toll of former footballers from dementia.  The most comprehensive study into the subject, conducted at Glasgow University, found footballers more than three times more likely to die from degenerative brain disease than the rest of the population.

The problem for the game’s administrators is that it will take decades for the consequences of what is happening now in the game to be measurable.  Footballs are lighter than they were 40 years ago.  This may reduce the incidence of brain disease, but we will not know anytime soon.

The decision to exclude under-12s is arbitrary; there is no evidence that children under-12 are any more vulnerable than older children.  Conversely, we know they cannot fire the ball into the air with the same force.  It therefore seems unlikely this decision will have any impact on the health of football players, more it is an acceptance that, faced with scientific evidence, football needs to do something.

The game will change before this matter is finished.  Balls may become lighter or rules on heading could become complicated.  Research suggests that the genetic makeup of some people make them more prone to suffer degenerative brain disease following head trauma than others.  We could soon be able to find out which players have a genetic profile that makes them vulnerable from heading the ball.

There is plenty for the administrators, clubs and players’ unions to do in this area.  We have lost too many heroes to look the other way.

  1. He may have started out as Celtic fan . now he is a DD fan. Anything not to rock the boat. And keep the bonus money coming in. We have been cheated out of everything for decades. but Celtic said nothing. Kidded on it never happened and will do nothing to stop it happening for the rest of time

  2. Derby County charged by the EFL for exceeding permitted losses. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before we see the sfa pull Sevco into line too.

Scottish football clubs are equal but one club is more equal than others.

  3. That stand at Firhill is pretty good for rolling out a suitable message from the fans to the impotent suits in the directors box facing them.

I hope we take our chance to register our disgust as the SFA treat us with contempt again.

  4. I don’t believe the Sun report.Hannah is a Hun.We all knows that another offence after a Red,is another Red.We have all seen it happen at some time. Not in any report.Celtic will have copy.Huns will have a copy, and we all know they would have issued statement no.158,straight away,to take the heat of Alfie.

Why now?.If it is collusion, again the perpetrators are on a par with The Marx Brothers,in carrying it out.Farce, similar to Dougiegate. You could tow an oil rig through it.

If it is true, just where does that leave us?.God knows. Our Boards past form leaves me bereft of an hope of involvement.Hope springs eternal.

The CQN “report” on the third yellow card for Morelos confirms that the Celtic Board will do nothing on this subject.

There have been times, in the last few years, when I have questioned my support for Celtic, or rather, I have questioned whether the Celtic that I have held in my heart for over 60 years is the same entity that calls itself Celtic today.

Today is another one of these days. Sad.

  6. lets all do the huddle on

i honestly believe PL does not want to rock the boat with the SFA because it might not look good for his future ambitions with them or UEFA

to restate what i have said numerous times on here and elsewhere – the only show in town for a CEO of a PLC is their own remuneration and status

    everything else is window dressing

and our CEO is no different

its about whether folk are of the opinion that is enough for us to have the success we want, thats upto the individual to decide

  7. Philbhoy.

Other clubs won’t help us as far as the cheating goes.

When clubs play sevco decisions will go against them. When they play us decisions will go in their favour.

So in scottish football this is how decisions even themselves out over the course of a season.

    We are on our own.

  8. Celtic should not have to say anything about the punishment to other players. It’s the sfa’s job to step up, if they don’t do their job there should be an independent (outside scotland) panel set up to look into such issues.

I have no doubt any other governing body looking at some of the incidents would act accordingly. It does not take that long to review the behaviour that took place and to take action. A yellow card after the game for inciting violence having been sent off for 2 prior yellow card, aye ok champ.

The rule makers need checks and balances too and if they are not doing the job then they need replaced by others who will. Celtic would not need to address this if the sfa were doing its job. If I were celtic I would be loathed to step in cause then it becomes about them vs. us rather than the main issue which is poor govern of the game.

Ps if we have a compliance officer s/he should be writing a report about all significant incidents during a game and brought to task if there is any inconsistencies in that report I.e. s/he does not get to pick and choose which violent acts/ assaults s/he brings into the report rather it is his/ her job to bring all in and offer reason why action should/ should not be taking otherwise it’s a pick and mix. Also if action is taken at the time by referee that should not be the end of the matter. If it is clear that it’s worth reviewing again then it should be. The notion that a bad decision should be allowed to stand because it was seen during the game is stupid. If I got done with assault then the guy died would it be unfair to change the charge to murder? I know extreme example but there you go.

    Ditto

  10. IF…( Big IF)…Ref Clancy DID give Morelos a THIRD Yellow Card, and considering how Sevco have defended his behaviour….WHY did Sevco NOT “Appeal” against the third yellow card…on the grounds that he was only signalling that the game is over ?

Are we to believe that Sevco have decided not to defend their employee officially ?

    The rules clearly state

A5 Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures

Is a red card offence .

Now if we are to believe that Clancy gave morelos a yellow card for what Clancy must have taken the gesture to mean ,a throat cutting gesture ,what sort of gesture would merit a red card .

No one had even heard of the pathetic “in Columbia it means game over” pash.

So are we now to believe that Clancy and sevco are the only ones who knew if a player from Columbia makes a throat cutting gesture ,he means no harm .

I,m sorry but this complete and utter corruption has to be called out and investigated ,this is now beyond the pale .

This was how a Brechin player was punished earlier this season

    Three match ban for ‘Malky’

    [Wednesday, 11 March 2015 19:47]

malcolm stuart‘Loons’ defender Stuart Malcolm will sit out the club’s next three SPFL League One fixtures against Stranraer, Brechin City and Stirling Albion after his double sending off in last night’s defeat at Peterhead.

Stuart was shown a red card in the 69th minute by referee Kevin Graham for what was deemed violent conduct. This offence means an automatic two game ban.

However after the final whistle the match official advised Stuart and the club that he was issuing a second red card for an offensive gesture made towards the home support as the player left the field of play.

This offence brings with a further one match suspension.

A player from brechin gestures to opposing fans going off the pitch and gets a straight red card

Morelos of sevco gestures to opposing fans going off the pitch a gets a yellow

morelos grabs chrities jewels and nothing given

christie grabs morelos jewels and gets a two match ban

IS MORELOS OF SEVCO BEING TREATED DIFFERENTLY BY THE MIBs AND THE SFA

    too true he is

    corrupt to the core

  14. So Clancy books Morelos after the game. I’ll assume Morelos knows he’s been booked and tells rangers . I’ll also assume Clancy tells his bosses and the sfa are informed.

Why then do all of the above decide not to tell anyone else?
