Football doesn’t allow you to pick and choose

339

Europe?  A week ago I was all for it; there has been a lot of learning since.  We are not ready to make an impact on the latter stages of the Conference League or any other Uefa competition.  For me, the focus of this week is all about Easter Road on Sunday.  Football, however, does not allow you to pick and choose.

If Ange rested much of his first team against Bodo/Glimt tomorrow and suffered an even worse result than in the first leg, a new avenue of consequences would open up.  You cannot prepare property for an important game by losing a few days earlier.

Celtic must go out in the frozen north and give a professional performance, preparations for Easter Road will wait a few days.

    This is what you posted:

How often have we seen a good result away from home in Europe being followed by dropped points domestically?

Eyes on the prize, and the only prize worth bothering about this season is the league.

I appreciate that logic is not your friend, but you implied that usually when Celtic win away in Europe they drop points the following weekend. You then say “eyes on the prize”. I infer from all this that you’d prefer Celtic to lose on Thursday so that your first assertion doesn’t come to pass. Otherwise why would you mention it?

    As I say – LOGIC.

  2. Ernie,

Agreed nationalism can be an ideology.

However it is factual that Mr Putin was a willing tool of the Communist state machine and now he is leader of what many would consider a fascist regime.

    The analogy seems substantiated.

Thanks for that link. An interesting article indeed …. unlike the fairly predictable response of most of the UK media.

This part, though, made me think of a certain Party often mentioned on here :-))

“…in order to expand the base of support, began to mindlessly stimulate, encourage nationalist sentiments, play on them, promising their potential supporters whatever they wished”.

The point is Putin was never a ‘communist’ He was a Russian nationalist and an opportunist. So his actions are hardly evidence for your claim.

Obviuously up to you and ernie how you debate this matter but I read ernie`s post as saying that we shouldn`t prepare for Thursday`s game in a way that lessens out chances of victory on Sunday I don`t see that as saying ` Let`s lose this game`. I see it as saying `Let`s prioritise Sunday`s game.`

The populist nationalism certainly has echoes of what’s happening here, particularly with the false narratives designed to engender outrage, resentment and hostility.

We however are fortunate in that Scotland is to wee, too weak and too geographically isolated to ever threaten a neighbouring country so that serves to curtail the worst excesses, but it would be naive and arrogant to assume that without those constraints we wouldn’t be following a similar trajectory.

“…in order to expand the base of support, began to mindlessly stimulate, encourage nationalist sentiments, play on them, promising their potential supporters whatever they wished”.

Ian Paisley references that nationalist sentiments below

“I think the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom ought to have spoken about this on Thursday evening. I think he should not have shut up about it until the issue is resolved. I think they are his responsibilities,” Paisley said.

When you have a crisis, a constitutional crisis, through a prism of a divided community, which is what Northern Ireland is, you create suspicions and concerns unless those matters are properly addressed.

Paisley added that Johnson’s party was acting in the interests of English nationalism rather than unionism:

There is a fear that the Conservative and Unionist Party, which governs this nation, is actually a nationalist party. An English nationalist party. That it is not concerned about a border in the Irish Sea but is concerned about a Red Wall on this island, the mainland island, and that’s what keeps them up every single day. If that is their only concern than that government is betraying the union and the unionist people.

  8. Ernie,

We both don’t know Putin’s inner thoughts.

What we do know is this : He was an intelligence officer in the KGB for 16 years. He was also a card carrying member of the Communist party until it ceased to exist.

For such a proliferous poster you are stretching credulity that you were only a lurker.

    Straight question then.

Have you posted under any other name(s)

    Yours??

    SFTB??

    Corkcelts??

You see, I’ve got one name as I only have one email address as I don’t have a phone.

So I’m failing to understand where your going here??

    Where are you going??

Where do you want to go??

If some other poster reflects or is free to have a mind of their own and maybe now and again agrees with something that I post, then good on them, I say.

Kojo was a poster a long time ago on here and he was a, pile on, attractor as there where, and are still numerous posters on here even now, who deem themselves as being, too precious, to be opposed, or contradicted, imho.

Maybe your one of those, precious posters, given your dispensing of instant justice as it where, as you see it, regarding me as you are giving me the impression that you think I’m not who I say I am and your entitled to think what you like, that doesn’t mean your correct.

    Take care. 👍

  13. I note the B Glint manager is trying to scare the bejasus out of the Celtic players by saying they face the worst conditions in living memory when they visit the Arctic Circle for a football match tomorrow night. He could of added to beware of the Abominable Snowman, Bigfoot and marauding wolf packs while he was at it.

No doubt Celtic missed their chance last week in benign conditions in a packed stadium on the green sward of Celtic Park. I suspect Celtic didn’t do proper homework on the Norwegian outfit probably because they were in close season while our opposition spent all their downtime going into forensic detail on the Hoops.

Heard a discussion on radio recently that the quality of some plastic pitches is very good and I imagine the Norwegians with their Arctic weather

would have the best. Hope the Hoops get the win tomorrow night and all return healthy for Sunday.

The contrast between the SNP and other nationalist movements and parties is striking, argues Elliott Green. The SNP explicitly promotes civic nationalism, claiming that membership in the Scottish nation is to be defined not by blood but by voluntary attachment to Scotland and participation in its civic life. This has paid off, with high support from ethnic minorities for independence.

Gerry Adams maybe wants to brush up on what Connolly and Lenin had to say about oppressed and oppressor nations in relation to nationalism.

Unless of course he regards Scotland and Wales as being oppressed in the way that Ireland was.

In which case I’d love to know how he explains the saltires flying on the Shankhill.

  21. No matter the conditions in the artic tmrw the players need not fear a giant snake coming on to the pitch

That wee bit at the top the Eddie Howe bit I call it had a wee story today. It’s the only time I have ever clicked it. South America I think a Python? Slithered on to the pitch 😲
