Football doesn’t allow you to pick and choose

Europe?  A week ago I was all for it; there has been a lot of learning since.  We are not ready to make an impact on the latter stages of the Conference League or any other Uefa competition.  For me, the focus of this week is all about Easter Road on Sunday.  Football, however, does not allow you to pick and choose.

If Ange rested much of his first team against Bodo/Glimt tomorrow and suffered an even worse result than in the first leg, a new avenue of consequences would open up.  You cannot prepare property for an important game by losing a few days earlier.

Celtic must go out in the frozen north and give a professional performance, preparations for Easter Road will wait a few days.

  3. I don’t get involved in ‘slanging latches’ on here, it is not what I perceive the blog to be about. Just a very quick comment – there is an old adage – ” don’t give it if you can’t take it”

If you set up to deliver a constant stream of bombast day after day, you surely can’t complain if you get ‘a little tickle’ in return “once in a blue moon’

  4. The 3-2 game away to Betis (currently 3rd in La Liga) showed that sticking to our way of playing even with a team ful of second string players can reap rewards in the most difficult circumstances we face.

We dont change our style under Ange, the principle has served us well up to now.

  5. ohits

Excellent, exactly what I would do but Ange won’t and he is entitled to do what he wants.

I’m not talking about throwing games, it’s a matter of priority. The team have earned a shot at the

title after being behind. Let’s give it our best shot.

  6. Even if we somehow got through this tie, we’re not winning the trophy. Why risk injuries to key players on a plastic pitch ahead of an absolutely massive game on Sunday at a venue which has been a very problematic one for us in recent seasons? Play the B team tomorrow. The league is everything this year. I don’t want to think about the consequences of not winning it.

  7. While we’re talking about shooting from outside the box, I’d like our captain to practice this art. I’m a huge fan of Callum but this is a weakness in his game which could easily be addressed.

  8. Watching the 3-0 game again.

I think we rode our luck at the first goal.

One sevco player fouled another sevco player.

Should have been a free kick.

    And a yellow card.

  9. What suprises me, but it probably shouldn’t is that for a blog that it’s fair to say attracts what has been labelled before “The Grey Brigade” (not by me I would add) that with that life experience, where you expect more wisdom, in contrast, the bickering shows the emotional intelligence of children.

The blog isn’t a diary either.

  10. I’m not sure I buy into tomorrow night effecting us one way or another for Sunday.

We’ve become accustomed to seeing Celtic return to winning ways domestically after a humbling night in Europe.

The huns went to Tannadice last Sunday after their best result in their European history and dropped two points.

There’s no more talk of European quarter finals, last week I wanted us to finish the tie at Celtic Park such was my confidence.

Last week was sobering. We’re a side that concede three per game in Europe so a high scoring entertainer tomorrow is the best we can realistically hope for. Ange’s first season in Europe is coming to an end but we’ve plenty to be getting on with.

  11. The satisfaction of winning a Euro game away from home, co-efficient points, prize money (if applicable), and a boost in confidence to carry over to the next domestic game. Celtic may not overcome the deficit but I certainly want us to win this game. Will be delighted if we get through.

Play every game to win, every competition. Otherwise, what’s the point ?

We actually lost the Betis game , as we did the Leverkausen game.

I know. I said can; 2-1 up with twenty minutes to go against that team showed what’s possible. Losing by a single goal to both teams away from home shows what’s possible if we stick to our guns.

  13. Anyway back to the football I would say start with or strongest team. We like to try to come out the traps swiftly anyway so do the same try and get back into the tie.

If we don’t look like we can achieve a comeback. Put subs on and think smart about the closing part of the game in terms of energy.

Don’t think any manager will admit to doing this but absolutely do preserve their players for the remaining parts of the season.

Early goals and it’s a different prospect.

Ange doesn’t do dead rubbers so I would expect him to go all out to get us through tomorrow night. Reckon his pride was a bit wounded last week. Better performace without doubt hopefully.

I still think with that team we would have a chance , Scales , O,Riley and Taylor up the left , all left footed all interchangeable , same on the right , just go out and give it our best shot. i know Betis played a weakened team , Ange played the fringe players and still won. That team I put up is full of first team players , although not all first choice. HH

  16. The only changes I’d make are: I’d play Bitton for Rogic, a back four of Ralson, CCV, Starfelt and JJ and start with GG.

So three changes of personnel and one change of position. See how things are progressing up to the 60 minute mark or thereabouts.

  17. OHITS @ 1:02

I think the team you list makes perfect sense, although I would also mothball CCV, given ALL the circumstances. It is not surrender, rather, a pragmatic approach to a tricky situation with glaring pitfalls. Imagine returning home with a 2-1 victory and Calmac & Jota injured- doesn’t bear thinking about.

Risking ‘falling between two stools is reckless’, when we could be sitting in an armchair till Sunday.

Ultimately it’s the manager’s decision and I will support him – he deserves nothing less!!!

  20. In my opinion we should always play our strongest team for the occasion if only to be fair to the travelling support [however small]

  22. My friends in Celtic,

We have circa 31 players who can play in the first team at some point ( We have around 13 players loaned out )

We are rapidly approaching the business end of the season and our injury list is diminishing.

Of course we can put out a first rate side against a Norwegian team and the same goes for the Hibs game.

Let’s look at the Bodo Glimt game as an opportunity not a hindrance. A great opportunity for rotation and a great opportunity for some players to establish themselves for the league run in and possibly / hopefully a European run in.

Our manager doesn’t contemplate defeatism, surrender, submission, capitulation, raising a white flag, throwing in the towel,, yielding, or giving up.

    And neither should we.

  23. Let’s hope our travelling supporters have deeeeeeep pockets or a platinum credit card.

  24. Regardless of what we think Ange will do his own thing tomorrow night,

but you have to think the odds are heavily stacked against us – considering they beat us 3 – 1 in our own back yard,

wonder how Bodo Glint would get on if they played in the SPFL…

personally I think the 2 horse race would become a 3 horse race,
