Forster, Samaras and Perth

1353

When I researched yesterday’s article (yes, research does happen sometimes) I was far from encouraged.  Udinese had an impeccable home record and Snr Di Natale is one of Europe’s irresistible strikers at the moment.

We didn’t manage to resist Di Natale but he will remember Fraser Forster for a few years.  We have been fortunate to see a few great goalkeeping performances in Europe in the last decade but last night Fraser was second perhaps only to David Marshall that night in Barcelona.  That last minute penalty save against Hearts on Saturday has moved the player onto a new platform.

Udinese had a good 20 minute spell when they looked every inch the team joint top of the Italian league but they were on the rack in the closing stages of the game.  Cha DuRi has had an eventful Europa League on the road this season.  He was a bit unfortunate at the Udinese goal but completely out of luck when he twisted his body mid-air to volley off the post.

Watching Georgios Samaras last night was a lesson in how complex a game football can be.  This is a player who could not hold down a place in the SPL last season, yet playing in a different position he had top-flight defenders throwing themselves at him in order to inhibit progress.

There is still work to be done, but the return of three first choice defenders will enhance the team considerably.  The most pleasing thing about last night came after the game; Fraser Forster’s focus was immediately on St Johnstone.  It’s all about Perth now.

Issue 5 of CQN Magazine will be out soon.  Hard copies will be available direct, at a considerably reduced cost from our current Magcloud arrangement and with a fast delivery turnaround.  Details soon.

    Ciao —–

I haven’t seen /heard or read so much as a comment about the flare in the Italian media .

Seemingly of no news value here.

Italian media have been much more interested in talking about how good Celtic were in the first half.

The Italian media have been much more interested in talking about how good Forster, Samaras and Forrest were.

Guidolin , the Udinese Manager was fulsome in his praise of Celtic . He singled out Samaras , Forster and Forrest for special praise.

Guidolin said he had been forced to change his midfield in order to deal with Samaras.—- ” I didn’t want to play Pinzi and Isla but we had to shut Samaras down ”

Guidolin ranted about a useless Referee who had been bad for both teams.

Most media outlets gave the Man of The Match accolade to Forster .

It is Good to hear this, Celtic were Magnificent in the 1st half and Udinese were Fantastic in the 2nd half. It was a great cup game between 2 up and coming teams. We had great performances from all our players and Udinese played a super game in the 2nd half, that Asamoah lad is a real quality player, I was hugely impressed by him.

    Thanks to your reply.

I left Aul Scotia in the 70s and the sports press at that time, as far as I could tell, was pretty impartial and focussed on the games. Of course, when there was trouble – and there was plenty – it was reported in a responsible way: it wasn’t over the top and, again as far as I could tell, there was no favour given to any wrong-doers, no matter what colours they wore.

Over the years on trips back “home”, I noticed the change in reporting, gradually drifting downhill, gradually becoming more and more sensationalist, the papers gradually becoming comics.

I remember being embarrassed having to explain newspaper headlines to my bi-lingual children. They had learned English but couldn’t understand the news: almost every headline was a play on words!

However, bad puns are one thing: what is happening today is a national “embarrassment” and “disgrace”, as one old time reported would no doubt have said.

I agree completely that the club should have demanded an apology from the BBC producer who was responsible for lying about our support singing songs wrongly described as ‘sectarian’ during the Scottish Cup final.

When you state: “The differences in how Rangers and Celtic get treated by the media, SFA, Police etc is now incredible” you make valid points, although there is nothing particularly new about any of this.

Getting banners out and singing songs is not going to get any debate going. Who do you expect to debate the issues? By your own observations, the media, SFA, police, and you could add politicians to the list, all have an agenda against our club – so seeking confrontation is going to damage all of us.

What is required more than ever is common sense.

You can rest assured the Huns will not refrain from chanting ‘offensive’ songs about Fenians etc

Lets see if there are any arrests, fans reported to the SPL or complaints made by our own board about their conduct

    I won’t hold my breath

  13. Mr Scott was of course divisional commander before a certain Mr Smith and was his boss..

  14. Stein – there is no common sense – none. We are not allowed to have any debate. I have been listening to Radio Scotland and EVERY time the new bill was discussed the presenters asked those against the bill if they felt that sectarianism was wrong. This country is a disgrace – it has created a new law to persecute celtic supporters and catholics.

The only way forward is to bring to their doors and fight back – or we could die of a thousand cuts and attacks.

Corporate Celtic needs to die – its a corruption of the ideals of Celtic and has to go

    Yes ——-Asamoah.

Great player . Astonishing pace .

Italian media have him going to Manchester United. Udinese have not denied those claims..

One more of Udinese’s find them , buy them cheap , develop them and sell them for lots players.

  16. The Scottish media will never give us equal treatment with them. It’s as simple as that.

Last night on the STV news there was a report on Hearts’ financial situation: non payment of wages, possible sale, etc. No mention was made of any other Scottish club that may have financial problems, e.g. court cases, sums arrested, etc.

Can you imagine if we had been taken to court by even one firm of solicitors? Or had even one former employee suing the club?

They need to sell more papers as most newspapers are now nearing the point of becoming unsustainable. Bad news about Celtic sells newspapers. And if the team happens to be winning, to be playing well in Europe, then something needs to be done to create a negative.

Can you imagine if Rangers had secured a draw against an Italian opponent? The press would have been full of talk of plucky resistance, heroic players and brilliant tactics.

Instead Neil Lennon is asked about banners and fans rather than players and tactics.

  17. Ten Men Won The League on

Samuel Eto’o has been banned for 15 matches by the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) for his role in a players’ strike.

The strike followed a row over bonuses after a tournament in Morocco in November and led to the cancellation of a friendly against Algeria.

The Cameroon captain, 30, has 10 days to appeal against the ban.

    Vice-captain Enoh Eyong received a two-match ban, while Tottenham’s Benoit Assou-Ekotto was fined $1,980 (£1,276).

The decision was published on the federation’s website on Friday.

The federation said Eto’o was banned for “violating the internal regulations of the national team relating to loyalty and obligation of participating in a match”.

Cameroon begin their bid to reach the 2013 Nations Cup finals against Guinea Bissau on 29 February, with the return leg of the tie on 17 June.

They start their quest to reach the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with a match on 1 June against DR Congo.

Eto’o is the most decorated player in African history having won the European Champions League three times during his time at Barcelona and Inter Milan.

He has been named African Footballer of the Year four times and won an Olympic gold medal with Cameroon in 2000 and the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002.

Eto’o moved to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in August 2011, becoming one of the best paid sportsmen in the world

  18. The theory that the Scottish press print negative stories about Celtic in order to sell more newspapers seems a strange one to me. Why not have a more balanced and honest approach and thereby appeal to readers of all persuasions?

    There’s obviously more to it.

What you have stated above is the reason we have to be sensible about what we do and use common sense on how we deal with it. Because there is no right of reply, attempting a confrontational approach is only going to benefit our detractors. So bringing it to their door is going to achieve nothing other than further bad publicity and possibly sanctions for Celtic and everyone involved in our club.
