Forster, Samaras and Perth

1353

When I researched yesterday’s article (yes, research does happen sometimes) I was far from encouraged.  Udinese had an impeccable home record and Snr Di Natale is one of Europe’s irresistible strikers at the moment.

We didn’t manage to resist Di Natale but he will remember Fraser Forster for a few years.  We have been fortunate to see a few great goalkeeping performances in Europe in the last decade but last night Fraser was second perhaps only to David Marshall that night in Barcelona.  That last minute penalty save against Hearts on Saturday has moved the player onto a new platform.

Udinese had a good 20 minute spell when they looked every inch the team joint top of the Italian league but they were on the rack in the closing stages of the game.  Cha DuRi has had an eventful Europa League on the road this season.  He was a bit unfortunate at the Udinese goal but completely out of luck when he twisted his body mid-air to volley off the post.

Watching Georgios Samaras last night was a lesson in how complex a game football can be.  This is a player who could not hold down a place in the SPL last season, yet playing in a different position he had top-flight defenders throwing themselves at him in order to inhibit progress.

There is still work to be done, but the return of three first choice defenders will enhance the team considerably.  The most pleasing thing about last night came after the game; Fraser Forster’s focus was immediately on St Johnstone.  It’s all about Perth now.

Issue 5 of CQN Magazine will be out soon.  Hard copies will be available direct, at a considerably reduced cost from our current Magcloud arrangement and with a fast delivery turnaround.  Details soon.

The facts as I see them are this we have a young team

will bring an even better balance to this team.

We have an international defender joining in January

I do play the team game, none of us can win this on our own, Neil knows that too. I was dissapointed with what Neil Lennon said which was very similar to what our new chairman said and what our ubiquitous CEO said. If you didn’t know better you’d think that is all they had to talk about on the plane home.

  6. PF ayr, maybe big Jock and MON would have had a board that would’ve defended the good name of the club and the support before capitulating.

Then if that had happened maybe the eejit would not have felt the need to make a mug of himself. But then none of us are perfect… or are we?

The tax office here put debt collectors onto me after they had agreed I had no tax bill to pay. They deducted what they thought I owed them prior to getting the debt collectors involved. I got my accountant and lawyer onto the tax office, they came back and agreed that I had no outstanding debt and that they would refund me what they illegally took at the end of the tax year. No apolpgy for the duress, nothing. I have since their dated letter had another demand from debt collectors for unpaid bills to the tax office. I don’t want to go to war with them but last year they took 70k off me. A lot more than they were ever due.

Maybe we should transport our tax office to Scotland.

I’ve just read the full transcript of Lawwell’s press statement. It seems clear from it that he does NOT hold the Green Brigade accountable for what was done in Udinese.

And for me, his comments are bang on. And everyone KNOWS I would rather this man was not at Celtic Park, so this is not me being pro-board. I think he has said everything right here.

““It is a very small, rogue element. It is not the Green Brigade. It is a handful of people who for some reason think this is the right thing to do. It embarrasses the club. It embarrasses the vast, vast majority of our supporters, who would be sitting there last night.

“We are going to stop it. Even amid that hardcore of Celtic fans coming out here to Italy in December, it is a very small element. I don’t know what their motivation is, but we are going to stop it. These people cannot love Celtic, given what they have inflicted on us.

“This could well be the tipping point. People are sick of it. In 2003, our four supporters’ associations stood at Celtic Park and collected the UEFA Fair Play award. But now, eight years later we get this, and these banners. It’s just not right. It’s not Celtic.

“This is a rogue element that has infiltrated our support, with whatever objective, but it is a very small minority.

“The other thing is, last night was about Celtic from the SPL playing against Udinese, and it was fantastic. The unfortunate thing is that all this has overshadowed it.

“The eyes of UEFA were already on Celtic. There is no logic to this. If it was logical, it would be easy to sort out.”

  18. Fifa have threatened to ban Switzerland from world football if a transfer ban on Sion is not enforced by 13 January.

Sion lost their fight to be allowed back into the Europa League after a Uefa ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The club were banned for fielding ineligible players against Celtic.

“Should this deadline not be respected, the Swiss FA will be automatically suspended from 14 January 2012 onwards,” said Fifa.

“The executive decided to give a final deadline of 13 January 2012 to the Swiss FA to enforce the registration ban imposed on Sion by the Fifa Dispute Resolution Chamber and confirmed by the Swiss Federal Court and to sanction the attitude of the club repeatedly trying to circumvent this decision in a legally abusive manner.

Sion owner Christian Constantin challenged Uefa’s transfer ban “As a consequence, all matches in which the relevant players participated shall be declared forfeit or three points shall be deducted respectively.”

A transfer embargo was imposed on Sion over the signing of Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary but the club proceeded to sign six players the following transfer.

Five of these players took part in Sion’s 3-1 aggregate win against Celtic in the Europa League play-off round.

However, upon complaint from Celtic, Sion were thrown out of the competition and Celtic took the Swiss club’s place in Group I.

All Group I fixtures have been completed, with Atletico Madrid and Udinese progressing to the last 32 and Celtic and Rennes bowing out of the tournament.

Should the Swiss FA fail to sanction Sion, Basle could miss out on taking part in the Champions League last 16 and Switzerland’s international friendly with Argentina may be cancelled.

Fifa has now ordered the Swiss Football Association to sanction Sion or risk Switzerland being excluded from all football – which would mean Basle missing out on taking part in the last 16 of the Champions League and the national team missing out on an encounter with Argentina in February.

In the aftermath of the CAS ruling, Sion announced plans to take their case to the Swiss Federal Court and then the European Court.

Wearing a Celtic scarf round your neck or pulling a jersey over your head, is not a badge of immunity.

It is a symbol of the club and should command a sense of responsibility from those who wear it.

Neil Lennon has put his life on the line to build a Celtic team worthy of the name and reputation.

He doesn’t deserve his efforts to be undermined by mindless morons, bedecked in Celtic colours.

He had every right to be angry and condemn the anti-Celtic actions.

“All Neil had to say was… no comment.”

That’s the crux there. He obviously WANTED to make his point known. That alone should let us all know how he viewed the banner. I personally have no problem whatsoever with the Celtic Manager having a go if he believes it is warranted.

He certainly takes enough flak at times from the support to earn his right of reply!
