From a green jumper to a season ticket

924

It’s one of those obscure football facts which appears more likely to be an urban myth, but when he jogs out onto Celtic Park on Sunday the proof will be there for all to see: Chelsea captain John Terry is a Celtic fan.  I’ve heard many wide ranging reasons why people become attached to the club, not everyone was born into it as an accident of paternal heritage, some of us made our own way there.

I know one Ulsterman, from the loyalist tradition, who has lived in Scotland for decades, and, along with his friends, is a Celtic supporter.  One season ticket holder told me he started shouting for Celtic as an infant, to tease his Rangers supporting father, but one day the teasing developed into the acquisition of a green jumper, an unusual occurrence in the family home.  A bridge had been crossed, soon posters were on the bedroom wall, a Celtic Subbutteo team was bought and after a few years, a Celtic top made its appearance.

There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of great stories like these.

Sunday’s #19 Legenda’ game will be a chance for some of us to reminisce about the days when Pierre, Lubo, Jorge, Bobo, Tommy Boyd, the man himself, Stiliyan Petrov and, of course, the Swede, graced Celtic Park every week.  It will be a rare chance to see Martin O’Neill on the on the touchline, perhaps without bouncing up and down.  Well done to Carlos Cuellar for pitching up, even if he has to play the inevitable pantomime villain.

Monies raised will go towards Stiliyan’s Foundation and to stock a food bank, which will open in Glasgow this month with the aim of alleviating food poverty. Which takes us back to where we started.

Enjoy your day.

  1. One thing is for sure, if we draw Sevco at home in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup it ain’t going to be on the season book.

Any other lower league team and it probably will be.

How much would PL charge for this game?

I read the Glenn Gibbons piece earlier – very informative.

Especially the bit about the police investigation into the Super Bus revealing no football fans were involved in the arson.

Apparently this came out a week ago. First I’ve heard about it.

That article is probably the reason why the howling and barking started early today.

On a more serious note, Spence’s plight is something every right thinking person should be aware of and support forthcoming. For too long the lies and distortion promulgated by them has been allowed.

Read the Chris Sutton Article,he just loves the Celtic, always thought a very clever player,Centre half,Midfield, and the one We signed him for centre forward, and his tremendous link up with the K of Kings.

Always thought he did not have a liking for THEM.did not make him a bad person,if you catch my drift

  8. Goldstar. So hypothetically should we get a team assuming they are still in competition by then u are already criticising one man at the club for maybe charging a price? Id hope that man too busy to get involved in things like that. Mr lawell should get himself a white cat to stroke to pull off the bond villain look that so many on here have him down as. Celtic fans love gettin together for occasions like tomorrow an rightfully so but when it comes to actual backing team on ordinary basis more of a struggle.

In Neil’s dreams Pete had a plan, an’ Teemu Puuki was the man

He’ll work so hard throughout the game, to score the goals and bring us fame

    And that’s no bad

Teemu Pukki is our man, he’ll score the goals an cheer the fans

    Pukki, Pukki, Pukki, Teemu Pukki

  10. If the board thought none of us would turn up to watch the Sevco huns they would have adopted an entirely different attitude and strategy in dealing with them.

I went through a period I couldn’t afford to go to see celtic with my kids.

So now being in the position to go again…I’m sure as hell a reincarnated zombie team will stop me now.HH

Was in Shaun Rankin’s other restaurant the Ormer last week. Total rip off!

  18. Chris Sutton stated his intention when arrived and duly delivered. Also stated what everyone else was thinking but not brave enough to say re the lie dooners.

On the point of possibly drawing The Rangers in a cup match, I hope it never happens. Upsets can happen in cup games and it would be like 1966 if the unthinkable ever happened.

Regardless, my tickets would be purchased but the 3 seats remain unoccupied.

  19. Billy Bhoy supports wee Oscar on

Spensey is wasting his time trying to educated them. We all know that Ally McOist’s Rangers are the football equivalent of Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers – little more than a sad tribute act – but still over 50% of Scots think relegation and liquidation are the same thing!

One of my colleagues had the £1600 club deck debenture and even the receipt of the “Dear John” letter from the Newco telling him that it’s not being honoured won’t shake his belief system that he’s still watching the same team. He lamely tried to say that his money went to the Holding Co. I pointed out that they wrote the cheque to RFC. SDM then took all their money and blew it on Torre Andre Flo and Co. That pained him a wee bit!

While he had no answer to anything I said he was adamant it’s still Rangers.

    Incredible.

I am of the age that I saw Jim Baxter quite a few times and in my opinion he wouldnt have got into the Celtic team at that time.Rangers sold him to Sunderland and he didnt do all that well there he came back to Ibrokes for a second time but did not really hold down a first team spot.H.H.

To buy a ticket and not to go, to deprive another Celtic Supporter (possibly of lesser means) the opportunity of seeing the game and Supporting his/her team by his/her presence… would it be unfair to label such a stance as… spiteful?

if you can enjoy it go for it – there will be tens of thousands who share your view.

There are people whom I love dearly who will stop at nothing to watch the Celts. Even if that means having to pay to watch a team that don’t deserve to be in the draw for cup games or league matches. I can just about understand that they are mainly motivated by watching the hoops….but also feel that if we must play sevco then they might as well enjoy humping them daft. ..or dafter..

I disagree with them, a lot, but will I still love them and respect their view
