From Stein to Deila in the League Cup

667

Jock Stein won his first five League Cups as Celtic manager (no pressure, Ronny) but in the 43 years since we’ve won the trophy only eight times, including yesterday.

There has been a bit of chat that the Treble is a bit easier since Rangers were liquidated, but, if you know your history, you’ll know that’s not really borne out by the facts.

We’ve won three of the last 10 League Cups and lost to Rangers once but the six other defeats in that period have come at the hands of the likes of Morton, St Mirren and Kilmarnock.  What’s more, Falkirk, Hearts (twice) and Morton all knocked us out at Celtic Park.  We haven’t actually lost an away game in the League Cup for over a decade.  25 of our 35 defeats since Stein’s five-in-a-row have come to teams other than Rangers.

Here is a list of our eventual outcomes in the League Cup, winners or those who eliminated us:

2014-15 Winners
Morton
St Mirren
Kilmarnock
Rangers
Hearts
2008-09 Winners
Hearts

At the 40th anniversary of Lisbon I wrote about the 1965-66 until 1969-70 period.  Jock Stein won 12 of the 15 domestic trophies available, five Leagues, five League Cups and two Scottish Cups.  We also won and lost a European Cup Final, while beating champions from Italy, Portugal France and England.

That we went on to win nine-in-a-row disguised the fact that the real glory era ended in 1970.  The last four title winning seasons were not characterised by beating anyone substantial in Europe (notwithstanding the fact that we reached two European Cup semis) and a series of capitulations in League Cup Finals. The downwards trajectory from beating Leeds at Hampden and finishing fifth in the league in 1978 is evident.

Two inferences can be drawn:

Winning trebles is incredibly difficult.  One slip, one bad tackle leading to a red card, and you are up against it.

Teams who aspire to genuine historical greatness never switch off.

We have a ‘never switch off’ manager. No more Mortons, Falkirks or Raith Rovers’.

Invite them in. Welcome them with refreshments and prawn sandwiches. Give them excellent facilities and seats with a clear view. Allow them considerable access to players and staff.

Permit them to see first hand the winning of points, the hob bobbing with Europe’s Elite, the shinning glint of trophies and the happy People of Celtic.

  2. By SydneyTim’s reckoning we should never have beaten Barcelona.

If his vision of how PL treats the football side of things us correct. He actually has the same outlook as PL. We spend far more on players than any other team, therefore we should always win.

  3. Oh dear, never mind….

ALEX McLEISH will hold crunch talks with Racing Genk chiefs this week after failing to make the play-offs and admitted his time in Belgium could be over.

The former Rangers and Scotland boss was hoping to take Genk into the play-off spots, but lost to Standard Liege at the weekend to end their hopes.

And the ex-Aston Villa and Birmingham City manager McLeish will discover this week whether his adventure is over in Belgium, after taking over the club in August.

I wouldn’t ban proper sports journalists.

Unfortunately they are few and far between in the SMSM.

The so-called quality Scottish newspapers, not to mention Beeb Scotland, are rapidly going the same way as the DR and Sun.

I don’t see point in inviting unwanted guests to our party.

    Morning all.

Watched a programme about Ewan McGREGOR going around the world on a bike yesterday. Too lazy to learn even a little Russian (essential), the chump proceeded to condemn bear hunters who need money to feed their family. Grrr.

  12. Stephenofderby. I have never advocated that we spend huge sums of cash and end up like the zombies

I have said if we sell a player for 10m we give that cash straight to the manager

Getting turfed out CL by not investing a penny this year and then finding out that cash was there but kept for the AGM balance sheet brings a bad taste to the mouth

foster was a prime example. Sold for 10m but when we wanted to invest for CL no cash was available

Turned out to be a shambles then AGM balance sheet. Nice bonus for PL also

Oh how I smiled at that mo chara..

    Hope yer well chief.

  15. I see our captain is being accorded the same treatment as Neil Lennon and Aiden McGeady. The SMSM must really fear him.

It does coincide (purely incidentally, of course) with him playing the best football of his career.

  16. Captain Beefheart on

    ST,

You are right. Immense damage was done by the CL qualification humiliation this season. Sadly, it wouldn’t surprise me were we to not invest again for next year. Legia and Maribor were mediocre and could have been dispatched.

I used to firmly believe that we would always try to invest. Obviously not now.

A treble doesn’t cover up the damage done.
