Gerrard’s own flaws translate into Newco indiscipline

270

Odsonne Edouard put Celtic ahead against Newco yesterday on 27 minutes with the game’s outstanding move.  He collected a breath-taking first-time pass from James Forrest on the halfway line, evading Connor Goldson in the process, before pulling left then right, and despatching a left foot shot past a helpless Allan McGregor.  It gave the champions a deserved lead.

If there is a manager in Scotland who does not send his team out to wind up Alfredo Morales he is missing a trick.  Steven Gerrard has provided the Columbian with excuses for his litany of red cards all season, but finally relented and before leaving Celtic Park informed the player he would be fined.  It was too little, too late, to prevent, the damage of record levels of indiscipline was done.

Jonny Hayes picked up a first half booking and with Newco down to 10 men, he was sacrificed for the more attack minded Scott Sinclair.  Despite Celtic having a man advantage, with Ntcham flagging, Newco gained control of the middle of the park.  Ryan Kent scored a fine goal, and while it was Newco’s first attempt of the game, it came as no surprise.

Tom Rogic came on for Ntcham a minute later but the big Aussie, so often the scourge of Newco, was well short of match sharpness.

Kieran Tierney passed a late fitness test but was forced to retire on 73 minutes.  Just a minute later Dedryck Boyata hobbled off.  With Celtic having made all their substitutes, the game was set for a 10 v 10 finale.

With a mind on our midfield casualty list, on Friday I suggested winning control of that area of the field unlikely and unnecessary, as Newco’s defensive anxiety was likely to settle the outcome.  This proved to be the case.

Newco gave at least as good as they got during the closing period of the game, but whereas Celtic were rock solid defensively, James Tavernier would provide the self-inflicted blow to the visitors.  It was a classic, ‘What’s the right back doin’, Tom?’ moment.

His under-hit pass on 86 minutes was collected by Callum McGregor, who immediately despatched the ball Edouard on the edge of the area.  The Celtic striker drew the Newco defence left, opening space for James Forrest, who he then released with time and space to control before finding the net.

As though to prove that indiscipline at Newco was not only a problem limited to Morales, Kent punched Scott Brown on the face before play resumed, an incident which was missed by the officials but not TV cameras.  A retrospective ban will be on its way.

The drama continued through five minutes of added time, with Kristoffer Ajer making an incredible saving tackle inside the six-yard box to deny Joe Worrall.

You will remember Scott Brown making little of being assaulted by a Newco fan at Ibrox in 2017.  The man has been provoked more than anyone in Scottish football since Neil Lennon, but unlike Morales, he does not retaliate with violence.  The sight of Scott celebrating with eight fingers in the air at full time in front of the Newco support was intolerable to the already-booked Andy Halliday, who could not contain his rage and collected his second yellow card in the tunnel.

It is eight, Andy, as in eight-in-a-row, one less than nine, two less than 10, not that things will change at 10-in-a-row.  This is what the future looks like.  Scott Brown will soon need to take his socks and boots off to continue this motif.

Post-match, Steven Gerrard said he would have reacted the same was as Halliday in similar circumstances, proving they are both too stupid to be on the field with Scott Brown.  Gerrard should consider how his own flaws continue to influence his team’s discipline.  If he believes his players have an issue with discipline, but continues to provide cover for them, he is the real problem.

Once again, I am probably in the minirity, but did anyone else think that SB clipped Morelos’ heel before the elbow. I wasn’t sure from the video

    ………………….

.As I Posted earlier, it DOES APPEAR that Morelos “Tapped” Broonies ankle first, then Broonie did likewise, before the Ugly Hun lashed out.

BOTH “Taps” were little or nothing. The best view of it is from behind the Celtic End Goal.

    SCOTT BROWN FEARS RANGERS!!!!!

In depth analysis from Rangers News:

“As you can see, Brown rakes Morelos Achilles and the striker reacts. Granted, when you put your elbow up like that you give the referee a decision to make.

But Morelos doesn’t actually catch him and Brown makes it look much worse than it actually was.

It’s an astonishing display of brinksmanship. And further evidence that Celtic fear Rangers. Scott Brown fears Rangers.

For the first time in years, we can compete with them on the pitch. And instead of giving us a game of football, they’ll resort to these underhanded tactics. Rangers star Morelos was undoubtedly harshly done by.

It’s grimy, unsightly and completely unnecessary. Imagine they actually tried to play us at football? If anything, Rangers beat Rangers yesterday, and it sticks more in the craw that we went down to such a poor Celtic team.

“did anyone else think that SB clipped Morelos’ heel before the elbow. I wasn’t sure from the video”

Yeah I think most people saw it, but it’s not relevant. Easy to argue accidental, happens all over the pitch. No excuse for smacking someone in the face with an elbow.

Ditto the punch on Brown – he may have been slowing down the kick-off (as I understand it) but if that gives an opponent a free punch, the game’s rules have changed since I last looked at them.

And the stramash at the end was also down to Rangers’ players indiscipline. If we think back to the game they won end December, I remember Brown booted in the baws, Christie getting his baws squeezed and stamping on Ralston, and ALL by Morelos – no-one reacted worthy of a card. I’m not using whataboutery but rather revenge is a dish served cold.

I remember Larry Czonka, legendary fullback for the Miami Dolphins’ invincible team saying “never react – the crowd roars at the provocation and by the time the ref looks round he sees the reaction and you get penalized. You’ve got next game. You’ve got next year. You can wait,” ;o)

What progression was “monitored” in easing to OBaF Act and which country was at the forefront of it- the Soviet Union of the 1970s or modern day Hungary?

No idea mate, you seem to have mistaken me for some sort of SNP spoke person, I’m not. But if you are looking for some answers then maybe you get further if you approach your local MP and his/her to find out for you.

When we get that “country” status, can I have independence for Strathclyde again? The Dons can have Pictland. The Gaels can have Dal Riata and The Borders rugby crowd can have Bernicia.

Scotland is a country and is recognized as such by the UN. Wales was not until fairly recently, but that has now been sorted. Neither then United Kingdom nor Great Britain are countries. I believe the UK is what is called a constitutional monarchy consisting of the countries England, Scotland and Wales. I’m not sure but I think NI is still considered a province. Hope that helps.

But you were the one extolling the SNP as progressive and benchmarking against enlightened European legislation, therefore you are responsible for explaining why they so often reach for repressive and centralising measures.

Is Scotland “recognised” by the UN? Would they not recognise Strathclyde too then? Lithuania used to be a very big country- can they get their territories back? Or is there an agreed point where history and national borders were fixed?

Just went back and looked at the video again …. dont see Morelos catching Brown’s ankles, but I do see Brown catching Morelos’…

however,as you suggest, it doesn’t look like there is much in it, and proving it wasn’t an accident would be difficult (although, in Scotland, when dealing with a Celtic player …probably less so)…

I wouldnt at all be surprised if they somehow didn’t end up suspending Neil Lennon for failing to control his players … something like that.

personally, I think SB was winding him up … we all know Morelos is a loose cannon, and he reacted badly when his andkle was caught previoullsy (Aberdeen), so, I find it hard to believe that this wasnt in SB’s mind …

and he did seem to be winding up Kent with the ball …

but, as has been pointed out, that is all part of the game… and in no way justifies the reaction by either Morelos or Kent (except perhaps in Scottish football, except where, once again, they will blame not only SB, but also NFL) ….

but in all seriousness, if they cant cite him for either of these ‘offences’, I think Brown will get a suspension for the actions at the end ….just hope it doesn’t impact on the scottish cup, as those are now the only games of any consquence … but, honestly havent turned my mind to whether any discipline here would carry into the cup games…

As for Broony being cited, given what Morelos got rescinded this year, a good lawyer (do you know wan?) should get Scott off. The section of R750 fans , Scott was celebrating in front of, also places him directly in front of 5,000 Celtic fans.

Not sure if mentioned earlier… as soon as Moreles was off the pitch Scott Brown immediately acted like a true Captain , he went round the players instructed them to “keep the heid” repeatedly pointing to his temples….and was probably telling them not to give Bobby Mad Hun the chance to “even things up”

  22. Good shout I say by NFL, it was Hayes that got himself the hook at halftime and we need all the fit players we can have starting in just two days time.

Hayes was a certainty, to be yellow carded again, a committed player who got himself overwound when he’s needed again for St.Mirren on Wednesday. The lack of fitness Tierney, Lustig, and Izagiurre is our bigeest threat to the treble.

Its a marathon but Tom Rogic and Oliver Ntcham needed game time and got it, for bigger battles in the league and the cup both of which don’t concern Sevco.

How anybody can suggest they know better than NFL regarding the fitness of the players he trained with all week is quite frankly bizarre.

  25. Gerrard is a conman. He is a walking contradiction. All season after a bad result he has come out and said ‘the buck stops with me, I take responsibility’ only to proceeed to throw his players under the bus in the next sentence.

Yesterday he actually said he couldn’t defend Morelos only to then proceed in the next sentence to say he would love and protect Morelos ! Before getting stuck into Brown and providing Morelos with cover.

  26. This must have been a wonderful game to watch for the neutral observer.

It had everything great goals, great saves and plenty of handbags.

I must say i was sorry to see Morelas getting the line not that I had sympathy for the latino hitman but I wanted Celtic to completely overwhelm the full Rangers outfit which was about to happen but for some great goalkeeping by McGregor. I did not want Celtic to lose that impetus against the ten which unfortunately was the case in the second half.

lenny picked the right team which had the opposition in all sorts of trouble in that opening period. I picked out Ryan Kent as the Newco dangerman after the first game and he did not disappoint. This Liverpool lad would be a steal at 6 or 7 million if Broony can absolve him for his moment of madness.

Young Kris was magnificent and in times of stress you need players with that x-factor to see you through to the end and enter Jamsie and French Eddie, players with the class to manufacture to brilliant scores. 8 in a row now let’s get ready for the Cup.
