Gerrard’s own flaws translate into Newco indiscipline

270

Odsonne Edouard put Celtic ahead against Newco yesterday on 27 minutes with the game’s outstanding move.  He collected a breath-taking first-time pass from James Forrest on the halfway line, evading Connor Goldson in the process, before pulling left then right, and despatching a left foot shot past a helpless Allan McGregor.  It gave the champions a deserved lead.

If there is a manager in Scotland who does not send his team out to wind up Alfredo Morales he is missing a trick.  Steven Gerrard has provided the Columbian with excuses for his litany of red cards all season, but finally relented and before leaving Celtic Park informed the player he would be fined.  It was too little, too late, to prevent, the damage of record levels of indiscipline was done.

Jonny Hayes picked up a first half booking and with Newco down to 10 men, he was sacrificed for the more attack minded Scott Sinclair.  Despite Celtic having a man advantage, with Ntcham flagging, Newco gained control of the middle of the park.  Ryan Kent scored a fine goal, and while it was Newco’s first attempt of the game, it came as no surprise.

Tom Rogic came on for Ntcham a minute later but the big Aussie, so often the scourge of Newco, was well short of match sharpness.

Kieran Tierney passed a late fitness test but was forced to retire on 73 minutes.  Just a minute later Dedryck Boyata hobbled off.  With Celtic having made all their substitutes, the game was set for a 10 v 10 finale.

With a mind on our midfield casualty list, on Friday I suggested winning control of that area of the field unlikely and unnecessary, as Newco’s defensive anxiety was likely to settle the outcome.  This proved to be the case.

Newco gave at least as good as they got during the closing period of the game, but whereas Celtic were rock solid defensively, James Tavernier would provide the self-inflicted blow to the visitors.  It was a classic, ‘What’s the right back doin’, Tom?’ moment.

His under-hit pass on 86 minutes was collected by Callum McGregor, who immediately despatched the ball Edouard on the edge of the area.  The Celtic striker drew the Newco defence left, opening space for James Forrest, who he then released with time and space to control before finding the net.

As though to prove that indiscipline at Newco was not only a problem limited to Morales, Kent punched Scott Brown on the face before play resumed, an incident which was missed by the officials but not TV cameras.  A retrospective ban will be on its way.

The drama continued through five minutes of added time, with Kristoffer Ajer making an incredible saving tackle inside the six-yard box to deny Joe Worrall.

You will remember Scott Brown making little of being assaulted by a Newco fan at Ibrox in 2017.  The man has been provoked more than anyone in Scottish football since Neil Lennon, but unlike Morales, he does not retaliate with violence.  The sight of Scott celebrating with eight fingers in the air at full time in front of the Newco support was intolerable to the already-booked Andy Halliday, who could not contain his rage and collected his second yellow card in the tunnel.

It is eight, Andy, as in eight-in-a-row, one less than nine, two less than 10, not that things will change at 10-in-a-row.  This is what the future looks like.  Scott Brown will soon need to take his socks and boots off to continue this motif.

Post-match, Steven Gerrard said he would have reacted the same was as Halliday in similar circumstances, proving they are both too stupid to be on the field with Scott Brown.  Gerrard should consider how his own flaws continue to influence his team’s discipline.  If he believes his players have an issue with discipline, but continues to provide cover for them, he is the real problem.

    If you can keep your head when all about you

    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

    But make allowance for their doubting too;

    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

    Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;

    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

    And treat those two impostors just the same;

    If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings

    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

    And lose, and start again at your beginnings

    And never breathe a word about your loss;

    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

    To serve your turn long after they are gone,

    And so hold on when there is nothing in you

    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,

    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

    If all men count with you, but none too much;

    If you can fill the unforgiving minute

    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

    Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

  6. Evening Times released a story that the supporter in critical condition had died. Then retracted and changed the story to fighting for his life. Pond life gutter journalism.

  7. Whilst we are still in celebratory mood from yesterday, can I take you back to 25th May, 2017. CRC and myself were sitting (i.e. drinking) in Pink Street in Lisbon deep in conversation about Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. There was plenty to be Happy about; celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our greatest triumph and shortly to secure our first treble with The Invincibles. Life, however was not quite so rosy. Retirement wasn’t the glorious hurrah I had expected it to be and Mrs S was feeling the same (except the retirement bit…she has a good bit to go). Anyway a kernel of an idea was born then – work from home by using our FRED donkeys and other animals to provide animal assisted therapy to those in need or want. Now, two years later, having set up a not-for profit Community Interest Company (CIC), we are asking for your help to take this to the next stage.

    We have been selected by Border TV to bid for National Lottery Funding in order to build an inside enclosure so that we can deliver this service all year round. Please, please vote for us by visiting this link: http://www.thepeoplesprojects.org.uk/projects/view/going-undercover?

    There’s a short film there which, thankfully, I did not contribute to much, although I did manage to keep my Celtic bunnet on in the last scene. I left most of the talking to Mrs S. For those in the Border Region – hope you’re lurking Malorbhoy – we’re on the telly tomorrow night, 6 p.m. Border News.

    We would be ever so grateful if you could vote for us. Importantly, it is not just people in the Border Region that can take part in the vote. Any of the 13 ITV regions can vote for our bid. So Big Packy1 in Cheshire, BMCUWP (we know you still lurk) can vote in Swindon, Gerry Fae The Brig, Delaney D, Sipsini anyone from Land’s End to John O’Groats and all you guys in The Six Counties can pile in too. After voting please share with all your family, friends and contacts – it would be much appreciated.

    You can find out more on our Facebook page – Farmersfield Rest Home for Elderly Donkeys or our website: animalssuupportingpeople.co.uk

    A final word to Marc: A very big thank you for spending time with me back then and remembering us for The Seville Beneficiary for Goals Galore 4. Your support has been immense.

  13. GFTB – If You click on the button “Add to votes” next to our photo – “Going Undercover” that should do it. It’s the Border Region. Idiot that I am I should have highlighted that our project Is “Animals Supporting People at FRED – Going Undercover”.

    And there was me going on about lousy journalism.

    CorkCelt – how clever is that….go to the top of the class. Many Thanks!

  14. The amount of whingeing from Ibrox only serves to show how pathetic they truly are. Like wee kids in the playground….. mammy, mammy, mammy….

    Morelos … a player who has kicked and punched his opponent in just about every game, who has even grabbed their testicles…. and they are going so OTT about him having been provoked…. Who are they trying to kid?

    A never ending stream of excuses for the failings of your players Mr G, only goes to show how unfit they are to be on the field and how unfit you are to be a manager.

    Brown showed true class throughout and after the game. He has kept his cool whilst his opponents blew a fuse over little or nothing.

    Can anyone point to anything SB did which doesn’t take place in every game, even at school level?

    Is Mr G telling us that his players can’t handle that level of provocation?

    Really?

    Utterly pathetic, one and all.

  15. SB — Best on-field wind up merchant I have seen in 20 years.

    Dennis Rodman still the world champ as he was a bit more subtle.

    However SB has made it his vocation to haunt our friends from Govan.

    You’d be welcome anytime.

    Vote registered … all the best

    Defo hitting ma kip it’s been a long long weekend …

    Has Broony been jailed yet for smiling :-)

  18. We should have been out of sight by half time yesterday. Only a drop in our aggression and forward play allowed them to look decent second half. It was telling that we upped our game when we went down to 10 men in the second half. The result victory for the good ghuys.

    Better still, we have a team with lots of development in it. We have continued to develop, identify and purchase young players whilst others look for the quick fix and when the quick fix does not work, what next? More of the same.

    Celtic dont always do everything right but one thing they do well is keep to plan, refuse to change course or panic despite the media spin about superstars coming up to put us in our place etc…

    At the end of this season we well be 10 or more players down yet we will be only 1 quality rightback and centreback away from being a far better team than this season and well within our budget.

    We have already got our wee ukranian winger (look the business) signed up alongside bayo and morgan will return too.

    Thats before we even think about the young right and left back from america and the academy bhoys like oxo-flex and dembelle coming through.

    Wee fergus laid the foudation and dd followed with lennoxtown football centre. tb structured the academy and it his vision has grown into something to be proud off and all has been built because of the hoops faithful. Lots of pain and hurt short tern for longer term gains.

    The hotel, museum, superstore and fanzone etc… are hopefully the next step towards moving celtic beyond the others, not vanity projects rather the building blocks that will keep us ahead of the game while others jump from one quick fix to the other.

  25. It’s now the morning after and for sevco April 1 came a day early as they thought they were going tae win in the 2nd half as they allegedly battered us, aye so they did, 1 shot on goal and that was their only goal, meanwhile we had 7, hmmm 7-1 has a nice ring tae it, aye they were that much on top that they committed 16 fouls to our 8 and had 5 corners tae our 10.

    I recall a game where we were 2 up within the opening 4 minutes by our link men McKellar and Watt (that’ll have a few guessing here). We then let a very good hun side that contained 10 internationals have the ball in the middle of the park and just contained them. This was seen as our most one sided victory since October 19 1957. So percentage possession disnae always mean the best side on the day.

    I was a wee bit concerned about yesterday, this was a must win for them, SBs were due so this was their big chance as they had a former hades SB holder and alleged member of the lol officiating along with a couple of his brithers running line and the token harry wragg (whose sister is allegedly an SB holder and would be in the stand) as 4th official.

    Our depleted squad resembled a pilgrimage tae Lourdes, no not mersey tunnel mooths daughter who is named after a geriatric Michigan born singer’s wee lassie and no the holy shrine where our Blessed Mother appeared, rather than a team going for a treble treble.

    I still maintain that clodagh bottled it and left before it could be undone and his much vaunted reputation sullied.

    There was a period though between October 19, 1957 and March 8, 1965 where we played them 35 times winning only 4 games, I recall my mother saying we might be paying for the 7-1 game, mibbees she was right.

    It’s not as if we had a dearth of talent, far from it, but the alleged shambles in the board room always gets the blame and yet after Jock took over the reserves we had a decent record at this level winning both the Reserve and Combined Reserve titles, as well as the 2nd 11 Cup and developing the future Lisbon Lions, there may have been other sinister reasons.

    In contrast since the new side called sevco evolved they have played us 16 times, we have won 12 and tied 2 although they love to claim a win over a miscued Tom Rogic penalty, a wee bit like us and our toss of the coin Charity Cup win in 1959 which they scoffed at although unlike them we actually went on to win that trophy gubbin the Bully Wee 5-0. Not forgetting, no that they’ll ever let us, the loss on December 29, this IMHO has more questions than answers.

    So where are they now in their effort tae sell SBs, they still maintain they had us on the run with their 10 men but it should be noted that when we jamsie slotted the winner home we ourselves had played for 12 minutes with 10 men.

    Oh and that big bad Scotty wound their poor wee players up, I can recall the FGB, at the urging of the cheeky chappie and the acting manager who lost his only game in charge in the SC at East End Park, simulating flute playing or the mock huddle in front of our fans at the urging this time of a wee Inverclyde quisling, but that’s only banter.

    So here we are 13 points ahead with 21 yet to play for, however let’s not forget that we had a 2-1 victory at hades and with 12 points to play for managed tae lose the title, I know all about ebts but we should keep this in mind with 7 games to go, especially our manager who was part of that tired squad.
