Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan

635

Managers often have the task of focussing players’ attention on the next game, instead of an important subsequent game a few days later, but Brendan Rodgers has an additional task in this respect right now.

You only need to speak to a fellow Celtic fan this week to understand what’s on all of our minds.  Two games over the next four days will make a significant impression on the season, but there is no certainty what the squad will look like when the second match takes place.  The closure of the transfer window in a little over 48 hours will loom just as large as Sunday’s league encounter with Newco.

This is where the manager earns his wages.  While tomorrow’s game against Suduva should present a straightforward challenge, you and I remember another Scottish team, no longer with us, going out of Europe to Lithuanian opposition just months after competing in the Uefa Cup Final.

Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan.

This all smacks of bad planning.

Or perfect planning for corporate freeloaders who use the emotional pull of Celtic supporters to fill their bulging pockets.

No wonder they loved supporters singing I just can’t get enough..

  2. GORBALSTAM

Thanks, I love the emotional Celtic posts as well, they tend to drift off during the window and get replaced by fanatacism ( but not in a nice way ) Celtic fantasists and it is a fantasy game become irrational.

Believe you me somebody will post that Celtic have no choice other than to accept Gazillions for Dembele

and before you know it somebody probably ( from Ireland ) they’re Celtic crazy, will say ‘ I’d drive him to the airport masell for £22.5M ‘

  3. This thread seemed to have started off with criticism that the story of Moussa going to Lyon was fake news designed to make PL look good by holding on to him but not signing anyone.

The same posters making that accusation have seamlessly morphed into saying “How dare PL sell Moussa when we need him!” without a single acknowledgement of what they had got wrong originally.

Now, I hope Moussa stays, despite his injury record, but I am not holding my breath. These players intend to be at Celtic for as short a time as possible. They do not see Celtic as the peak of their career. Not even Kieran Tierney, who is truly Celtic daft, would seriously advance that notion..

Any promising player we attract will want to move on because they can earn bigger bucks than they ever will with us AND they can earn more caps for countries like France if they are perceived as playing in a “bigger” environment.

    We are fans.

    We are delusional about Celtic.

But, if you can see through the delusion for a second, you might notice what an insignificant club we are in the eyes of UEFA, Big Leagues and the TV stations which increasingly drive our sport.

You can see that as a depressing prospect or as a scenario devoid of hope but we are where we are and that is a pretty similar place to where celtic has been for all but 8 years (66 to 74) of my Celtic supporting life.

If my support had been conditional on Celtic doing well in Europe or winning everything I would have been gone before the 80s set in and I would have given up football altogether by the 90s.

But I didn’t and neither did you.

We all hope to get back to being relevant at a European level but it ain’t happening anytime soon.

In political terms, we are an “elder statesman” club, once relevant but now, sadly, long past it. We are slow and overweight and inept. Mind you, we can still slowly swing a big clubbing fist and an inattentive opponent can get a nasty blow, maybe even a knockout one.

But, we will still be odds on to lose the next fight.

Whether Moussa goes or does not go tonight or tomorrow, he will go. And so will N’tcham and Boyata and, possibly Edouard in the next few windows.

And so would you, if you were good enough, to have a tilt at a bigger club.

Victor Wanyama, does not regret his move to Southampton, which earned him a move to Spurs where he occasionally gets a game. He is not champing at the bit to get back to Celtic and lose more than half his wages. Neither are Virgil Van Dijk or Fraser Forster. Stuart Armstrong has no regrets and John McGinn will have his few regrets quickly mitigated by his wages, regular appearances for Villa and more Scotland caps because he is in a big league. Hell, even Teemu Pukki is happy to be at Norwich, scoring and earning bigger bucks. He wont be back in Scotland, Finland or Scandinavia anytime soon.

I understand the concern we have that this has been a terrible window, so far, for player recruitment. Departures, however inevitable, will add salt to those recruitment wounds. The few late buys and loans we will get, despite the repeated assurances we are getting no-one, will still not satisfy anyone because they will not be proven performers for us.

And , if you want to deny our economic circumstances and put all the blame for this in PL’s hands- don’t let me stop you- he is paid way too much anyway so he should be able to put up with flak.

Just don’t expect me to buy into the fantasy that, if it wasn’t for that pesky Peter Lawwell, we’d be, to paraphrase an earlier poster, quite clearly, strengthened enough to guarantee qualification. That “Almost Certain” promise that should set alarm bells ringing.

I’ll still be there tomorrow night to see my team play and I’ll be cheering on from the sofa on Sunday.

  4. Ron Bacardi on 29th August 2018 8:06 pm

Well of course they couldn’t. Doesn’t mean to say that the present incumbents are doing sterling work though.

  5. The fans sit and mock Chris Graham and Co for being board apologists but our fans are just as bad defending our imposters.

The fans that defend this nonsense are doing more harm than good.

    2. Not sure that our Board can properly run the Club either. They let 10 titles and 40 million quid disappear on their watch. They appear to have done a shady deal to keep the zombies going, turned over info to the police, and have managed to piss off a large section of what are, otherwise, some of the most (frustratingly sometimes) faithful fans in the world.

Doubt that the many board/ management naysayers could run the total enterprise that is Glasgow Celtic.

    That’s a patently ridiculous statement.

You or i for that matter have no idea of the business acumen of posters.

But i would guess that they would make more effort to put the team before excessive profit.

Or we do what we have done multiple times, including this window and sell the player and don’t replace him.

We already have £30m in the bank. Did that help us against AEK? Selling Moussa only makes sense if he is replaced otherwise we are just weakening our team.

  13. I honestly didn’t think the board could go stoop any lower and do this especially with 2 days to go.

Total disgrace and yet fans are still backing the board.

    Gullibillies within our suppprt.

  14. If we get £22.5m for Dembele it’s obviously crazy money, for us.

But Dembele is a top player in a decent length contract.

We apparently rejected £9m for Boyata who can and probably will walk for nothing in a year. I’ll let that sink in.

  15. Who would win between selling Moussa for £30m

    and

investing a bit in the squad, backing the manager, qualifying for CL, having Moussa till January before bagging £30 million for him and £30 to £40 million from CL?

  17. It is just oh so sad and mind numbingly bemusing how once again Celtic have totally fecked up yet another transfer window.

Stronger each window they said- ??? in which parallel universe would that be then? Perhaps in some multiverse another Glasgow Celtic FC have just signed a top quality CH along with a much sought after DM as well as retaining the the services of their top striker.

  19. SFTB I got it wrong. I honestly didn’t think even lawwell and co would sell dembele given the mess they have made.

But what the hell do I know. They clearly are laughing at our stupidity. They hold us in utter contempt (as does paul67).

They didn’t need to sell dembele he had a few years to go. You just say he is not for sale. Don’t give me all the guff about an unhappy player. It’s inntheir interests to perform well.

    This is just greed.

We aren’t even a football club anymore.

I have posted a perfectly civil and factual comment. If you can direct me to a lead article on CQN criticising Mr Lawwell and/or the plc board any time over the last 13 years, or even one which questions the “strategy”, I will gladly retract my comment and apologise.

While being grateful to the host for the opportunity to read and post the blog, I would also point out that hits from people like myself also contribute to the advertising revenue generated by this website.

That does not grant me or anyone else licence to be rude or abusive on this blog. There is nothing in my post at 7.55pm that can be construed as such. I certainly haven’t used these pages to call a fellow Celtic fan a bedwetter for example.

The blog is held out as being an antidote to lazy journalism. As such you wouldn’t be expect any topic to off limits and it to be a space where a plurality of views concerning the running and performance of Celtic FC are shared and discussed.

  21. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Bhoys Bhoys IF Dembele has gone and I will wait until Celtic announce it he would not go if he did not want to go.Now if we try to hold on to the player but he wants to move one it will not encourage any other budding youngsters to sign for Celtic. Sometimes the player holds the majority of control as is the case with Dembele if we get a record fee for the player it will have been good business and we should wish the player all the best for the future. H.H.

  22. There was always a likelihood that Moussa would go on this window if our valuation of him was met and it was a team he wanted to go to. The recruitment team (incl manager) would have been aware of this and would have a list of replacements ready to hand to the money men to go sign in the event he left. That’s how a well run club operates, isn’t it?

  23. Yeah Bournes what sort of life is that? He moans about the Huns but was the first on the bbc salivating over their “return” and saying how much he missed them.

He would sell his soul for freebies (oh sorry that should be past tense).

  24. Always good to criticise, but the critics on here of board/management should get together and take over Celtic to run the club as they see fit. Not just the football part.
