Giakoumakis , Juranovic and some old lies

273

Those of you who were not around in the 90s, when the Fergus McCann regime was in place, might be unfamiliar with the stories around Giorgos Giakoumakis and Josip Juranovic.  We are told by the ‘popular’ media that both players are disappointed that unwritten agreements to significantly improve their contracts have not been met.

Peddling this line was an industry back in Fergus’ day.  Players and agents were figuratively battering journalists’ doors down with the fine print in unwritten contracts.  We had no new media then, so all we could do is complain to each other, while a significant portion of the support took everything said about the board hook, line and sinker, backed the players and opposed Fergus.

Now, as then, these players have expensive agents and lawyers.  Nothing is agreed that is not in the contract.  Contracts can contain clauses with bonuses or uplifts based on appearances, goals, club success or pretty much any metric you can think of.  If it remains unwritten, it is not an agreement.

As far as Josip (27) and Giorgos (28 next week), honestly, you don’t even need to ask.  Those of us who have ambitions to kick on, move beyond our European cannon fodder status, will want to Asset Manage both of them.  The recruitment operation that brought them to the club in 2021 has only grown in resource; throw the dice without a moment’s hesitation.  Greatness was never achieved by being conservative.

  1. CELTIC40ME @ 1:42 PM,

That wasn’t the point though was it, players taking to twitter and agents rattling the training ground gates makes the behaviour of players and agents in the nineties look like paragons of virtue

My bet if an agent turns up like that at Barrowfield in the nineties, no matter how big and tough he is – he’s going home with a broken jaw!!

    Hail Hail

  2. Dembele fell out with Brendan because Brendan didn’t want to sell him but Lawwell did.

Would any manager want to sell their best players?

McGrory, Delaney, Collins, Crerard, Macari, Hay, Dalglish, MacAvennie and so on. We have always been a selling club.

Foreign players come to our club in the hope and promise of moving on to enjoy the rich rewards of the top five leagues. These players are just passing through.

  3. I don’t understand why we’re opening up contract talks with players who have four years left on contracts. If an offer comes in that meets our valuation then fair enough, but why hand out improved contracts when the current one has years to run ?

Double standards – not okay to be “aggressive” towards a manager by showing up at the training ground, okay to break someone’s jaw. Far worse behavior. Thankfully we’ve moved on from where business disagreements were sorted with physical violence.

I don’t see Tommy Burns breaking anyones jaw

We aren’t, the agents will be knocking on Ange’s door demanding more money

  6. The GG and JJ stuff is probably crap , Paul.#

Should there be any truth in it , which I doubt very much, then if they don’t want to play for us, then get rid.

These days, many managers don’t get the choice and they accept it because that’s how things are. Ajax always do, regardless of who the manager is

Ole Mo (the bounce) Bangura quickly told us he was bound for better teams than Celtic ( , the ass sound door hitting off let don’t your )

  9. Celtic 4 Me,

    Agree with all your posts.

Why the hysteria?.Ange said some will go,some will come in.

Dembele, old news, everyone has their opinion, though no one knows the real story.

Why can’t everyone just wait and see what transpires.Ange is the boss, just leave it to him.

DR and other rags calling the tune with some on here, though they will deny it.

  10. BSR,

    Exactly.

They listen to their agents, who don’t give a toss about them at 28.One last pay cheque for them.

    The agents,I mean.

Slow on the uptake today – which is it? Have these players (or their representatives) gone to the SMSM with a story or is the SMSM just made it up/lying?

If it’s the former, both can GTF.

  12. Mooy showing the form that had me screaming for us to sign him.Only me.

Funny, never seen Tom Mc Laughlin mention that.

A good few others did, when we signed him.

Of course, that’s a very, very high horse he comments from.As a good few posters I’ll know.

  13. The Blogger,

Their agents.Their lifeblood.Maybe players expecting more in bonuses, who knows, who really cares.

Introduction of the Croatian National Anthem has decided xhades of Hail Hail the Celts are here👍

  15. Whether or not Big Gio is unhappy with his terms or new terms, I feel Celtic need to sign another Centre Forward anyway, and get more goals from midfield, anyone who doesnt want to be at Celtic will be known to Ange and will be shifted out with replacements selected in advance, it will be the way of squad turnover, wont be many around doing the Brown Forrest and McGregor service in the future.

  16. I see Bono is in goals for Morocco. Will it be a “Beautiful Day” for Canada or will they have gone through the “Exit” by “Tomorrow” saying “Is that all?” followed by “A Sort Of Homecoming?”

“I don’t understand why we’re opening up contract talks with players who have four years left on contracts. If an offer comes in that meets our valuation then fair enough, but why hand out improved contracts when the current one has years to run ?”

    ————————-

There can be a benefit to the club in doing this. If you bought a player cheaply and have him on a low-ish salary, there may be a correspondingly low-ish transfer-trigger fee whereas, if you re-negotiate, you can make the player happier with a better salary and gain agreement for a higher transfer trigger fee. It can be win:win if the player is happier and more willing to play to his ability and you will get a higher transfer fee, if or when he does go to another club.

The alternative is to force an unhappy player to honour his contract which he can do, even if he doesn’t play well for you. That is a lose lose as you are keeping an unhappy player who is not playing well and whose transfer worth is lessening by the day.

Of course, this is only good practice with those transfer punts who turn out to be better than you thought they were going to be (e.g. O’Riley or Hatate). It would be bad practice to do so with a dud who never played well for you (e.g. Ajeti or Barkas)

  18. Personally, I’m fine with replacing players like JJ and GG , as long as we replace them with better players.

As a few have said already.

Ange warned us of this a few weeks ago. Without actually naming them.

  19. As a kid I used to wonder who would win if Celtic played Scotland or England. In the modern era, who would win if a top club team played against a top international team?

E.G. Spain Vs Manchester City or Brazil Vs Real Madrid.

Is the standard of football at the World Cup higher or lower than in the CL?

Silly question from a wet Thursday here on the Costa Blanca

So let’s see if I got this right. You’re bad-mouthing me because I didn’t come on to CQN and sing your praises when we signed Mooy. You say a few others did. So that leaves scores of others who also didn’t.

    Dear oh dear.

    What age are you, 5?

If Giakoumakis goes, I for one won’t miss him throwing himself to the ground, rolling around and waving an arm in the air every time an opponent breathes on him.

  22. Croatia ROBBED by a VAR AND REF Decision

In the STLL LINE VAR Photo, the Belgium players arm is playing the Croatian boy ONSIDE, in the buil up to the Penalty that was awarded by the Ref.

Surely, that Ref would have seen that when he looked at the off field Monitor ?

The Ref SHOULD have stuck to his original decision.

Having said all the above, Croatia have been poor, apart from the first TEN Seconds when they could have scored from the Kick Aff.

I can see my Bets on Croatia going doon the SWANNIE….UNLESS Croatia get the finger oot ?

    LOL

VAR gives offside when it wasn’t and saves us from a penalty the ref gave, when it wasn’t.

  25. Was Stephen McGowan not the first to break the JJ transfer story just before the WC ?

I had assumed because of this was we’re more than open to selling these lads.

We practically sent JJ to the WC with a for sale sign around his neck.

  26. Tom Mc Laaughlin,@ 3.41,

Still on your high horse, and more importantly, not realizing when someone is casting a really big Rod for you.

    Too easy.

  27. Is it reasonable to suggest that Aaron Mooy WILL be the Midfield Player to drop out when CALMAC is back ?

I can NOT see Big ANGE dropping O’RILEY or HATATE from the starting Eleven in MOST games, once CALMAC is back ?

    HH.

  28. Croatia v Belgium….

Have Croatia got their minds on a DRAW being enough to qualify and send Belgium home ?

There is very little urgency from either Team considering whats at stake…

Maybe the TWO Teams are FEART ?

    LOL

  29. If any truth in it then they are just mercenaries and there is no place for them at our club and should be shown the door. Many before have tried it and ended up in obscurity, the grass is not greener away from Celtic park.

  30. Just on the subject Tom,have you found an Atlas yet ?Have you found out which Continent Morrocco is on?

    Just asking.

  31. Going by some of the reactions on here, you can see how easy it is for the MSM to get some Celtic fans’ knickers in a proverbial twist….

Still not a word about real player contract issues down Govan Way…

    Mmmmmmmm

  32. These two players won’t be going to any of the top teams in the big 5 leagues, with no knowledge of their contracts I wouldn’t know whether they’re due any improvement. Leave it to Ange I’m sure he’s got the situation under control one way or the other. In my opinion they both are not irreplaceable.
