Giakoumakis , Juranovic and some old lies

273

Those of you who were not around in the 90s, when the Fergus McCann regime was in place, might be unfamiliar with the stories around Giorgos Giakoumakis and Josip Juranovic.  We are told by the ‘popular’ media that both players are disappointed that unwritten agreements to significantly improve their contracts have not been met.

Peddling this line was an industry back in Fergus’ day.  Players and agents were figuratively battering journalists’ doors down with the fine print in unwritten contracts.  We had no new media then, so all we could do is complain to each other, while a significant portion of the support took everything said about the board hook, line and sinker, backed the players and opposed Fergus.

Now, as then, these players have expensive agents and lawyers.  Nothing is agreed that is not in the contract.  Contracts can contain clauses with bonuses or uplifts based on appearances, goals, club success or pretty much any metric you can think of.  If it remains unwritten, it is not an agreement.

As far as Josip (27) and Giorgos (28 next week), honestly, you don’t even need to ask.  Those of us who have ambitions to kick on, move beyond our European cannon fodder status, will want to Asset Manage both of them.  The recruitment operation that brought them to the club in 2021 has only grown in resource; throw the dice without a moment’s hesitation.  Greatness was never achieved by being conservative.

  1. Burnley78 – You may be right. Fingers crossed for them though, keeps my son off his Playstation 😄

  2. The ball was in by a spiders bawhair. Fact!

Its like an Andy Murray serve at Wimbledon that doesn’t touch the white line or produce a whiff of chalkdust. It’s called out but the Hawkeye replay shows some of the balls’ shadow hanging over the line so its given as in.

    Exactly what happened tonight.

    You’re all welcome! 😉

Maeda smiling. Now that’s a change.

I noticed when he was subbed he turned round to the field and bowed.

Does he do that at Celtic Park?

    =========================

    He does GG.

Part of Japanese etiquette on entering/leaving the dojo(in this case place of work the football pitch) he bows.kyogo does it too.its a respect thing, culturally.we see that when a player is injured after challenging one of òur Japanese heroes.they are attentive they are OK.

  4. Outside the major countries with home based players Celtic must be one of the clubs providing most players in last sixteen

  5. Maeda pressurised the Spanish keeper twice in about 20 seconds and that directly led to the first goal.

That may be true. Some fine players in the Japanese WC team, for sure.

However, look at how they were organized. Press the man with the ball until he passes it, then rejoin the pack. We don’t even try to do that. We’d have 3 players in opposition half in case the opposition keeper got the ball.

My point is, defence has its time and place.

As a better coach once said, ‘horses for courses’.

I was watching Germany game till last 5. Just heard the post match chat. I assumed that the ref couldn’t tell if the ball was in or out.

Didn’t realise he had disallowed the goal and changed his mind due to VAR.

  9. We have 4 players in the last 16, signed in the last 18 months from China, Poland, England and Japan, playing for Australia, USA, Croatia and Japan

    What an organization we have

  10. I believe Ange is a complex character although he often seems to be straightforward, saying just enough to keep supporters happy. He is a brave man too with a long range plan but how long is an interesting question. I don’t think he is playing some kind of poker with any of our players – if JJ and GG don’t want to agree a new contract, fair enough. They can go. They were, due to age, already on the to “sell sooner rather than later” list. And it is unlikely GG would contribute to CL success. Replacements will be in, but how long they will be there is another matter. If they can be sold and better players brought in then that’s according to Ange’s plan. It’s hard to believe that he is saying this with sincerity, it’s so unusual giving our Board’s previous risk aversiveness. Things must have changed because although I sometimes disagree with Ange on footballing matters as ridiculous as that may sound!) I believe he is sincere.

James McCarthy is a different conversation entirely – he was never an Ange signing.

Of course it works both ways. in those same 1990’s we lost John Collins, not sure if Fergus got any compo there. We also lost out to Sheffield Wednesday over Di Canio, Notts Forest to Big Pierre, and Celta over Cadette, ‘The Three Amigos’. Not to mention losing two home grown Bhoys in Phil o’Donnell and Simon Donnelly, again to er Sheffield Wednesday. Some on here might see that as ‘asset management’ others might see it as poor management. Then again, a bit like the future Sky TV deal, it is the only show in town, and once you start thinking like that, you cannot see any alternatives. Celtic View or Not The View?

It’s noteworthy that a century ago Scotland was able to properly organise a census.

I wonder what people a hundred years from now will have to say about the failure of 2022.
