Gilmour bitterness towards Lawwell evident

645

If you were in any doubt about what we’re up against when it comes to developing Scottish football, former St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour’s incoherent rant in one of today’s newspapers, that Peter Lawwell is running Scottish football, paints a clear picture for you.

Peter Lawwell’s club, your club, PAYS for Scottish football. Fans of this club pour millions into the bank accounts of others from Dingwall to Kilmarnock. Those same clubs earn TV money and trackside advertising to viewers who tune in to see that very same club play football.

Each SPFL and SFA member club has only one vote, and Peter Lawwell is out-voted and frustrated on many issues. What he brings to the table is experience of the game, business, commercial contracts, risk and strategy that no one else in our game has ever enjoyed.

He will be the person who brings evidence-based insight into the value of our game’s commercial properties. This is not because Peter Lawwell is some unassailable guru, he simply has experience of running a business which is greater in depth and scope than anyone else in the history of Scottish football. The fair-minded acknowledge this and are thankful for it.

If your skillset is more suited to a bowling club committee than a business turning over tens of millions of pounds, and you have an unfortunate attitude towards Celtic representatives, all this might rub you up the wrong way.

You may think the last person you want illuminating Scottish football is some educated ******. Believe me, these attitudes persist in our game.

Gilmour, you will remember, was in charge of St Mirren when Charles Green (then the darling of Ibrox), was invited to New St Mirren Park for a Celtic game. They all wanted a piece of Peter then, but there was no courtesy offered from the Celtic contingent on the day.

This is a call to arms by those who want to encourage clubs to obstruct Celtic in every way possible. Peter Lawwell is their bogeyman. They are still sore that they didn’t turnover Celtic (and the rest of Scottish football) in 2012, and they blame Peter for not getting what they wanted.

Now there is a fresh reality to worry about: Celtic making their own way in the world, with the consent of Scottish football. Others will find their place in the game, while one club would wither on the vine without Celtic to feed off.

Formed in Ferryhill as The Points under which name they played their first gig at the Rock Garden pub in Middlesbrough in October 1976,[8][9] they changed the band’s name after a 1973 song by Iggy & The Stooges. Their second gig was supporting The Stranglers at Newcastle City Hall.[10] Significantly, the band also played at the now-legendary punk club The Roxy during its first 100 days. On 9 April 1977, the band appeared on the same bill as Generation X.[11] Early in their career, the band also supported The Vibrators and toured with the Buzzcocks.[10]

I saw Penetration at the Potterrow Students Union in Edinburgh around 1977 or 1978 but can’t remember who they were supporting, might have been The Ramones, but the state I was in it might have been Danny Kaye for all I know.

    Kieran Tierney and Barrie McKay

With copious paper talk about Kieran Tierney and a stunning ten million quid move to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United in the last few days there has to be an increasing sense that England’s big clubs are beginning to see Scotland as a talent pool worth dipping into.

Here’s the thing: Tierney, good player though he undoubtedly is, isn’t the big Tuna, the most exciting player in this wee pond of ours.

That title belongs to Rangers Barrie McKay.

Let’s put Tierney’s qualities into context. Scotland has had a decent record of producing full-backs over the years, he isn’t even the best we have in that slot with Hull’s Andrew Robertson the best of the current crop. In short, he’s just another from the shelf.

Rangers’ Barrie McKay skips past Celtic’s Mikael Lustig

McKay on the other hand is a ‘tanner ba’ player of the type we rarely see anymore.

Technically he’s the best young player Rangers have produced since Barry Ferguson and the best I’ve seen in the Scottish game this season. He glides with the ball, moving past players effortlessly with his low centre of gravity and agility key attributes. He has a wonderful range of passing, his first touch is exquisite and his slight frame masks an explosive shot as Craig Gordon will testify.

Primarily used by Warburton as in inverted winger, the notion persists that over time he will develop into a fully formed and deadly number 10 for club and country.

With only a year and a half left on his deal, it would be tantamount to dereliction of duty for the Rangers board to allow the lad to wind down his contract. A new deal an absolute must, both in a playing and business sense.

For Rangers to close the gap with Celtic the must be able to realise the full potential of their playing assets.

With Celtic in a position where they can sit tight and rebuff anything that isn’t top dollar, Rangers must not allow themselves to become an exploited feeder club to the English market being caught hook, line and sinker.

Kieran Tierney at Lennoxtown on Monday morning

Regardless of whom you believe is the bigger talent, the case of Tierney and McKay is one of accidental heroes and that should be the biggest wake-up call for Scottish football.

There was no grand plan for these two to emerge as they have. Tierney came through under conditions of necessity after transfer moves failed to reach fruition and McKay was on the road to nowhere after a series of unsuccessful loan moves when Mark Warburton arrived to save the day.

Theirs is a tale of what can happen when coaches are brave enough to expose talented young Scottish players to first team football. Surely their story stands as testament to the best way to reel in the big English bucks to the small pond of Scottish football.

We’ll get £1m- £2m for him at the most and our board won’t think twice about accepting it.

£2m isn’t actually a bad deal for a player that only turns up a handful of games each season though.
