Gloriously difficult sincerity

Ruud Gullit is now telling us what a wonder-kid Karamoko Dembele is! The portents on this one are not good. The best thing for Karamoko right now would be to be left alone to develop his talent for three years. Comments from international stars is the last thing the boy needs.

I suspect the unprecedented frenzy which greeted his substitute appearance at Cappielow caught his mentors off guard. The decision to play him was made on football grounds; he’d earned the right to be there so was given the chance. That’s fair enough, you can’t hold a player back, no matter what his age. If he’s not challenged you right inhibiting his development, but the best thing for Karamoko would be a long stretch of anonymity.

I can’t get overexcited at Joey Barton charged with betting on 44 football games against SFA rules during his first few months in Scotland. While the same rule applies in England, Newco don’t play in England, so offenses there have been less prevalent, and therefore the rule is less prominent. A cursory punishment would be appropriate.

The media coverage of Barton this morning gives a fascinating slant on what is already a hoary old story. Joey, we are told, may be able to work his way back into his manger’s plans if he is sufficiently sincere when they meet early next week. Joey, of course, is always sincere.

You’ll seldom encounter people with the most alarming thought processes and in any way doubt their sincerity.

If anything, Joey’s persona could do with a little less frankness. Not for the first time, the Newco management will be measuring the wrong metric when trying to assess Barton.

They’re stuck with him, in all his gloriously difficult sincerity.

Remember McGraw from Moron? On crutches for life because of all the steroid injections he was given to make him play.

*I remember him well, he was a goal scoring machine down at the tail o’ the bank. We were interested in him but he widnae sign for us so we got Paddy Turner instead.

He went tae Easter Road though so it wisnae the green strips he was averse tae, just us.

The Hibbees converted him (nae pun intended) tae right half and I was in the Jungle one day when ran right across the pitch and humphed the wee mhan. I’m a great believer in Karma BTW.

On that note about taking injections, the ship had and brilliant striker who we coveted when he was at Love Street, we actually thought we had signed him when he all of a sudden opted for Pittodrie; he was a thorn in our side when there.

He took pain killers so he could play in the SC Final; he only played 1 more game after that and then had to quit the game at the age of 28. I believe that he struggled tae work again as well.

The manager of the sheep at the time of the SC Final is often spoken of in the same breath as the Big Mhan.

As I hauled my shivering carcass through the front door, I was stopped in my tracks by the luxurious and welcoming aroma of roasting Sumatran coffee beans. I sat at a table by the window, looking on to the façade of the famous stadium, bathed in the weak October sun.

“Usual?” Asked the young waiter, smiling at me.

“Please” I answered, returning his smile.

I rested my hands on the quality linen table cloth, as I warmed up and looked around. There was the usual kind of crowd in. Some fans, some locals, the old guy who always sat on his own, at the same seat. A group of women in their twenties were animated and hysterically laughing at something or other. Two serious looking bespectacled men, both wearing fawn coloured sweaters, were furiously concentrating on the chessmen laid out on the board before them, as they sipped their drinks.

The waiter returned with my order. Cortado Coffee, apple strudel, scented with cinnamon and a glass of Cognac. As I sipped the comforting coffee, I looked around at the images on the walls. They told the story of the club, my club, from heroes that were before my time, McGrory, Gallagher and Malley, through the Lisbon Lions that I watched on small black and white televisions, as a wide-eyed youngster, to today’s stars, carrying the flame for the Celtic support.

I felt at home in this place. My daughter arrived, weighed down with the trophies of her assault on the shops. It was great to see her. I ordered her Capuchino and well-fired roll and square sausage that she always had. She touched the replica European Cup that was on the shelf near our table.

    “For luck” she smiled.

The waiter approached us and WOO WAAH WOO WHAA WOO WHAA WOO………………..

………..WTF? Oh no, that’s the alarm. Got to get up for work and……….

……… OH NOOOOOO. IT WAS A DREAM. THEY HAVEN’T BUILT ALMORE’S CAFÉ YET. :)))

There’s an episode of the Sopranos in which Tony sings “South of the border, down Mexico way” as he’s about to tee off while playing a round with Uncle Junior, who’s just beginning to realise that someone’s been talking out of turn about his, er, private life.

A bit of a slagging, that ended up having very serious consequences.

    What a programme!

I would hope that Brendan ,on accepting his commission , made it perfectly clear that he had no intention of coming to a ” selling club “.

I would be very surprised if he had not.

    The caveat.

I think sometimes signing agreements are made which state that if an acceptable offer , perhaps specified , is made by an EPL club , then Celtic would be obliged to accept it.

Paul writes the blog post each day and comments follow. He seldom writes the other articles which are posted on a daily basis. Anyone can submit features and if they want their own name on ( e.g. Kevin Graham’s excellent Celtic poem today on National Poetry Day), or their blog name ( e.g. vfr800’s frequently stated strong opinions) or indeed no name at all.

The article you refer to was submitted today – as was the poem – and both were posted.

CQN has over 320k users in the last 30 days having grown from 110k when the new format was introduced.

Any controversial articles are passed by Paul but someone thinking we can go all season without losing in the league hardly falls into this category.

We posted an article earlier in the week on Leigh Griffiths stating we can go all season without losing at home in all competitions – that includes avoiding defeat against Barcelona. Maybe a bolder claim?

If Moussa keeps improving he will go. No doubt about it.

Ki, Forster, van Dyke, Dembele. We can use that group of players and their career trajectory as a bargaining chip in the future. A bargaining chip that can hopefully net us other top drawer youngsters from Europe and beyond

We may only have these players for a few years, but cleverly managed, and we have a clever manager, this “greenprint” can serve us well.

    What else can we do?

  23. At the moment I get tickets for all domestic away games because of my history of taking them. The way it works is that the more away tickets you take, the greater chance you have of obtaining tickets for ‘harder’ away grounds.

Hearing rumours that this is about to stop and that every game will be a ballot. Every man for himself.

I would be banned by Paul if I expressed my views on this should it come to pass.

“The biggest thing that – The Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland – has to worry about it talented young footballers been exploited by Football Clubs. ”

Nowhere did Tam Baillie ever state or hint that this was the biggest issue in the lives of Young People.

    It was merely an issue.

But, he is acute enough to know that football issues draw publicity and he can draw attention to other issues on the back of this and maintain the media profile for his policies. That is the dream of all PR people, marketing gurus, Single-Issue Lobbyists et al.

He is, I am afraid, doing his job and doing it well (judged by the criteria of how good is the press coverage of these issues). Tam is unlikely to say anything too untoward and he did not fall into that trap today.

It was other people that are pointing the finger at Celtic. Tam was just pointing the finger at the rights of young people and that includes Talented Young Footballing People
