Gloriously difficult sincerity

Ruud Gullit is now telling us what a wonder-kid Karamoko Dembele is! The portents on this one are not good. The best thing for Karamoko right now would be to be left alone to develop his talent for three years. Comments from international stars is the last thing the boy needs.

I suspect the unprecedented frenzy which greeted his substitute appearance at Cappielow caught his mentors off guard. The decision to play him was made on football grounds; he’d earned the right to be there so was given the chance. That’s fair enough, you can’t hold a player back, no matter what his age. If he’s not challenged you right inhibiting his development, but the best thing for Karamoko would be a long stretch of anonymity.

I can’t get overexcited at Joey Barton charged with betting on 44 football games against SFA rules during his first few months in Scotland. While the same rule applies in England, Newco don’t play in England, so offenses there have been less prevalent, and therefore the rule is less prominent. A cursory punishment would be appropriate.

The media coverage of Barton this morning gives a fascinating slant on what is already a hoary old story. Joey, we are told, may be able to work his way back into his manger’s plans if he is sufficiently sincere when they meet early next week. Joey, of course, is always sincere.

You’ll seldom encounter people with the most alarming thought processes and in any way doubt their sincerity.

If anything, Joey’s persona could do with a little less frankness. Not for the first time, the Newco management will be measuring the wrong metric when trying to assess Barton.

They’re stuck with him, in all his gloriously difficult sincerity.

  1. Got into Breaking Bad only because of the recommendations from posters on CQN.

Guess I need to start paying some attention to The Wire .

My love of the Sopranos was influenced by meeting a hero of mine before he actually become a hero. Lucky enough to share a couple of beers with James Gandolfini in a wee rough Irish bar in West LA. The Sopranos was only one pilot episode old. Still at the mercy of the TV executives. James Gandolfini was worried it would end up on the cutting room floor. He said the cast and script were first class but that the execs were up their own arse. Probably beyond his wildest dreams that it turned out to be so successful.

He liked the bar . A few mad Tims drank there. A good guy was James Gandolfini. .

    Gone to soon.

  2. Corkcelt- spot on , if we get a bid for KT or Moussa that hits the right number, the player will go.I think KT would like to do a ‘Broonie’ but i think he will have to go at some point, and won’t have a say in it, supply and demand.HH

I’m not aware of that though you could be right mate. I’d love you so much to be right.

My point is that his final contract contained the £1m payment. In my opinion we shouldn’t have been asked to pay additionally for that.

MACJAY, I concur. With Rodgers in place and some sterling young talent at the club (KT, Dembele and Roberts) we are in a strong position.

The lure and lucre from the CL can only strengthen our hand, so we should play it. I definitely think things are on the up and we will continue to be an attractive proposition for younger players looking to break through!

    Anyway, goodnight Timland. Till tomorrow.

The only reason Celtic broke through into the CL this year was some luck but mainly Donut motivation coz the huns are back! what we need is some DD UEFA humiliation. If you ask me? :)

    Sadly , you`re probably right.

On the other hand , the EPL is a bubble which , given time, will probably burst.

  7. Angel G- one jealous guy here……after first couple of series’ (i refuse to call them seasons:(), the Sopranos was the biggest show in the US.JG was asked in for talks over future shows, he negociated on behalf of the main characters he same time, a well loved man if you look at the Youtube stuff.

Same for me with BB, and tried to return the favour with the excellent Netflix documentary ‘Making A Murderer’.

Wouldn’t have seen ‘Better Call Saul’ either, which is a very good spin-off/ prequel to BB.

Great story there about Gandolfini. Pity he couldn’t have been around longer to enjoy his incredible success. And add to his body of work.

This debate about The Wire and The Sopranos is pointless. It ignores the most gritty, dramatic, engaging programme ever made. Characterisation so precise.

It’s just my opinion but I don’t see this EPL bubble bursting soon, or ever.

Football is aligned with the general demographic, it’s about greed.

I ask the weans in school what they want to be when they’re older. They want to be rich. When I ask what for they reply that they don’t care, they just want to be rich.

    How deeply sad.

When we were young we wanted to be famous because we were footballers, scientists, artists, authors etc.

Now, it’s all about keeping up with the Kardashians.

  11. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Yesterday I watched the hour long highlights of our game at Dens. I thought the team played well. There is an improvement in Gordon’s decision making and he seems more confident in the last few games. Suminovic has returned in good form, and Lustig has recaptured his form of old. The movement of the midfield and forward players was slick, and their passing was good.

So all in all, a big improvement in almost all areas of the team. Almost all.

One area that has not improved is our terrible ball retention from our own throw-ins. Why is this?

The sopranos and the wire were phenomenal tv. Can I throw in game of thrones?

I was on a Liverpool site (this is anfield) and there was a lot of disrespect for Rodgers. A lot of uncontested nonsense (he spent 300 million, when the reality is the net spend was £30 million a year, which is nothing in the EPL, Suarez as the reason for good season etc). Put me right off Liverpool if I’m being honest.

I’d like to EOC getting more game time. I thought he showed real potential.

Ambition is a positive character trait.

    Firstly, thanks for your reply.

You say that “any controversial articles are passed by Paul”, and that the article about Celtic going unbeaten throughout the season “hardly falls into this category”.

Does Paul pass the articles that are not controversial?

Who decides if an article is controversial?

End of the day, I made no comment re any other article about poems, so miss the relevance there?!

I simply found an article to be quite obnoxious.

Do you agree that there was a tone of entitlement within the article?

Do you agree that the writer (unnamed) stated that they spoke on behalf of ALL Celtic supporters?

Personally, imo, it was an article that was not befitting of Paul’s CQN blog.

I think Kieran will listen to Tommy Burns advice when that Time comes.

  21. How soon is now?

C’mon the Lennoxtown Bhoys get in that first team asap.

Kieran’s decision making is marvellous, IMO, an incredible strong point in hs game for one so young. I’m sure there are a few more KT class lads going to get in the Team over the next few years. ;)

  23. SFTB @ 10:51,

You are probadly right… that may well be his remit. He may well be doing his “job” well.

But as you may have gathered I have little time for modern politicians and their apparatchiks.

My cousin used to work in the schemes of my home town – Airdrie, as a social worker for young poeple… the tales she told were harrowing… often quoting “the worst in Europe”.

Of course that was well over twenty years ago and she does a similar role in London now.

So hopefully things have much improved… Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People is certainly giving that impression.

I’ve no idea what goes on for Scotland’s kids… I hear stories… schemes where there is endemic substance abuse… real prospects only for the bright, lucky or talented few.

As I said… maybe things have vastly improved for Scotland’s kids… if so that is truly great.

Or maybe the Scottish Government doesn’t want to focus on these things…

Big bad Celtic must be a much better angle eh!

Hope all’s good with you… I do enjoy your contributions!
