Great contracts can sink a manager, Acceptable Use Policy

392

There was a time not so long ago when Jackie McNamara was the next big thing in football management. His fall from a pedestal at Dundee United to inglorious resignation this morning at York City came swiftly, precipitated by the loss of three players to Celtic in 2015.

Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci were brought to Celtic last year by Ronny Deila. Their departure precipitated United’s fall from competitive a SPL club to relegation candidates a few months into last season, costing Jackie his job in October.

As with a lot in football, there’s more Magic Circle than centre circle going on. What you see happen with players distracts the eye from what’s going on behind the scenes. In April 2015 Dundee United went so far as to issue a statement confirming bonuses were payable to their manager on recent transfers. A manager’s contract is none of our business, it’s exceptional that it was made so, but this gives us an insight into what was going on between the McNamara and United at the time.

Jackie was finished at United from that moment, not that he was blameless. In a few years he took a club brimming with potential and put it on a path to relegation. They will remember him at York City as an unmitigated failure, with few redeeming features.

Resentment brewed at United in the months between Armstrong and Mackay-Steven leaving, and that April statement. He should have left at the time, and should only have made trips to York as a tourist (go, it’s a great city).

His early work at Partick Thistle and United marked him out, but his choice of mentors and collaborators didn’t do him any favours. That United contract worked for him on paper, but it was a burden on his career.  He’ll be lucky to pick up as high a profile a job as Thistle or United, which is a pity, as he’s a better manager than his CV currently suggests.

VFR – put me down for buying a horse please. I’d suggest maybe an absent CQNers race where you might price the horses a bit higher than on the night.

Gordybhoy – is it a Bulgarian race night?

Great idea. 8 horses, 8 jockeys. £10 a go. £50 for the winning owner and £50 for the jockey?

They are poor tonight but after finishing 2nd and 3rd in last two World Cups I don’t think they are in terminal decline, yet. They’re probably just in a period of transition, similar to early 80s after the glory years of the 70s. Feyenoord seem to be the team in Holland with the next crop of possible superstars, Ajax are now the ones struggling. They will struggle to qualify as France look certs to qualify and the Dutch will need to take their chances in the play offs.

Ex Bristol City and Man City player , Gerry Gow , passed away today aged 64. Another victim of cancer.

I was told he was originally from Drumchapel but sent all hs footballing career down the road.

His Afro style hair and moustache made him stand out as well as being a solid and dependable midfielder.

My condolences to the Gow family and may his soul rest in peace

The commentator said on a few occasions poor for someone of his quality.

    Summed up the entire game.

Or is it the reality as opposed to the television hype of the sport?

Soulless would be an apt description of most international football matches.

They did not qualify for the Euros and have lost to some average teams since last world cup.

They don’t seem to be on the road to recovery after that pitiful display.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Very poor Dutch performance at home. There seemed no inspiration and the players didn’t seem to be on the same wavelength.

Are players so indoctrinated into their club styles that they cannot collectively adapt to a national team or is there far too much money and perks in club football , that the motivation and pride have left the building.

  17. I honestly can’t remember when the attitude towards inter footy changed.

Years ago I loved inter footy and I know that most of my mates did as well, but over the years it has waned big time, was speaking to Pedro the postie this morning, asked him about the game against Albania last night, he didny bother watchin it, went to the bar instead, he watched the game against Italy the other day cos it was Italy, but these are what FIFA is losing, supporters who cared but not any more.

Muney is killing the game, it will die a death and something else will replace footy, it will take time but it will die.

Club football is all we have to hold on to just now, but again money is killing it, the last few years the game in scotland has got better for the supporters of a few clubs, they have won a bit of silverware, their crowds have gone up, the passion has come back for them, all the while ours did the opposite, but we did something about reversing that cos we could.

It seems to me that the only nations that are passionate about their nation are the ones who are the poorest on the planet, can’t fathom that one but it’s what I can see.

Inter footy is the footy we had years ago before we had a collection of billionaires collect the best players in the world and put them in the same team, See Barca and Real Madrid.

They have cheated financial fair pay rules and collected (and managed to find the financial clout to pay) the worlds top talent and display them in the same team.

And they do this every week.

Then you get international football. Which is supposed to be the best of the nations talent.

But it cant and will never light a candle to the teams of the financially doped elite.

Its only a matter of time before the larger nations (see the nations of the champions league, Engerland, Germany, Spain etc) manage to come up with a legal argument to allow nations to collect the best players from other nations and pass them off as their own.

Its in the post and the TV rights will push it through…..

Aye it’s in the pipeline, sadly.

Had a sort of an argument with a Real supporter the other week, he was mocking us cos Barca humped us, couldn’t get him to understand that the score was normal due to the financial disparity, I admit the lanuague barrier came into the equation, but he knew fine well what I was on about.
