Great contracts can sink a manager, Acceptable Use Policy

392

There was a time not so long ago when Jackie McNamara was the next big thing in football management. His fall from a pedestal at Dundee United to inglorious resignation this morning at York City came swiftly, precipitated by the loss of three players to Celtic in 2015.

Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci were brought to Celtic last year by Ronny Deila. Their departure precipitated United’s fall from competitive a SPL club to relegation candidates a few months into last season, costing Jackie his job in October.

As with a lot in football, there’s more Magic Circle than centre circle going on. What you see happen with players distracts the eye from what’s going on behind the scenes. In April 2015 Dundee United went so far as to issue a statement confirming bonuses were payable to their manager on recent transfers. A manager’s contract is none of our business, it’s exceptional that it was made so, but this gives us an insight into what was going on between the McNamara and United at the time.

Jackie was finished at United from that moment, not that he was blameless. In a few years he took a club brimming with potential and put it on a path to relegation. They will remember him at York City as an unmitigated failure, with few redeeming features.

Resentment brewed at United in the months between Armstrong and Mackay-Steven leaving, and that April statement. He should have left at the time, and should only have made trips to York as a tourist (go, it’s a great city).

His early work at Partick Thistle and United marked him out, but his choice of mentors and collaborators didn’t do him any favours. That United contract worked for him on paper, but it was a burden on his career.  He’ll be lucky to pick up as high a profile a job as Thistle or United, which is a pity, as he’s a better manager than his CV currently suggests.

Prestonpans, I had flicked over then flicked back even quicker when I saw the sleekit one’s horrible , bulbous coupon.

Aye , Celino’s are victim of their own success. Top notch grub.

  3. Just spent 30mins on phone at 13p per min to buy ticker for Sevco game. £7 to post out and £1.50 booking fee. Absolute joke Celtic.

  4. I have never been to Celinos so cannot comment. Coia`s on match days, though is an excellent place. The food is straightforward but always perfectly pleasant. The main factor, for me, is the general atmosphere. The place buzzes without being brash and reminds me of the archetypal New York`s Italian Cafe/restuarant .

  6. I’m organising a Race Night as a Fund Raiser for St Mary’s in The Calton (so Fr Tom informed me last week). We’ve had a few and they are good wee nights. If anyone is interested in going, it’s on Friday 18th November. Tickets £5 each and usually involves some free grub as well – pie’n’peas, some home baking etc.

First, to understand how great an appointment Brendan is, it bears looking at how we might have got instead.

And secondly, it’s a good night for taking a look at the Sevco transfer policy, the one they tried to copy from us, but which they fundamentally, and unbelievably, misunderstood …

  9. What kind of Celtic supporters are we becoming in this modern 21st century?

All this talk of cafés and coffees and pre-match lunches etc. What happened to going to the boozer and sinking 6 or more pints before the game? And at least 2 nips if you’re a REAL supporter.

Next they’ll be wanting a café inside the stadium footprint and instead of pies n bovril at half-time, it will be prawn sandwiches and Highland Spring (diet).

It’s the thin end of the wedges I tells ya.

VFR800A8 – I won’t be able to make the race night but is it one of these where you can “buy” a horse beforehand?

The only thing u can blame Celtic for is the length of the call mate.

The delivery fee is for it being. Sent recorded delivery.

This is down to Hampden/SPFL as apparently they won’t send out duplicates if lost.

You’re right though, it’s a poor show but Celtic ain’t to blame this time

Fish supper and Barolo is an interesting combo.

Noticed you like a nice Amarone too. Haven’t had one for ages.

Claudio who owns Celino’s and Alfredo at Coia’s are both good guys who have turned the original shops into something special and given that part of the east end a real boost.

Their culinary delights might not satisfy a real foody like WDH but they know their clientele and give them what they want. Full of admiration for their determination.

They were consumed at different times; the fish supper first and the Barolo an hour or so later.

Tesco are now doing a fairly decent Amarone for £12.50; it’s not quite a Mass Amarone Costasera, but a pleasant Saturday night swally.

I agree that both Claudio and Freddo have produced two great eateries for the East Enders. Quality food and service in both places!
