Green/Whyte enablers, racism and Ibrox security

1089

Have you ever seen a ‘Rangers’ director pushed by a journalist on a question he dodged before yesterday?  It’s never happened.  STV’s Peter Smith did something no journalist in the history of Scottish football has done before, pressed a question when the man in charge at Ibrox dodged the initial inquiry.  Smith dismissed the deserved praise that came his way last night by suggesting it’s what a journalist does.  True, but refreshing nonetheless.

I was reminded last night that Green’s examination by the old media has come earlier in his journey to the bottom that Craig Whyte’s did last season.  Whyte was being backed by some, let’s call them enablers, right up until the week before Rangers went into administration.  Unfortunately for Green some in the media, and perhaps a few in the support, were embarrassed by their backing of Whyte last year and will not repeat the mistake.

Apart from the aforementioned Green, I have only ever known one person to use the word “darkie” (I missed 1970s ‘comedians’).  He was born in the first years of the 20th century, too young for the first war and too old to be conscripted for the second.  Well into his 90s, I heard him say “there are a lot of darkies on TV these days”.  He was reprimanded and immediately realised what he had done.  An apology and a period of over-compensation followed.

It falls to SFA president Campbell Ogilvie to ensure that such language has no place in Scottish football.  Disciplinary proceedings should be issued, unless, of course, the SFA view the matter in a different light.  Any future appearance of a Charles Green image on a banner or effigy at Celtic Park, or use of the words ‘Our New Hero’ to describe him, should not be regarded as an endorsement of his views, only his work in football.

Celtic minstrels will write songs about him, I have heard the words “man-love” being used this week.

Will Newco stay active long enough for Craig Whyte’s security over Ibrox, crystallised by yesterday’s ruling that he owes Ticketus circa £17m and therefore had a piece of the action at Rangers after all, to have an effect?  There are so many icebergs around Newco probably not.

It was interesting to hear Manchester United’s endorsement of Newco as a potential English Premier League club being debated on STV.  Now out of Europe, Manchester United were asked if they would play a fundraiser at Ibrox later this month.  I hope Green’s comments on the interview don’t spoil relations.

I was pleased to hear we were drawn at home for the next game but for pity’s sake, sending Motherwell to Tannadice the day before defeats the point. This is a complete failure.

Add this to the fact that Fraser Forster’s biggest fan is making his First Holy Communion when we are at home to St Johnstone on 11 May and you get a taste of the frustration in our house last night.

He realises the importance of his First Communion but thought we could cancel the party afterwards and have an alternative celebration at Celtic Park. We’ll distract him on the day…..

As many of you are already aware, the Celtic Trust have arranged a process whereby, if you live in Scotland, you can easily contact your MSP to back the FAC call for an inquiry into policing at the Gallowgate last month.  You can find the information and template here, go do it.

  4. Response from George Adam – my SNP MSP – talk about evading the issue

Many thanks for your email raising your concerns.

There was a topical question on police handling of unauthorised protests on the 19th March, you can view the Official Report here.

The Police, Public Order and Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 2006 sets out the rules regarding the need to obtain permission to march through the street. It is a requirement that an application for permission to march be submitted to the local authority no later than 28 days before any event. As the Cabinet Secretary made clear in responding to the topical question, this is intended to ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to protect the interests both of those who wish to march and of members of the public who might be caught up in an unplanned event.

The protest on Saturday 16th March did not have an application to march and permission had not been sought.

The regulation of marches and parades in Scotland is the responsibility of local authorities. The Scottish Government believes that each local authority, in consultation with the police, is in the best position to decide whether a particular event should go ahead and if any restrictions should be placed on that event.

The Cabinet Secretary stated to parliament in March that full video footage cannot currently be released due to its role in on-going criminal proceedings. Referrals have been made to the Crown Office and in the first instance will progress through the court system.

Decisions on operational policing are a matter for the Chief Constable of Police Scotland. If you want to raise concerns regarding the police response to the march you should contact Chief Constable Stephen House at Police Scotland headquarters. If you are not satisfied with the response received, the matter can be referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) who has responsibility to oversee complaints handling procedures in the Scottish police.

You may be interested to know that in relation to calls for in inquiry into the events on the 16th March, Councillor Graeme Hendry (SNP), leader of the opposition group on Glasgow City Council wrote to Councillor Phillip Braat (Labour), who convened the Strathclyde Police Authority prior to the move to a single service, about an investigation into events that occurred on the 16th March. The request for an investigation was rejected by Councillor Braat.

    My response…..

    Dear Mr Adam,

    Thank you for your response.

However I am somewhat confused and disappointed by it. You do not seek to address my concerns in any way and seem to want to direct me to a number of parties instead. Furthermore the link you have sent me doesn’t work.

I should also point out that I was not questioning the legality of the protest and yet this is a point you seem to want to tell me about in great detail. Regardless of whether permission was sought or obtained the police actions were clearly not justified (I have seen a great deal of evidence of this which is freely available on YouTube). The criminalisation of football supporters is unacceptable and the treatment of a small group of supporters who were causing no issues to the general public was appalling and the police tactics unacceptable. I attended the football game on that day and on my way to the ground it was perfectly clear that there was a massive police presence in the backstreets around Crown Point. This flies in the face of the Police statement that they were simply responding to the protest. This was a planned and orchestrated action by the police. I am concerned that our Scottish Government appears to be complicit in this harassment of law abiding football supporters and that the bill past over a year ago now is being used to victimise and criminalise ordinary supporters.

Your reference to me complaining to the police and then the council are especially disappointing. I wrote to you as my elected representative because I believe that the root cause of these issues is The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act. This was introduced and passed by your party and yet you seem unwilling to address my concerns directly.

I would like to know what your personal stance is on these matters given you are my elected representative?

I look forward to your reply

    Yours Sincerely

Robert Tressell, I think and hope your assesment is accurate.

    ========================================

During Oldcos demise I simply looked at the facts and kept repeating that mantra – look to the facts. The conclusion from looking at facts (with no inside information, just what everyone else knew) was they would be liquidated.

The facts that we know so far indicate either a very slow rise to something their followfollowers will not accept – mediocrity – or death.

I prefer the latter as the best remedy for the whole of Scottish football and society. we could get on with rebuilding both without people in high places wanting to protect them.

9,000 at Firhill tonight. Brilliant. The decent Sevconians who genuinely like football might swell the ranks of other clubs supports. The others can follow Motherwell and Kilmarnock.

  12. Another reply to the letter:

Thank you for writing to me.

I have received very many of the same letter and perhaps had not made my position clear in some of my earlier responses As the letter says the gathering was unauthorised.

Let me try to make my position clear

I am in favour of peaceful and authorised demonstrations where the organisation of the demonstration is guaranteed by the demonstrators themselves. The authorisation and the organisation then would ensure that any demonstration will allow the views of the demonstrators to be heard undisturbed and that there will be complete avoidance of conflict or violence. I abhor conflict or violence from whatever source.

Thank you for getting in touch

I don’t know if minty will be involved, but a cleansing is the aim.

Park and a few others have cash, and would have a line of credit, agreed it would take time, but they have no other choice, it’s either a clean debt free hun, or nothing, and all the effort they have gone to so far, they won’t stop now, just my opinion mind.

  19. Robert Tressell, again agreed, my guess for them is death, the Followers won’t accept mediocrity. They will chase, demand instant success, gratification. Finances don’t allow that. The best they should aim for is a slow rebuilding of a team, it wont happen, no warchest no season ticket sales.

Agreed. At the time of Whyte’s takeover I was of the opinion, that they could only be saved by someone who came in and paid everything that was owed fair and square and kept operating within the SPL as the same team. Anything else and they were done it might be slow but they’d never fully recover and die. Well it’s happening quicker than I could have imagined.

HOW DID THE ST MIrren Meeting Go today any word ?

    ==========================

Now, there is a possibility, postulated before: a buyout of St Mirren, the end of Sevco, St Mirren start playing at a new stadium in, say, Govan, and over time change things like, erm, their colours, their name.

I would imagine they would lose the St from the title while packing the boxes for the hop along the motorway to their new home.

It’s a possibility. But again, it would be a pale shadow of what it was they were replacing.

And I don’t think it’s a runner with the Sevco Klan
