Hartson’s anti-analysis

563

You’ve got to love John Hartson, a subscriber to the ‘All we need is three new players’ belief structure.  This is a common sort of anti-analysis which crops up regularly in place of any actual thought.

There are three outfield areas of a team, defence, midfield and attack, and if you can only improve each area, you’ll have a better team.  Go figure.  Hartson told us we need “a central defender; a creative midfield player and a striker”.  It’s as though the reality hasn’t occurred that any team in the world wouldn’t improve with the addition of a better player in each area of the field.

Yes, we need a central defender, but we need a right back too.  We need a striker, but, I could argue two strikers would be handy.  I’ve no idea how Brendan Rodgers is planning to play tactically so we might need a midfielder.  Or two.

Pretty much every team in Europe will be having the same conversation right now.  John could usefully reflect that it’s not actual headcount we need, we have the numbers, it’s players able to improve the team we need.  That’s the magic ingredient everyone in the game hopes for.

Lincoln Red Imps captain, Roy Chipolina, is well within his rights to talk up their chances of knocking Celtic out of the Champions League.  They hold the lead and it will take three goals to settle nerves among the home support tomorrow.  It could be a tense occasion…….

The conundrum for any Celtic manager is to find some way of reconciling the idea that we can attract world class players to a European backwater league.

Nobody that I know expects Celtic to attract world class players.

However some of expect us to attract fewer costly bingers than we seem to.

  2. Those three players we need?

Forget the bestest league in the world and scour Spain and Italy for two players. A thirty year old center back and a 26/27 year old defensive mid, both of whom are educated in the appropriate dark arts of their respective required skill set.

The third is up for grabs.

No need for another striker. Leigh is going install himself swiftly (again) as our first choice. Young Dembele himself has been quoted as saying he was astounded at the ability and work rate of Leigh- there’s your mentor son, watch and and learn from a professional.

Perhaps John Park could drive over to Hamilton and have a word with its newest resident, the fabulously bearded one, who has a Celtic crest tattooed on his heart. I’m sure he could suggest more than one suitable candidates for the open positions.

Rangers supporters are furious with the gaffe by Apple

RANGERS fans are furious with iPhone’s Siri – after the Apple application claimed the club is just four years old.

The voice-activated programme says the Ibrox outfit was founded in 2012 following the Glasgow team’s financial troubles.

And supporters – who are regularly taunted by rival fans after Rangers went into liquidation four years ago – are fuming with the gaffe.

The club was actually founded in 1872 but when Siri is asked the question, it responds: “The answer is Wednesday, December 19, 2012.”

Apple declined to comment but a source close to the firm said: “It’s not a deliberate attempt to deceive or mislead.

“If you ask Siri when ‘Glasgow’ Rangers was founded it presents you with links to sites including Wikipedia that references the 1872 date.”

December 19, 2012, is the day when shares in Rangers began trading on the London Stock Exchange.

  4. And

If there is English players, or Irish English based players, holding out for that dream big money move to Hull City. (Yeah makes me laugh also.)

Then Celtic kindly advise agents of said players that time waits for no man.

Let’s widen the net….. I’m sure whether they ply their trade in Belgium, Holland, France, Poland, or where ever, there will be an abundance of centre halfs , of a better quality than Ambrose, Boyata, O’Connell.

  5. How about this for an idea for a lead article? Rather than ‘dissing’ an old war horse of a player, who is as entitled to his opinion as anyone on here let us have a genuine analytical breakdown of how the custodians of ‘our’ club have allowed the standard of playing staff to fall to such an unacceptable level that we were humiliated by a part time team from Gibraltar? Or how a young relatively inexperienced manager with a modicum of success in one of Europe’s smaller leagues, a guy with no previous knowledge of the SPL, is given one of the biggest jobs in British football? And why that aforementioned manager was allowed to stay when it was blatantly obvious he wasn’t up to the task. I know those topics have been discussed on here Ad nauseam yet I can’t seem to recall there being a lead article mentioning any of these concerns or one that that even mentions the calamitous and grief stricken course the ‘current’ club custodians are leading us on. I am of the opinion that it is just a wee smidge more important than who BBJ thinks Celtic should sign.

  6. I actually had the the Motherwell /Sevco game on in the background. The Mothers had an absolute barrow load of gilt edged chances. In fairness Sevco had a few too and probably should have had a penalty/ It could have been 7 all.

I think it would be silly to dismiss any opponent in the League however as long as we get ourselves in order, I wouldn’t fear anyone.

We probably have enough in our existing squad, if played in proper positions to win the SPL but would struggle in Europe. In any case you should strive to improve team every year. To me it’s all about Celtic if we get it right which we should we have nothing to fear.

Totally agree Ernie i am a unionist, as a member of a trade union i am proud to be so

I also enjoy the union when joining together with fellow CQN’rs at Celtic games and various social functions, you should try that definition of being a unionist

    Owen,

    The following is a quote from Neil McGuinness, previously a Scout at Celtic;

“If it’s not making profit, it’s not working. So it’s as black and white as you can get. If it doesn’t work, you’re not going to be making money, especially not in Scotland.”

Over the two years RD was at Celtic we show a profit of £13m approx, this doesn’t include loan fees and undisclosed fees ( see post at 1.36pm.) Loans and undisclosed fees work both ways, in and out, so maybe we made a loss or profit? Who knows?

That money came from FF,VVD etc, who were purchased before RD’s time.

We are not in the EPL and have ‘missed’ the revenue provided by the Sevco matches…’£10m pa since 2012′ (PLawwell).

Despite that we are entitled to expect a professional scouting and recruitment process.

Signings over the last three years don’t support that.

Maybe it’s time we put quality before the profit motive.

If you have time have a look at the signings on Page 1.

There were 23 in RD’s two seasons.

Where’s the profit going to come from, if that’s Celtic’s aim?

  11. SAINT STIVS SAYS SACK THE BOARD……

And what had the previous Rangers manager done? We can cherry pick bits here and there but he has improved them massively. Some of my Brentford supporting mates reckon he’s pretty good.

Am I saying he’s Mourinho? No. Am I saying Rangers are a top side? No.

What I’m warning against is complacency, people telling us how rubbish Rangers are because they only won 1-0 away to Motherwell while we’re losing to Red Imps.

Let’s get our house in order – THEN we can laugh at Rangers. Failure to do so will see these words come back to bite us….

  12. Is criticising Hartson for saying we need three players a subtle way of softening the blow when we don’t sign three players? Just asking…..

  13. !!BADA BING!! on 19TH JULY 2016 7:19 PM

    Exactly! It’s not rocket science.

There are a wheen of able professionals in those leagues that would gladly come to Paradise for a chance to win medals, and a wee shot at qualifying for the champions league.

One CB, the defensive mid, the no. 9 and no. 10 are positions that should always be experienced, grizzled pros. Pick your Captain from one of the first two.

Build your project up around the remaining six.

Goalies should never be a project either obviously.

  15. It is my view that we need to reduce the size of the playing staff and the wage bill BEFORE we see relatively expensive signings.

    We have a problem.

A few weeks ago packie bonner was getting it hot and heavy on here for daring to suggest that celtic invest some money on players. The audacity of that uncle tom toady back of the bus forelock tugging msm dupe! !!!.

Now another ex player dares to suggest something similar. Why the very idea! !.

I am just glad we have a level headed fellow like peter lawwell controlling the purse strings rather than those 2 idiots.

Otherwise we would end up like rangers.

Now let’s all laugh at rangers, oh I know they beat us in the cup semi final, but did you hear their stadium is falling down and uefa are going to officially declare them dead, ha ha that will teach him.

  19. You could also argue that the much maligned Warbo is doing exactly that- bringing in seasoned professionals who know the score.

I don’t share the mirth over them bringing in so called has beens. He is surrounding his younger players with experience that have run the course.

If we field a team of mostly projects versus them, combined with mibbery, I see some very difficult games ahead.

That’s before their war chest runs dry again that is.

    Sid,

I don’t know if it was said or not. I was actually trying to do them a favour by factoring it into the thinking over the last couple of years, re-fall in turnover.

For what it’s worth Glasgow Herald, 31st August 2014…

“When Rangers went down we took £100 off the season tickets,” Lawwell said. “So that is £4m for two years. The Rangers games, that is at least another £3m. The fact there is a perception among our supporters that there is no competition and you are going to win anyway, and you don’t go to the game, so it could be £10m. We could have lost £10m a year, quite easily, on the back of Rangers going down.”

Been saying for long enough that we need a few stalwarts in the team players who have been and gone and done it, players with no sell on value, but the value to the club, including the younger players well outweighs the sell on.

Pity it doesn’t fit the policy, some are so blinded by the policy they can’t see what’s in front of them.
