Historic Scottish Cup Finals in 37, 65 and 85 portents for Celtic

409

Queen’s Park, Rangers (twice) and Aberdeen have all won the Scottish Cup three consecutive seasons, a feat Celtic emulated in last year’s final, coming from behind to beat Hearts 2-1.

Queen’s Park lifted the trophy 10 times in total but five of those wins came in seven seasons, between 1879-80 and 1885-86.  Defeat to eventual winners Dumbarton in the 1883 quarter final was their only reversal in the competition in five years.

Rangers completed their first hat trick in the Cup between seasons 1933-34 and 1935-36.  That run came to an end when Celtic won the Cup in 1937 in the final against Aberdeen, famous for being the highest attended game in European club football ever, 147,365 souls.

Again Rangers won the Cup three times, between seasons 1961-62 and 1963-64, and again Celtic picked up the trophy to end the run in 1965, in what is probably a more famous final against Dunfermline.  THAT header from Billy McNeill and two from Bertie Auld won the Cup for Celtic after seven years without a trophy and gave an indication into what was in store for the Jock Stein era that started two months earlier.

During the early 80s Aberdeen came to Glasgow and regularly bossed the occasion.  They won three successive Scottish Cups, two against Rangers in 1983 and 1984, and one against 10-man Celtic (Gordon, cough) in 1984, before another famous Scottish Cup Final and another Celtic win.

This time, the 100th final.  Dundee United took the lead, before that “piece of history” from Davie Provan and Frank McGarvey’s flying header.  Thousands of us got in for free as police opened the gates in what, incredibly, was a non-ticket game, a practice that ended in disaster four years later at Hillsborough.

Celtic are the first team to win three and then reach a fourth Scottish Cup Final, chasing their 40th success in the tournament.  Opponents, Hearts, hope to win their eighth Scottish Cup.  History calls for both teams, but the rule is clear, since the 19th century, Celtic win the Scottish Cup after any team wins for three successive seasons.  Any portent in a storm.

  2. I am a bit worried tonight.

For the last 7 weeks or so, CQN is bombarded with names that tell us how we , the celtic, are shite.

Lennon, Kennedy, Strachan, the coaching staff, they are all shit.

Something called “the rangers” have better coaches (never won anything0, a coach behind the coach who is a couching genius inproving the players by X .

They are on an invincible run, we are rubbish.

lets see how it goes from tomorrow,

go win on sunday celtic, my celtic, my manager, my captain.

go win it, you got this,

  3. Bada………………….

  4. Conor McCarthy’s dramatic injury-time winner ended Rangers’ 27-game unbeaten start to the season and sent St Mirren through to a Scottish League Cup semi-final against Livingston.

The hosts rallied from Connor Goldson’s early opener to lead after two Jamie McGrath goals – one from the penalty spot – either side of half-time.

Steven Davis looked to have forced extra time in the 88th minute after James Tavernier’s free-kick hit a post, but McCarthy converted when Allan McGregor parried a Richard Tait header.

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin was sent off for over-zealous celebrations amid the late bedlam, but his side were deserving of the stunning upset over their Premiership rivals.

Victory sends the Paisley side – now undefeated in 10 games – through to the semi-final for the first time since they lifted the trophy in 2013.

They face Livingston at Hampden on the weekend of 23-24 January, with St Johnstone meeting Hibernian in the other last-four tie.

  6. Saint lets get it right, before lenny changed the personal we were shit and stale, so let’s be realistic.

We all knew they were shit but just we were shiterrrrrr.

After the last two games I’m starting to believe again, I thought our defence attacked every header between the 18 yard line and half way line and won everything.

I also thought we solved the right back position and not to dis SB, I think SORO has been a breath of fresh air as well as Turnbull.

I’m absolutely delighted tonight, but let’s not go mental thinking some of the criticism of our team hasn’t been justified.

Anyway, let’s enjoy this moment and we can discuss tomorrow.

    Enjoy your night 👍🏼

  8. I would temper with caution that Sevco are going to suddenly fall apart its the first defeat in 28 games, very impressive, we certainly can’t afford them matching that run next.

Losing away 3 2 to an in form St Mirren is no comparison to getting beat 2 nil at home to a woeful Ross County, bottom of the league and lost every game since.

The biggest issues to fix are still at Celtic park not Sevco, especially if we keep picking the same midfield that is repeatedly failing us.

If NFL reverts to the previous midfield on the provision that the players who got us to the cup final deserve the chance to win it. Then that must mean the players who have won us the last 2 games and improved us deserve to start the following league games.

    I do agree.

some performances and losses were dreadful, and it was players not manager.

i never miskicked a ball or got bet by another player 1-2-1 and would say that was the managers fault.

    anyways

the few huns i converse with me said this is “a glorious revolution”,

a rhetoric meant to their own history.

i was in the athlone post office last summer, i had ten postcards or whatever, 30 cents each, wanted to give the family a souveneir post mark, went ot the desk , and the lady said it was 2 euro each to send them.

  18. Saint I love lenny the same as you, but I can only believe what my eyes see.

You are correct about an over reaction, but again, we can only go off what we seen in the past.

I dont blame lenny, I want Kennedy out of the equation. Rightly or wrongly, just my own personal opinion. The defence was leaking goals down the right and he is supposed to be the defensive coach.I’m only interested in the season we are playing not past glories.

Look and I mean this in the most beautiful way. I believe we can still win the 10, but I also believe we are big enough to qualify for ECL football every year and let the wee diddy teams play in the EL.

On another point, does anyone else think the SFA directive tonight was to play the game fairly and that’s why the hun ref phoned in sick?

aye, i get that, however, when actually playing the game, did you ever hold a position , stop running or just not match an opponent because the coach told you.

they are all professional players, why did they do so many things so wrong. so often
