History in a game

674

I know we met them in a European Cup semi-final in 1972, but the forthcoming tie against Inter Milan is all about the wonderful heritage we were gifted in 1967.  La Grande Inter, as Internazionale, then the greatest team Italy had known, had won two of the previous three European Cups and were controversially denied in the semi-final of the other.  They won three of the previous four Italian titles, denied the fourth on a play-off, and topped the table with two weeks of the Italian season to go.

They were an awesome team with gifted strikers but it was the defence which marked them out; this was a team who didn’t concede goals, when they took the lead, they kept it.

Simpson, Craig, Gemmell; Murdoch, McNeill and Clark; Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox, and Jock Stein, not only killed La Grande Inter, but did so, so comprehensively, they forced Inter, and the rest of the Italian game, to change their ways.  Catenaccio, the suffocating, ultra-defensive system, was finished.

For Europe, the consequences were profound.  Celtic, with their wave after wave of attack; 45 attempts on goal in a European final; were celebrated everywhere.  The drift towards caution stopped, teams realised the very best defensive sides could be beaten into submission by sheer talent.  In the two subsequent decades the dominant Latin countries of Italy, Spain and Portugal, who had won all previous European Cups, would win the trophy only once.

Football fans across the globe, not just Celtic fans, will want to be there when the teams meet in a game which represents History, not just our history, Europe’s History.

We’ll talk later today on moves being put on the SFA at the moment.  ‘Here we go again…….’

  1. Needless to say the apologists jump on the moral high ground bringing in the food banks, it’s an education on behaviour and manners they need, the food banks are just a pawn in there game, your either a good cause and getting on with it, or your using it as a rung on a ladder to make your political point, trying to take the bad look of yourself, and your not kidding me on, the sooner they goo the better. IMO

That change of attitude at SFA would not surprise me nor the response to Ogilvie who by now everyone at SFA and SPFL should know set RFC in the ebt road.

It adds to my post yesterday which I’ll repeat now.

I think there has been a significant change in attitude to Saving Rangers At All Costs”

Now that the bill for that approach is being served the fear of losing “Rangers as was” is nothing as strong as it was in 2012.

Fear of the financial consequences and reaction of angry bears is no longer a factor.

In fact you could argue that the actual experience of the former and it’s impact on TRFC themselves has had a sobering effect on the latter.

The SFA are in a stronger position to bargain with Ashley than they were with CG.

The SFA always had the power to prevent “Rangers” continuing in any form under licensing rules, but it was a bargaining chip that never saw the table for fear of the consequences.

Now they could make a licence dependent on conditions they set that would be part of a public agreement that not only “Rangers” fans would welcome because it guarantees no more instability, but the supporters of other clubs would accept, subject to verifiable monitoring.

This policy represents a way out of the mess our game finds itself in because there has been no transparency or accountability or courage.

Domestic FFP rigorously policed would provide the kind of assurances that the days of pursuit of UEFA geld to keep a club alive have been well and truly consigned to history.

This hard nosed do it our way approach would apply whether it’s Ashley or New Blues riding on to the scene.

Time the SFA grew a set and those without gonads moved aside to let real men of integrity take over.

Big article on Martin Odeggard in the leading Italian Sports Daily today.

Not done their research very well because they fail to mention that RD was his manager at Stromgodset.

…or that he is a friend of the boy’s father.

They did say that Stefan Johansen is in regular contact with the lad ‘tho.

They then produced a list of possible destinatários:

    Barca, Real, Bayern…and Celtic.

  5. SFA appeal tribunal stands by Aleksandar Tonev racism ban

Celtic winger Aleksandar Tonev’s seven-match ban will stand, with a Scottish Football Association appeal tribunal having upheld October’s original guilty verdict against the Bulgarian.

That judicial panel found Tonev, 24, guilty of using “offensive, insulting and abusive language of a racist nature” towards Aberdeen’s Shay Logan.

A tribunal heard appeal submissions on the player’s behalf on 4 December.

On Tuesday, Celtic manager Ronny Deila continued to back his player.

He reiterated the club’s intention to take their appeal as far as necessary.

Earlier this month, Deila said: “We don’t believe Aleksandar is a racist.

“It’s been word against word and they are thinking the other guy is telling the truth and Tonev is lying – and, for me, that’s not how a court should be. For me, it should be real proof.

“This is a very serious accusation and you have to absolutely know you’re right.

“If it’s still going to go on and there’s no proof, we will have to do everything we can to help Alex.”

The members of the tribunal adjourned to consider the evidence and have now published a 3,500-word document outlining how they came to their decision.

Tonev joined Celtic on loan from Aston Villa in August, with the incident with Logan taking place in a Scottish Premiership match at Celtic Park in September.

During the match, Logan complained to referee Bobby Madden that Tonev had made a racist remark towards him and also reported it to Dons captain Mark Reynolds

  6. On the move today, no access to MSM. Just got a text to say Tonev lost appeal

  10. I read the media speculation that the Norwegian wonderkid is Bayern bound, but it seems to be based on nothing more than the fact that he is currently training with them.

He has also trained with Liverpool and other clubs.

Celtic are still big players in this.

  11. Read Bundoran Bhoy. Had I been patient, I’d have saved myself the trouble. Must say I’m surprised and disappounted at decision. Hope Tonev sues them. He has to sit out now till end of Feb. He would better off going back to Villa.

  12. TD67 wrote “it’s an education on behaviour and manners they need, the food banks are just a pawn in there game”

In my opinion that observation is spot on.

  13. Directions to San Siro

Well I was there in 1970, based in the square next to catherderal, with all of the Edinburgh St Pat’s guys.

Don’t remember how we got to the stadium, we must have walked.

Absolutely don’t remember how we got back, but woke up in a telephone box early next morning, somewhere near the city centre

    Great trip, despite the result.

  14. Interesting to see what Celtic do now that the Tonev appeal has been thrown out once the legal people have read the decision document?

  15. 3500 word document?

    It’s hardly “War and Peace”

    Get after these middens Celtic!

    NOW!!!!!

  16. Tonev’s lawyers will/should rip the SFA a new one, no proof what so ever and found guilty, they could have played the Boydyachenco not proven card and chose not to, very very strange indeed.

  17. Aleksandar Tonev Appeal Tribunal

By: Newsroom Staff on 16 Dec, 2014 13:22

CELTIC Football Club is extremely disappointed by the outcome of the Scottish FA’s Appeal Tribunal.

We do not consider that any player should be found guilty of such a grave offence on the basis of the evidence presented in this case. Celtic Football Club will be approaching the Scottish FA to seek to address this issue.

We would like to make it clear that at no stage was it ever suggested that Shay Logan had made any false allegations. However, Aleksandar Tonev’s position consistently has been that he did not say the words that were alleged to have been said and that he is not a racist. Celtic Football Club has enjoyed an excellent relationship with Aberdeen Football Club and this, of course, will continue.

As we have said many times before, racism has no place in football and as a Club which has been open to all ever since its formation in 1888, Celtic abhors racism of any kind.

Clearly, Aleksandar continues to have our full support.

I’ve been trying since the Boyd incident to get a reply from the SFA regarding how they came to a ‘ not proven ‘ verdict , needless to say I’ve not had a satisfactory response.
