Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

  1. Aye. We’re being asked to keep the faith in the incompetents running our club into the ground.

Living in the past is all very well but take a look at where we are now and where we are headed.

Looks like the bet I placed on Steve Clarke a couple of months ago is still on then ? It would have to be a late appointment which would not be good for the season’s preparations.

He put up a blog post at 10.30 this morning, a good two hours ahead of normal, knowing he’d have another one to put up later.

So Celtic supporters are to blame now for the disconnect, hahahahaha

    _____

Celtic supporters live on their knees handing over their money no matter the deceit conceit ignorance entitlement smugness arrogance corruption collusion and brazen brassed neckerry of the aloof PLC pantomime that Celtic supporters financially vote into office through season book subscriptions.

Celtic supporters accepted all of the above when we were lording it over a one horse league for over a decade.

Maybe there would have to be a steward’s enquiry into who is the most arrogant conceited entitled corrupt smug and brazenly brass necked – the PLC or the supporters?

  13. Guys let’s not all fall out.

    We have to move on.

We all have our thoughts and our thoughts might not be shared by everyone or anyone, sometimes in life we just have to agree that not everyone thoughts are the same.

As long as you all agree with me 😂👍😂👍🍻

  14. Now that the pandemic is over and large gathetings allowed we could gather at George square to show our discontent with the way our club is being run.

    Its allowed innit?

    Naw ok.

Must be hundreds arrested by now after all there is loads of cctv around Glasgow city centre

If only we could change sport from football to turd polishing we could recruit an unbeatable 11 from on here… with P67 as Scott Brown.

Alas, the first question the SMSM will ask of the new manager is ‘how does it feel to be second choice’ will resonate well with the hard of thinking.

As I intimated earlier, unless those in charge (note I don’t say ‘Board’) were sure Howe was a done deal, he/they should never have allowed the story to grow arms and legs.

From a more general perspective, it’s very illuminating to see how a really, really, really bad, lazy decision (the reappointment of Neil Lennon) can undo years and years of progress.

    A lesson for us all.

CRC- good to see you on here. Drop in more often!

  19. Personally, I’ve never been convinced that Howe was the answer . Certainly, he had been an EPL manager but had nothing like the track record of, say, Brendan Rodgers.

I’m quite sure he would have been competent enough but perhaps not the best fit for this particular gig in this particularly unforgiving place.

  20. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Meant to add…hopefully the new guy’s a winner and the SMSM gives him only inspiration👍

That said, this whole season has been an absolute shit-show.

Everyone and their granny could see the car crash unfolding before their eyes.

It should and cannot happen again.

  22. WHO will ever know if Eddie H would have been successful or not but the length of time spent to finally be refused , does not reflect well on the board regardless of reason

All is not lost however as second choice might just be the perfect fit,you never know

One thing’s for sure he is going to need all the support he can get

  23. Has David Moyes resigned a contract with West Ham ?

God bless you both, made me smile on a day like today!

  27. didn’t think we could be anymore shambolic than we have been this season but Lawell and co seem to be able to stoop to further depths every time. From messing up the Toney signing, standing by Lennon too long (he should hav gone after Sparta 4-1), messing up the Davies signing, the Dubai disaster, and now this.

    There’s only two ways out of this now;

    1) we go big and bring in someone bigger/better than Howe – Rafa, Ragnick, someone like that; or

    2) we start again and do what we ought to have done for the past 3 months and got a DoF to sort out the football side of the club.

Given how close it is to the start of the season, I think we now need to do both at the same time. A top manager to get us through this season and buy time to get ourselves in order. The new CEO can then also sort out the amateurish work of other parts of the club – PR seems to be done by someone on work experience, the website is shockingly bad, our social media output is ridiculous, our strategy/planning is non-existent, I could go on. The only decisive move taken this year was putting the fences up and removing the Palestine flags – the club have been found wanting at every turn.

But none of that will happen – we’ll get Lawell’s son’s mates from Man City and cross our fingers and hope for them to implode…world class in everything we do? Aye, very good! Just in case, Peter I can dust off my managers list if you’re desperate (which we surely are now)?
