Howe pantomime ends, what now

1566

Two weeks ago, I cautioned that the line being given to Celtic by Eddie Howe, that he was waiting to assemble his backroom team, did not hold water, “This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.”

With his former Bournemouth backroom team now free from football commitments, I understand Howe told Celtic he is unable to convince his team to come to Glasgow and is not prepared to come without them.  I’m not buying that either.  He either has one of the EPL jobs he coveted, or his strength of character is not sufficient for him to cope in Glasgow without a chaperone.  If it is the former, he has strung us along, if the latter, he’s too weak to cope here.  It is the former, surely?

Howe was clearly our first choice and the man a board felt it worthwhile to not only offer a huge contract and the opportunity to recruit the entire backroom team, but to allow him to sit on the pot until the end of May.  Like all these decisions, it was a gamble.  Your view is as good as mine as to whether he was worth the wait.

So where has this left us?  The ponderous time Eddie Howe took allowed a clear preference to emerge if his deal remained unsigned.  You and I will have a weekend in the dark, which is frustrating, but I am not seeing any panic at Celtic Park.  The new guy is not from the EPL circus, we’ll find out soon enough if that is a good thing or not!

Have a good weekend, if that’s possible between the two mood killers of managerial recruitment and lockdowns.

That’s a point who has been letting players go.

How can we be linked with players if we have no manager?

Or is big Pete dabbling again in team matters?

    ————-

No club these days has the manager/coach signing and releasing players, it just doesn’t work like that any more.

  2. fieldofdrams on

JHB at 18.43, fair point, clearly made.

There’s just no way that Howe was the only candidate and so what if we are on to a “second choice”.

I’ve been second choice for a number of jobs and made a staggering success of all of them :-)

But you get my point. I don’t care if the manager is the first or the fifth, eighth, fifteenth choice as long as they are a success for Celtic.

  3. From an article on another blog ———–:

“This afternoon he has reported that it was Celtic who have failed to deliver the backroom staff and that Howe wasn’t overly impressed with our recruitment plans”.

He said on Twitter: “As per some reports in Scotland, looks like Eddie Howe to Celtic is off. His personal terms have been agreed for a while but was subject to getting the backroom staff he wanted which Celtic have been unable to deliver. He wasn’t overly impressed with recruitment plans either.”

    Mmmmm

    D :)

  4. we are a complete and utter shambles of a club , a laughing stock for all and sundry , no how no hope.

  5. I wish we’d brought in dir of football – he should have a big say in the coaching situation. Recruitment has been Celtics major problem more than the manager , imo .

I never wanted Howe – all this panic is baffling as I don’t think he had the experience or credentials for a club as big as celtic.

The board are guilty of waiting instead of standing firm – but its not too late as there are good coaching teams out there. Don’t panic Celtic, stay patient and get the right structure in place.

Are people blaming the attack on Lawwell’s house for Howe not coming actually serious?

Had to check it wasn’t the 1st of April.

    ——-

Are you really saying that finding out the top man of a company you are considering joining may have been the subject of an horrendous attack by rivals would not play on your mind?

That seeing the sectarian based carnage in George Square, which was reported all over the UK, would not alarm you and your family and put you off?

    ————————-

When Maradona was playing for Napoli the mafia had a grip of the politicians, footballers and club owners at the time and prominent people were threatened with assassination.

What happened with Lawwell, although serious, and George Square, were a drop in the ocean compared to Naples.

However it didn’t stop some of the best players in the world from signing for Napoli.

Italian football had problems with corruption and fan violence for many years but it didn’t stop the best players and managers from moving there.

The boards Lawwellesque approach to recruiting a manager has once again made the club a laughing stock.

  7. What club puts out an official statement telling you who is not going to be your new manager.

    Unbelievable.

    Usual suspects on defending Lawwell

  8. It’s irrelevant who we have failed to appoint now and whatever the reason(s). That we have hung our hat on this for such a long time is inexcusable. The incompetence of our board is staggering.

  9. I would respectfully suggest Turkeybhoy change his name to Ottomhan

Unless he’s not given up hope yet

  10. We’re all very angry today, of course we are. But we can’t allow yet another “Move along Timmy, nothing to see here” episode to be quietly ignored. Use some of your anger to demand action from your elected representatives, whoever they are. Pressure them to voice an opinion, take some action. It goes on and on unless enough people take a stand. I have respect for Phil but don’t just sit there expecting him to do all the work.

Please consider contacting your elected representatives – here’s my email to my MSP as a guide. Feel free to copy, develop, improve any way you like.

    Hello XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Phil MacGiolla Bhain, as you may know, is an accredited Irish journalist with an extensive interest in Scottish football. When Police Scotland issued a Tweet on 21 May following alleged sectarian singing by Rangers players, staff and associates, they claimed that “extensive enquiries have been carried out and no criminality has been established” and closed their investigation.

The journalist contacted Police Scotland on 22 May presenting an analysis by a well-qualified and experienced sound engineer of the video which had been widely circulated. This described the various technical investigations the engineer had employed and also stated the following:

“the audio file has no breaks in the waveform …. Glen Kamara (Rangers player) claps his hands 5 seconds into the video; this can clearly be seen in the waveform confirming that this is the original audio recorded along with this video.” The engineer concluded that it was highly unlikely that the audio tape could have been corrupted by an external source in the time given.

The journalist, in his communication with Police Scotland, asked:

“did these enquiries include a digital forensic investigation of the video in question?

If so, was the video in any way tampered with?

Or was it found that the video in question was, in fact, genuine?”

On 23 May, the journalist received this brief reply from Police Scotland:

“In response to your enquiry, we have nothing further to add to the released statement on Friday.”

I find that response wholly unacceptable. The journalist’s questions are entirely reasonable and appropriate in a democratic country and I wish Scottish journalists, especially those covering sports, were as tenacious.

I am writing to you XXXXXXXXXXX to ask whether you are convinced that Police Scotland have investigated this issue thoroughly and then communicated appropriately. I have no chance of receiving any detailed response from Police Scotland and I won’t be wasting time on that.

However I am requesting that you raise this with the new Justice Secretary, asking him to require Police Scotland to offer some clarity as is our democratic right.

    Thanks in anticipation,

  11. The Huddle – Is that not why BR left as someone was meddling in recruitment matters.

He wanted players and did not get them whilst having to play a player someone else has bought.

That model only works for super rich clubs.

AT a club like Celtic the manager has to be the guy who picks the players for someone to buy them.

Otherwise the managers tea is oot.

  12. Do you know what’s even more disgusting? They knew thus appointment wasn’t happening they and wanted fans to purchase season books and take their money.

    Scum.

  13. Who has been identifying the transfer targets for this summer ? Not our knew manager, it would seem. We’re being run like a corner shop.

I suspect the shop keeper is about to be moved sideways rather than shown the door.

  14. oh and stop reading twitter posts from sensationalist journalists who prey on idiots like you! Howe will not be the Celtic manager – end of, stop the girly gossips. We move on and get the team together.

I remember Wim Jansen appointment at a time when we needed a major announcement to stop the 10 – we were all underwhelmed and look what happened.

Sure, the board has dithered but sometimes these situations create history – look back at how Stein became celtic manager – there were twists and turns.

  15. I said ages ago Eddie Howe was a non starter.

He would have come weeks ago if he was coming

or he was totally crazy with a major rebuild to do.

Am I right in thinking that the club never said he was

    coming officially at any point?

I said Steve Clarke ages ago and haven’t changed my

mind. Nothing can be said until after the Euros.

Wim Jansen was a bit of an anomaly. Are you suggesting it’s better to be chaotic and start a huge rebuild just weeks before a CL qualifier rather than months in advance?

  19. MARKIEBHOY on 28TH MAY 2021 7:00 PM

Celtic’s announcement today that talks with Howe have collapsed suggests it was never a “non-starter” and in fact, he was our number one (only) choice heading into June…

AT a club like Celtic the manager has to be the guy who picks the players for someone to buy them.

And what happens if the players the manager identifies would never come to Celtic or Scottish football?

What happens if he only identifies 1 player for a key position with no option B or C?

What if a manager decides a player isn’t worth a new contract, even if everyone else at the club can see it’s the right thing to do?

The manager has enough on his plate managing a squad of players without also expecting them to run your recruitment.

They of course should have a huge say in the type of players we are targeting, but his job is to get the best out of the players at his disposal. That’s what a good coach is for.

  21. we are being kept in the dark, they should be telling us whits happenin.

    cfc plc statement made.

wtf are they making that statement fur, can they no see its embarrasin.

and why are they no making a different statement

  22. prestonpans bhoys on

Backroom staff being the problem, is it the case his preferred choices were not interested in Celtic or Kennedy was part of the deal. If it’s the latter then we really are in big trouble😈

  23. I am as angry as any Celtic supporter. We don’t know the whole story. But, it is very noticeable who is prepared to laugh at Celtic right now. I have already passed a few folk in the town I live in. They have smirked at me. Remember the names. Including some of those on here who seem to be taking a rather strange delight in making smart ass remarks about what has happened.

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

We are hurting, but we will come through this.

  24. when we appoint the new manager! we will get he was always our first choice 😂😂😂!! could always bring back lennie I suppose, surprised he ain’t been snapped up already though!!

  25. Go tell the Spartim on

I often thought we were a corner shop thinking it’s a supermarket where in fact we’re a food stall aspiring to be a corner shop who thinks it’s a supermarket

Obv all of the above would be run better

  26. The Huddle all very good points – but I’m not buying it at a club like ours with resources we have. I think our manager has to be solely responsible for identifying the players he wants after they get reccommended by club scouts.

  27. so a tale from Spain.

Fella who works for me, lives in Alicante, he is a good guy, he was a great hire, and he supported old rangers and the 2nd version.

We have a gentle truce not to banter , as in his words “leave me alone things are bad enough”.

Now his background is a wee bit meandering, his father was a Celtic bus convenor out of Provanmill, a seriously irish name , but they moved to Fife, and somewhere along the line he decided to support the gers.

I think because his best pal is Bud Johnstones boy.

The fella was also a big tartan army type following them everywhere, but that waned.

This morning he told me, pretty excited, the Scotland team are at the golf place for training, taking the boy up to see them (a boy named after a rangers hero from the 60’s, in a second names first way).

So whats app, i saidf any pics form the training camp …………

aye …….. he sends ………. the wean and Keiran Tierney.

Its true the grandchilderen will be celtic supporters.

Howe leaking his side of the story now. Wasn’t impressed with the recruitment plans.

Celtic, true to form, trying to persuade Lewis Hamilton to come up only to present him with a Trabant?

Well, he looked under the hood and said no thanks.

Best we gear ourselves up for a Deila/ Lennon standard manager happy to plod along in the slow lane.

The Bowling Club Committee strikes back!
