Inexplicable talk

647

There can be no doubt that Brendan Rodgers has played his cards very publicly this week.  I don’t know the ins-and-outs of it, but it cannot be over losing a player he could not promise a starting position to.  I’m not buying that, there has to be something we are not seeing.

We have a modestly important league game tomorrow and a hugely important Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, so between now and Wednesday, at the earliest, it would be preferable not to allow this week of internally created negativity to drag on into yet another press conference.

We are also trying to convince Dedryck Boyata and Moussa Dembele to sign new contracts.  You and I know that talk getting in the way these objectives is as inexplicable as it is indulgent.

I wonder what proportion of our players’ wages is from bonuses. £23,000 might not be an outlandish amount if it includes bonuses for getting into the Not the Champions League. You’d need to be fairly confident of your own abilities and those of the people around you to take the risk.

  3. Gary ….25k a week …..you would be daft no to jump at that ….that is peace of mind for a lot of Mcginn,s

Just spoke to my brother, he plays amateur football in Clydebank and grew up with the McGinn family. He says McGinn is on £23k a week at Villa. I very much doubt we matched that.

*aye but he’d get tae pull the hoops over his heid, that’s what big Billy allegedly told Tommy Coyne after he turned us doon as we offered him less than he was getting at Dens Park

Not sure about the £23k but it is a convenient well repeated explanation as to why the transfer never happened given the impact it would have had on existing staff.

In my Opinion had we been pro active after a bit of initial jousting re price,we would have got him before Villa showed interest.

The impact in all of this is not so much the loss of the player, but the loss of internal goodwill and losing the PR which we engaged in.

John McGinn equally does not come out of this well for several reasons.

Onward to Tynecastle, ( In the right end a bonus this time ) Lets hope the team are as fired up as the fans.

  9. As far as I know, CQN was started to combat the negativity of the MSSM towards Celtic. That, naturally enough, would mean that , in the main, Paul67`s articles would be positive. Any negativity would come after disappointing results/news and from a variety of posters as well as from Paul . Importantly, those posters did not feel the need to be negative in EVERY post.

Paul has kept up the tradition of being mainly positive. Now, however, that is seen as him being a mouthpiece for The Board. Indeed, he has been labelled much worse by people who really should not be on a blog which tries to redress the imbalance of a hostile Scottish Press.

Please don`t tell me everyone is allowed an opinion and can criticise where they believe it is justified. I am talking only of those posters who always criticise and never have a good word to say about our Club. Our very successful Club I might add.

  17. We are paying guys well above 23k a week, we need to move with the times to a certain level, if you look at the package for McGinn, fee and salary for 4 years, Armstrong fee has paid for him.If we need to upgrade Forrest, McGregor at the same time, so be it IMO

  18. In regards to Paul67’s and this blog. I have to say I have never seen him delete a post that criticized him personally or his lead article.

Paul allows free expression of opposing views to his provided they are expressed in a reasonably polite manner. No vulgarity and no slander or offensive behavior. It is to his credit that on an open forum he regulates so lightly. I would say that comparisons of this site with FF are not only wrong they are an insult to not only Paul67 himself but everyone else who manages to contribute here without descending to the gutter like that bunch of Neanderthals.

It should also be remembered that Paul67 has a business to run. How he manages to post leaders so regularly amazes me. Daily articles are all well and good but feeding the family comes first.

We’re not yet at the point where we can afford to pay anyone but guaranteed starters 23k a week just to make the manager happy

We could handle a year of champions league failure but two with a big wage bill would put us in soapy bubble. And with 4 qualifiers, and god knows what else round the corner it’s a big risk.

A big wage bill is what gets you in bother normally

Unfortunately he also tolerates ad hominem attacks and torrents of personal abuse.

  24. Total speculation on my part.

My view from 289 miles away is that AV offered £15K pw after tax.

We offered similar but that included appearance money and some bonuses.

That generated the question to BR about being guaranteed a starting place in the team.

He could not be given that guarantee so our deal was worth less than theirs.

Perhaps, this is where you and I differ.

I dont see the opposite of spinning negative stories about Celtic as spinning positive ones about Celtic, or spinning negative ones about the zombies…..

. I dont care so much if the stories are negative or positive … I am more concerned at the first instance in whether or not they are true and accurate …

I always understood CQN’s tagline (not lazy journalsm) to mean that CQN wss to be searching for the truth.

It was the failure of the media to ask pretinent questions that the facts should have lead them to ask that most of us object to ….and, I believed, lead P67 to start CQN.

but If we want transparency and honesty from others, we have to be prepared to give them ourselves…

which means that we have to apply the same standards to Celtic that we wanted applied to the SFA…. and the same standards that we apply to the media to CQN, would we not?

So, if we expect to know how/why things were not done by league, then should we not expect the same sorts of inquiries to be made of Celtic (in light of its silence since 2012)?

and, if the media’s failure to question Rangers on what they did, how can we justify CQN not questioning our Boards’ slience/possilbe complicity for the last six years?

and, honestly, in my view, CQN’s credibility took a hit for doing exactly what it was set up to counter .. not asking the tough but obvious questions because we didn’t like what the answers might be.

all I have ever expected is that we, at least, live up to the standards that we demand of others ….

if some on here think that makes me a bad fan, or a bad guest, or a bad persson …. I’m okay with that …. that.

  27. D17- Celtic40- thanks for replies, my info is Sinclair is highest paid at CP, Brown and Gordon not far behind , over 30k a week , if we don’t try and compete , we will stand still.Money as we all know , is ruining the game, but McGinn was within our reach, and more importantly Brendan wanted him.If he was getting 40k a week down south, then good luck son, but he should have been in a couple of months ago IMO HH
