Inter will know they’ve been in a game

865

Someone asked me a few weeks ago if this was a must-win game.  Clearly it’s not, the cup games are must-win, as is the coming league game against Aberdeen, but tomorrow night is an important weathervane, indicating if the club is on the road to recovery.

Since that great high against Barcelona, we have faced Italian opposition twice, both in 2013, losing home games 0-3 to Juventus and Milan.  You can trace the decline in European performances through a subsequent Champions League group stage which concluded with five defeats, and last summer’s abject qualification campaign.

Indications are we are a better team now than we were in August, or even when qualifying from our Europa League group, but there is still an almighty task ahead tomorrow night.  I suspect none of this recent history will affect Ronny and his players.  The manager has told the players they can win.  Most of them are playing like they have a point to prove, all of them are looking forward to the challenge.

Inter will know they’ve been in a game.

Knew it was something not at your fighting fit, swashbuckling best.

We need to measure tomorrow against Legia and Salzburg, (remember the high pressing game) A lot of fans hold your fears, and the media here are praying for Inter to bring Celtic

down, as there’s nothing here that will.

To still be in the tie after tomorrow would be an improvement.

Would I be wrong in thinking that had there been Celtic fans on that train in Paris the guy would have been hauled aboard ,a scarf put round his neck and by the time he disembarked he would have known all the words to ” Wills Maley?

Exactly bud. Saw that happen in Amsterdam to a Jamaican busker. We weighed him a few euro and gave him a Celtic top.

I agree but Gordon having an outstanding game is the key to still being in the tie. We have nothing new to bring to the table that might affect the game apart from Armstrong.

Anything up our sleeve there ?

Mancini will have done his homework. Johansen will be snuffed out. Britton will get fun oot as they say. Broonie on points threshold with bookings

If we do not have any tactical variation for tomorrow night. If we cannot bring any surprises to the table then I fear a tough night and a long spring.

    Chelsea fans.

Used to believe they were huns. Not now. A number of their supporters have an affection for Celtic.

    Newcastle fans.

Went to a worthless testimonial. A number of their fans expressed disdainfor Celtic due to us apparently all being IRA supporters. Cretins.

  11. The old rangers fans added english national front chants to their sectarian song-sheet. Rule brittania , dambusters etc . So ibrox became a cool place to visit for NF -rascist english thugs. I had the misfortune to be on a train full of a mixture of Birmingham and Villa nutters on the way to watch the huns. They spent most of the journey singing rascist dittys “anint no black in the union jack” as well as slagging off each other teams.

  14. I’ve posted in the past that my brother in law, who has friends with loyalist leanings, that’s puting it mildly, stayed in the kings road for years and supported Fulham, because Chelsea fans were full of left wing leaning Republican sympathisers.

And remember you can choose your friends but not your family.

Awe_ Naw. Inter Milan will only have eleven players on the park the same as Celtic and if we press them all over the park and dont allow them to play football we can give them a run for there money.I think what most Celtic fans are looking to see if we have improved from the Maribor game and if over the two games we keep it close I think most of us will be happy.H.H.

Your European eye demands high standards.

Up until the January window some were banking on James Forrest!

to unlock Inter, the game is too soon for Stuart Armstrong and maybe slightly less so, for GMS.

Sadly if we’re banking on tactical variation then your scenario could be played out, because RD doesn’t change it much and the high pressing game has gone badly wrong, the higher the level of side we’ve faced.

But he thinks we’re a better side, and he’s the man.

  18. We’ve beaten no-one yet.

Domestically, we’ve come onto a game, and a winning run. But the only quality team we’ve met in recent months – Salzburg – took us to the cleaners. They could have scored at will at CP, relenting at 3-0 only because they didn’t need any more.

Ronny’s much-vaunted ‘run around a lot’ system feel on its naive arse that night. If he tries it tomorrow night, Inter will take a look, have a laugh, and pick us off at their leisure.

Some have said this current Inter side are pish. There is a BIG difference between Serie A Inter pish and Govan Zombies pish. Like £8 million talent warming Inter benches.

If we are to get a result tomorrow, Ronny will have to add caution to his enthusiasm and ensure we exhibit the positional discipline to keep us in the tie more than 20 minutes.

Tomorrow could be the making of this Celtic squad, or the stark exposure of our ineptitude.

I hope RD’s getting things right and proving me and others wrong. We’ll see.

By the way, reactionist cheerleaders, this does not make me a ‘Deila hater’, merely a skeptic and realist looking for measured improvement against a proper team, not hapless Hun Monkeys.

    JFH,

I agree its about attempting not to destroy our European reputation at home. A return to fortress Celtic park. I am more concerned about our formation when we have the ball which will not be anywhere like possession stats against SPFL dross. Inter will dominate this game from start to finish. If they don’t then that will be an improvement. I fully expect an have we improved under Ronny debate tomorrow.

I would give Chas Mulgrew a Scotland top tomorrow and play with just one up from which has to be Leigh .. and he has poor games at this level as the lone striker

I wouldn’t be surprised if he unleashed wee Jamesie ( if he has as some suspect been wrapped in cotton wool for this game ). Lustig is defo out through injury, as is Chaz.

I agree regarding Mulgrew but it’ll be after VVD’s departure next summer before we see the better of Charlie again at CB IMHO.

Awe_Naw. Mulgrew is injured so wont play tomorrow and as far as I know Lustig will not play either the only one with half a chance is Jamsie.I think the team selection will be interesting Rony may just surprise us. I am looking to see how our two centre backs play as im sure they will be put under much more pressure than they are used to. H.H.
